Shadows that shouldn’t exist threaten everything Maya holds dear. When danger comes knocking and Maya must take action, the mysterious man she met at a bar may hold the key. Will the secrets buried in her past come back to haunt her? Victoria Flynn is a wife, mom, author, book enthusiast, scientist, and believer in cosmic balance and magic. She loves traveling and is an unapologetic foodie. When she's not writing, she can be found with her nose buried in a good book or outside enjoying the unpredictable Michigan weather.
Poor Maya. The girl woke up one day in a situation she couldn't fathom. It's interesting to find out where Mya's bloodline will lead here. A lot of action, romance and intrigue.
I was given A Soul's Sacrifice for an honest review and can say that it was a really good read. Maya is a young woman whose parents died a couple of years ago and only has her best friend Angie and her cat left as the most important people in her life. Maya is completely adamant that there is absolutely nothing paranormal in the world and sticks by her belief. So when she starts seeing shadow spirits and is attacked by them, then her best friend Angie is taken, it's all quite a shock! Along comes Rhys to whisk her away to safety (in a swamp, I might add) and hopefully give Maya some answers about why she was targeted by the shadow spirits. The story continues with Maya finding out who she truly is and starts her Voodoo training at the swamp with Mama, who raised Rhys, in preparation to rescue her best friend Angie. There is, however, ulterior motives going on with the Voodoo Gods (Loas) and I will definitely be reading the next book in the series to find out what the Baron wants with Maya.
What an amazing story. I loved every minute of it.
The characters were incredible. Each character had so many dark secrets that were hidden until just the right moment when the author was ready to reveal them. Maya was such a strong willed character. I absolutely loved her courage to take on anything that was thrown at her. I loved reading about this character. Rhys was such a sexy and protective character which made me fall for him just as Maya did. And mama was, well just......cryptic yet a lot of fun to read.
The story-line was phenomenal. There was a lot of mystery and magic with this story that kept me craving to read more. This author had so many secrets stored within this story's pages and would only give us the outcomes when she was ready which is why I needed to continue to read the story. Once everything came together everything made sense too. I was completely enchanted by this powerful story and I highly recommend it.
A Souls Sacrifice by Victoria Flynn 4 stars Reviewed on behalf of Queens of the Darkside I really enjoyed this book! It isn’t my usual genre but something about the blurb had me intrigued and I was really glad I decided to give this book a try. The storyline was really unique and I liked the characters! It took me a while to make my mind up about what was going to happen in this story and even then I was wrong! I loved that it wasn’t predictable. I actually thought I was going to like Drake – how wrong was I?!?!? Maya find herself thrust into a world she didn’t even know existed when her best friend is taken by a shadow. She doesn’t know that the mysterious man she met at a bar is the only key to helping her find her best friend. As the story progresses we see Maya learn about her past and where she actually comes from. I really liked Maya. She had a great feisty character to her even if it could prove troublesome for her! I thought that Maya and Rhys together were great! They had this fabulous raw connection. I was actually a little heartbroken at the end of the book! I can’t wait to see what happens next for Maya and just what Baron wants with her!
This story grabbed me from the very beginning. It was full of textures and excitement, and the action seemed never ending. We begin with Maya who gets drawn into the heart of New Orleans' Voodoo culture in ways she never expected or wanted. Enter Rys, the young who doesn't really want to be a part of Maya's drama, but if she's going to find her missing best friend, Angie, they are going to have to work together. Watching their relationship develop into something neither of them expected as they fight forces bent on not only keeping them apart but preventing Mya from becoming the powerful woman she was meant to be.
The characters are colorful and full of life. They made me laugh and struck me with fear. As the debut book by this author, I was more than impressed. It was an intricate story with a lot of New Orleans history in its culture and its religious practices. I loved how much larger than life her loa were and especially liked Baron Samedi. He might be wicked and sends a chill through me, but something about him makes me smile. This author as obviously done her research.
This is the first book in the Voodoo Revival Series and introduces the reader into the world of Voodoo in New Orleans. Maya Thibodeau is except for her cat Moonbeam and her best friend Angie, pretty much alone in the world. Sometimes she has strange dreams, but otherwise she would say she’s basically pretty normal, almost boring. That is about to change in a big way as she starts to see odd things one night. Next thing she knows, her bet friend has been kidnapped and she’s travelling with Rhys, a total stranger, to a house in the middle of the swamp. The Louisiana Swamp isn’t the only thing steamy in this book and there is a lot more than meets the eye. It took me a while to get into this book, and I will admit I was confused at the beginning. But that basically fits what Maya is feeling as well, as a world she knows nothing about is sprung on her. Once I got the gist of who is who and what was going on, I sped through the rest of the book, wanting to see what happens to Maya and Rhys. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book!

I'm sorry. I just couldn't finish it. I got to about 30%. Maya was just too immature for me. She kept getting angry and accusatory over every little thing even when it was right in front of her face. Along with multiple panic attacks. All in a very short period of time. I get it the first couple of times. But there seemed to be no end. And I really wanted to read this because this type of magic story is new to me and I wanted to see where it would go. But the extreme immaturity and rages Maya was having just wouldn't let me get into the story. Not to mention it just seemed to drag because of all that. I'm sorry but I wish it had been better.
A Souls Sacrifice is a fantastic read! Written by Victoria Flynn, this story takes a young woman trying to find her way in the world and flips it upside down. Maya wants to care about others yet she seems to be burned constantly.
After strange shadows start to terrorize her, and her very best friend becomes embroiled in danger, she is forced to recognize that she may have some hidden talents. Trust has to develop with a love interest so she can learn to help herself and those that she cares about.
This was a great story with twists and turns that leaves you wanting more. The book is cantered around Maya while she tries to figure out who she is and what she can do all while trying to save not just her best friend but the whole of New Orleans from a crazy mad man. I can't wait for the next instalment to see where the story goes from here. This review was written on behalf of Amo and Sarah's book corner.
I have not read many one books that center around voodoo and the black/white magic that centers around it. I loved this story it was original and educational as I learned some things. This story packs some serious punches with its never ending twists and turns that you do not anticipate. Great story with some fun and interesting characters. Great read was totally worth trying something different for reading this book.
Decent read about bayou's voodoo magic. Maya is a descendant of a voodoo priest and she is training with Mama learning the history, prophecy, magic and her role to save her best friend, Angie, and the world. Her relationship with Rhys is up and down. I didn't care for her juvenile behavior when it comes to Rhys. There's good character development and in depth history/background. Overall, interesting read.
his is an amazing glimps into the voodoo of the deep south, and the loas, it is a bit of mystery and fairy tail, that will have you on the edge of your seat wondering what will happen next and how things will work for all involved be it Rhys, Maya, Angela or Arlen... the world that the author builds is so in depth and so spell binding that you dont want to pull yourself away even once the book ends. I received an arc of this story that i happily reviewed
This book is a good read. A bit confusing at some points, still good. There are is a section that made me cringe & I hope it wasn't intentional. But the parts where the main character did bathe herself for days after fighting in mud & after private time with Rhys. She just put her visibly dirty clothes back on & got in the bed & woke the next morning to just change clothes 🤢
Maya is a 24 year old orphan content with her life, when one night out with her girlfriend changes everything. Suddenly she meets Rhys and is introduced to the real sinister world she never knew existed and a crash course in discovery of herself. An intriguing read that sets you up for the next chapter of Maya's new life.
SPOILER ALERT!!!!!@ Book was good but had several problems with it. I get Maya grew up in New Orleans and Voodoo and supernatural go hand in hand, but come on. After a short time on the mash with Mama and Rhys Maya all of a sudden is able to harness her magic in no time. I get that her ancestors help and aide her but come on.
Amazing paranormal book. A little slow in the beginning but what an outstanding ending. Love the fierce heroine. Love all the characters. This book is filled with surprises around every corner. Can't wait to read the next book in the series.
The author created a story rich in detail that pulls the reader into the world of voodoo. The main characters were compelling. An entertaining paranormal read, I enjoyed it and look forward to the next installment.
The story line just didn’t engage me and I had trouble maintaining interest in the story. This book might be great for someone with different story tastes.
"A soul's sacrifice" is the debut novel of author Victoria Flynn, and I must say, I'm impressed. I'm usually a fan of paranormal/urban fantasy, in fact in this book the recipe is the same. We have our heroine, Maya Thibodeau, who is just a normal woman who has just started her internship. After some weird appearances and a homicide attempt, she meets somebody that helps her escape from the monsters that are trying to kill her. Maya will understand that there is more behind her birth than she knew, and lives are at stake.
Like I said, the plot is the same as many urban fantasy novels, but I have never read about vodoo. We haven't been explained well why Maya has to do what she has to do or other stuff regarding the main male character, Rhys. It isn't unusual that the story is set in New Orleans and close places, that city has the great potential with all of the stories it bears about magic and whatnot.
About the characters, I'm still unsure about Maya. Sometimes she rambles too much and looks weak, a bit unsure of herself and always doubting everything. While it wouldn't be good for her to say 'yes' all the time, sometimes I would have loved more character from her. Rhys is another interrogation mark as well. He has got the potential to become one great male character, but he is very mysterious and we don't know much about him. I guess the characters will evolve and show more of their personality in the next books. One interesting character was mama Yansa. She made me think of one of those witches in Disney movies with a halo of mystery around her; a character who knows but doesn't want to tell. A character that didn't convince me much, was Angie. We see bits of her friendship with Maya and how she has to save her, but somehow, I didn't feel the spark between the girls. Like I said earlier, Maya looks unsure and as if she isn't really convinced she wants to save her friend. We'll see what happens next.
I am intrigued to read the next installment of this series!
At the close of each year i reflect back over what I have read and who or what stood out for me. This year my breakout author will be Victoria Flynn with A Soul's Sacrifice. As debut books go, Flynn nailed it. I was intrigued from the very beginning. She had a strong opening hook.
I find voodoo and New Orleans very fascinating. A Soul's Sacrifice by Victoria Flynn brings both together in this fast paced, paranormal romance.
The characters. OMG everyone has secrets and no one should be taken at face value. The romance. Flynn turns a hot Louisiana night in the bayou into sizzling, sex on a dock. Fan me now.
I am eagerly awaiting to start the next book in this series!
