How do you make sense of a world in which right is wrong, evil is virtuous, and those you were taught were monsters are the ones truly worthy of saving? Jennifer's life was chaotic enough without having to leave home for college. Still reeling from her mother's untimely death, Jen resists the overwhelming urge to cling to life as she remembers and continues to press onward as she knows her mother would want. But as she hugs her dad goodbye, she has no idea that she will soon be thrust into a world she once thought existed only deep within her childhood imagination. When an ill-timed Samaritan mission goes awry, Jen finds herself stumbling through an unfamiliar land of quaint, friendly dwarves, a monstrous wolf, and blood-thirsty deceit. Is everything here as black and white as it seems, or must she simply look deeper to find the hidden shades of red?
What a fun fast-paced read! I love fairytale retellings and the author made this book even more engaging by throwing in her own twists on classic lore. The characters were all so fun and I loved being part of Red’s world.
The author’s strength is definitely in crafting strong, smart, witty female leads. I adored Jen. I found her so relatable and I loved her every girl quality. I could imagine myself reacting the same way if I found myself in a strange, enchanted forest. The secondary characters were all great too (who doesn’t love Snow White’s dwarves?).
The pace is super quick and that would probably be my only complaint. I was enjoying the world so much I wanted a lot more. The swiftness also didn’t leave for a ton of development as far as the romance. This is a more of a personal preference since I’m a fan of slow building love stories.
Great book for YA paranormal fans! I always like books with crossover appeal and Red definitely will appeal to adult fans as well.
The book starts out slow and cliched, but when it finally starts moving towards its own original ideas, it definitely leaps! There have been similar takes on the Big, Bad Wolf, but prepare for an entirely new (and intriguing!) twist on the Dwarves.
This author is actually from my hometown area, and I definitely look forward to reading more of her works!
I felt like I had A LOT to say when I first finished this book, but words are evading at the moment. I will admit I almost gave up on this read a few times -- for a teacher, she definitely could have used help editing! -- but I am VERY glad I did not! I also have to wonder if the author is perhaps a fan of The 10th Kingdom and Labyrinth for there were definitely moments within that reminded me of both of these wonderful films!
But don't give up! No matter how cliched, no matter how many punctuation and spelling errors you may notice, keep reading! It is definitely worth the journey!!
I also feel like this book resonates with the victim in me. I was abused for most of my childhood and well into my 30s. The way the villain in this novel is written both chills me and churns my gut. There are also a great many traits and word choices that I recognize in my own abuser, and I have to wonder if perhaps the author herself was abused. I would definitely recommend this book not just to fantasy fans, but to victims who are still struggling to escape the mentality of falling for their abusers' deceits!
A total impulse buy, because I'm a sucker for fairy tales. This book is a quick read and very fast-paced. The characters fall flat for me and the plot is mediocre, but given the length I suppose that is understandable. The romance pretty much is insta-love as well.
Nonetheless, there are elements in the novel that if given a larger scale, I would have enjoyed more.
A quick read that I couldn't put down! I loved this fairytale retelling involving Red Riding Hood and a few of our other fairytale faves. The modern mixing with the folktale, the mishmash of familiar characters we can look at in new ways. This is a fun story that shines new light on the fable with creative language and an imaginative twist!
This was a cute story. I love the retelling of fairy tales and this one was a good one. I'm still a little confused about some stuff, I'm hoping it will be revealed in the next book?
Either way I loved Jen, even though I wanted to smack her a few times! Lol..I love the twist to the fairytale, definitely worth a read.
A twist on a classic we all know and love. This is a unique take on several classic fairytales. Jen is smart and has a quick wit. She's a likable female lead. The story is strong and I definitely recommend this to anyone who is in love with fairy tales, once upon a time and happily ever afters.
Quick thoughts: Interesting twisting and combining of common fairy tales, but better in idea than execution. Drags a bit in the middle despite its short length. Final conflict was clever but would have had more impact with proper foreshadowing. A good read that could've been better.
