The Reardon Files #1

Sentinel Rising Book 1

Rate this book
Two Families. One Secret. Powers worth hiding. Lauren Whitehouse, mother and police wife, has disappeared without a trace, and her sister insists that Lauren's husband had a hand in it. Detective turned private investigator Connor Reardon wants only one thing: a middle class existence where his Sentinel abilities remain secret. An unspeakable act of violence draws Reardon once again into a world of old-fashioned detective work and supernatural danger, a world he thought he had left behind forever. Reardon is persuaded to use his unique skills to find the missing woman. As he investigates, he discovers there are terrible secrets connected to her, and dangerous men behind her. To solve the mystery, he and his fiance, Gypsy Shields, must undertake a journey that requires him to navigate a web of lies, betrayal, and treachery, and come face to face with the darkness within himself. If you like a good whodunnit with a paranormal slant like the shows "Medium" and "Ghost Whisperer," you'll love Sentinel Rising.

I guess you could describe this as a standard PI story set in the suburbs of Melbourne in Aus. Except the PI Connor is a Sentinel. Now I had no idea what a Sentinel was until i read this book, but apparently a Sentinel sees dead folk. Which is handy when you're investigating a murder. It cuts out all that bothersome stuff like looking for clues and doing the graft.
So a girl is murdered and the obvious suspect is the husband who's recently remortgaged the house and there's some weird stuff going on with cross dressing and black mail is suspected. But all of that is red herrings. Sorry if that wrecks the tale, but everyone excepts there's going to be red herrings getting in the way, eh?
I've got to be honest the supernatural stuff didn't do it for me, but if you like that sort of stuff give it a try. I like my PI's straight, investigative, smoking and drinking rye from the bottle. But that's just me.

Unusual interesting twist on crime detection.

I enjoyed this book. Such a different take on crime solving.
I believe the dead can "speak" to us from the grave.

I began with her very first book and have continued, as this series has developed, and as they were written....... Steady excitement, twists, turns, characters you care about, and you'll NEVER see the end coming.
I'm not one to write on and on (and on) and spoil a story line, so I HIGHLY recommend you buy this book.
Sentinel Rising is stand alone, no annoying cliffhanger, but do yourself a favor, start at the beginning of the series, and buy them all!

I find it difficult to recommend 5 stars - although the story deserves it. .

The book seems to have been published without being edited. There are many inconsistencies and errors - simple things like calling someone a sister, then referring to the same person as a sister-in-law, or from a brother-in-law to a son-in-law. These should have been picked up at the editing/proofreading stage.

There are also repetitions in the general text that should have been corrected before going to the publisher. It feels like the author wanted to get the book out quickly and cut vital corners before going to print.

I have read all the stories in this series so far and have noticed a decline in quality with each book. What started as an occasional error in the text/plot in the first book has grown with every instalment in the series. This book is so badly edited that I couldn’t let it go and felt I had to write a review - maybe the author will take the time to fix it for future readers

It’s a shame - the plots are good but the final offering needs to be worthy of the time taken to read it.

I was

I was expecting a bit of magic. Detectives are hard pressed but when u introduce magic there should be at least some . Not what I was led to believe by reading the intro to buy it. It had a few suggested side lines but they petered out. Went off in a few possible tangents without following up. Good base story but he (Reardon) needs a focus. Magic or cop or both but a bit more substance.

So I filed this under crime and not under paranormal or anything sci fi because this is mainly a crime novel. An ex police officer is called in as a PI to solve the murder of a woman's sister. The only facet that made this slightly paranormal is the fact that the PI is what Ms. Drew chooses to call a 'sentinel'. Basically, the dead speak to him in flashes of insight, pictures that must then be interpreted.

Good, Gypsy series continues

Though the story continued the story of Gypsy and Connor, the kindle version had several distracting typos and errors that leave the reader relying on intuition to conclude conversations and events.
