Miss Ditty Oliver is a proposal planner. "Romance should be planned and executed to perfection." She's been very successful. Her next client is Charles Parsley, a lawyer in Brexley. Her biggest critic is his brother, Harry. A doctor and a new duke, with no money, he only has bills and in desperate need of help. The last thing he needs is to worry about his brother's proposal planner. At first he is sceptical about his brother hiring a proposal planner. Ditty knows her business and sets out to prove him wrong. It's doctor verses proposal planner. Descriptive sex.

I started this one just before news broke that harlequin/mills and Boon weren’t continuing with their historical line which.. sucks and it sucks even more because I really enjoyed this one.

This is basically if a small town romance had a baby with a historical romance. And it works! I am a huge cringer, it honestly doesn’t take a lot for me to cringe but this was cute and it wasn’t over kill.

Ditty is a “proposal planner” and after a little bit of scandal and her engagement going downhill she decides to take a job farrr away from London. She’s to meet with Charles who is planning to propose but Charles can’t meet her off the stagecoach so he sends his brother Henry who’s is a doctor AND a duke instead. There’s a little animosity at first, which slowly turns to friendship and then of course ROMANCE!

There’s romance in this was great, realistic and just so cute. Everything I needed right now. It’s slowburn which is my favourite and we really get to see these two fall in love. Their love for each other, their love for the town and the love for the residence was just super heartwarming.

Alsooo the dialogue was brilliant and the side characters were exceptionally fleshed out. Great pacing and fabulous writing!

Will definitely be reading more from this author in the future

This is small-town romance, Regency-style, with just enough meddling to keep things humming. Ditty Oliver—professional proposal planner, financial backbone of her family, and aggressively competent—treats love like a business transaction, mostly because she’s learned the hard way that feelings equal pain. Henry Paisley, newly minted duke with an impoverished estate and a bruised ego, is grumpy, stressed, and deeply allergic to asking for help. Naturally, sparks fly.

The Brexley setting is charming, the banter does real work, and the meddling aunties are doing the absolute most. Both leads are likable, if occasionally exhausting in their commitment to self-sabotage. A few anachronistic bits nudged me out of 1811, but the emotional arcs land. These two just need to say the words—and when they finally do, it’s very satisfying.

After the death of her father, the Oliver sisters, Aphrodite “Ditty”, Thalia and Calliope, moved to London with their heartbroken mother. Ditty soon realized that they were left penniless and that their mother was too caught up in her grief to form any sort of plan, so Ditty did what she does best – plan! She started a business designing and planning the perfect marriage proposal, despite not being a fan of love matches or romantic love in general. Business is good and she has an exceptional success rate, but when she refuses a commission, the spurned client makes a lot of noise and she accepts a job outside of London to let things calm down.

She travels to the small village of Brexley, which apparently is “The Home of Romance” to meet her new client Mr. Charles Paisley. But it isn’t Charles who picks her up from the Coaching house – it is his older brother Henry, the town doctor and newly minted Duke of Glanyrafon. After a bit of miscommunication and more than a little rudeness on Henry’s part, Ditty is relieved to realize that he is not her client. She tries to ignore her attraction to him and gets to work planning the perfect proposal for Charles and his (hopefully) soon to be fiancée. As she settles into town, Henry tries to make amends for his terrible behavior when they first met and slowly the two form a friendship. Henry inherited the title only to learn that it was penniless, but he had already opened a retirement home for the elderly residents of Brexley. He has been quietly struggling to keep the home afloat until Ditty offers to help him. Henry has been burned by love, and it has made him a bit jaded, but with Ditty he realizes that he gave his heart to the wrong woman. He would love to woo Ditty, but he has nothing to offer her other than his heart.

After reading the blurb, I was very excited to jump right into this book as it sounded amazing. I started reading and almost immediately realized that the title of the book is deceiving – Ditty is not a matchmaker, she plans proposals – which seems a bit unbelievable, especially for the Regency era. The further I got into the story, the more disillusioned I became – the story is fine, but the idea of three sisters with mythological names making their own way seemed very familiar and as I read it became clear that this book is a contemporary in period dress – there is nothing even remotely historical about this book other than the characters wear period clothing, ride in carriages and have no electricity, they do not observe the properties of the era, or even basic etiquette. Overall, I guess I am just too picky, if you don’t get hung up on historical etiquette, primogeniture, or correct formal address, you will probably enjoy this story. For me, it was a miss, I didn’t hate it and I liked the author’s writing style, but I wouldn’t read it again and I don’t think I will be reading any future installments of this series.

2.5 stars, rounded up

The Duke’s Meddlesome Matchmaker begins The Unconventional Oliver Sisters series with a delicious grumpy/sunshine couple who will keep you on your toes as they battle out their completely opposite thoughts on love and happily ever afters… while falling, completely unexpectedly, for each other. Aphrodite (Ditty) absolutely believes that any romantic encounter should be planned down to the most minute detail. She doesn’t believe in the fairy tale of true love; that myth intended for children was shattered from her thoughts long ago.

Now she’s set her matchmaking cap at yet another successful engagement… or she would if the intended client’s brother would stop interfering! The dashing duke takes exception to Ditty’s belief that love is nothing more than a tale to tempt a person into giving control of their own lives away. Henry firmly believes that love is a natural state, and should be encouraged to flourish at its own pace, not engineered in the slightest. Two stubborn people are about to engage in battle, only… neither expected to find their own one true love in the fight to prove themselves right.

I enjoyed The Duke’s Meddlesome Matchmaker. While Ditty is not actually a matchmaker, but a proposal planner, the romantic outcomes on the line are similar. Her ongoing witty and frustrating discussions with Henry over the reality of this thing that fairytales call love were amusing. Each was trying to convince the other that their viewpoint needed to change, when in fact it was hearts that needed to open up to the possibilities right in front of them. While there were some details about the time period I could nitpick, overall I enjoyed my reading experience with this couple.

If you enjoy a stubborn, grumpy-sunshine Historical Romance, then you’d have fun with this story.

*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley, and I sincerely thank the author or publishing house for their trust. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*

The Duke's Meddlesome Matchmaker
by Emily E.K. Murdoch

Aphrodite "Ditty" Oliver, a skilled proposal planner with a flair for creating perfect romantic moments, firmly believes that love can be orchestrated with precision. This belief drives her successful career in matchmaking. However, her latest project takes an unexpected turn when she clashes with her client’s charming yet infuriating brother, the dashing Duke Henry Paisley. Henry is a man of principle who feels that interfering in matters of the heart undermines the authenticity of true connection.

Contrasting sharply with Ditty's pragmatic approach, Henry embraces a more organic view of love, convinced that genuine relationships should evolve naturally, without the intervention of a planner. Meanwhile, Ditty, having grown up with the notion that true love is a mere fairy tale, is determined to demonstrate that love can indeed be cultivated through careful planning and effort.

This novel is an absolute delight; I found it to be an enjoyable and engaging read. The initial tension between Ditty and Henry creates a dynamic that makes their witty banter even more captivating. Ditty exhibits a strong will, remarkable competency, and exceptional organisational skills, yet she grapples with her own fears and insecurities. In contrast, Henry is charmingly disorganised, often relying on his good intentions and a generous heart to navigate life.

As their opposing philosophies collide, sparks fly, illuminating their differing perspectives on love and relationships. The story is not only charming and lighthearted but also easy to read, keeping the reader engaged from start to finish.

Since this is the first book in a promising series, I eagerly anticipate the delightful surprises and further developments that will emerge in the upcoming instalments.

Try this one if you like historicals with a slight romantic comedy flair, a slow burn, and a sprinkling of Valentine’s Day. There’s a little sense of community, too, with Henry, who is a doctor as well as a duke, financially struggling to keep an elder care facility afloat.

It’s always enjoyable to encounter something new to me in a story, in this instance, Ditty’s career as a proposal planner. I also liked that Ditty isn’t the starry-eyed romantic you might envision for such a job, she’s purposely cerebral and pragmatic (to some of her clients’ dismay), the hurt from her father’s death has made her reticent to invite any more love (and therefore eventual heartbreak) into her life.

Henry is a romantic, however, his last relationship ended badly, so he’s reluctant to let his attraction to Ditty bloom. Henry has some awkward and nervous moments in Ditty’s company, he isn’t always the most alpha confident of guys, which I found refreshing and endearing.

The chemistry between Henry and Ditty is evident without going overboard, the glances, the touches, the times where they can’t help beaming at each other, and even when things escalate physically, there’s a wonderfully light hand to the writing style, so their interactions and the development of their relationship feels natural rather than forced.

Henry and Ditty engage in debates with one another as well as cordial conversations fairly often, so there’s plenty of getting to know each other, you feel like it’s more than a surface connection which always helps when it comes to buying into the happily ever after.

A couple minor things felt a bit convenient, but other than that this was the best time I’ve had with a romance novel in a while.

I had so many mixed feelings about this book. I liked the main characters. They were strong and well developed, but they were also somewhat contradictory. They seemed strong one moment and then insecure the next. There was so much time spent in the dialogue of them wasting time denying their feelings and being scared to express themselves. It grew tedious. It made the book seem longer than it needed to be. There were so many antagonistic scenes at the beginning of their journey. While they did add to their angst, it felt overdone. They could have been happy and together sooner and the book still would have been fulfilling with all of the other moments and characters from the small town. That is where the book introduces you to the funny, quirky townspeople. There was humor, support, and love from all of them. Once they did give in to their feelings, there were still both afraid to admit their feelings, almost to the detriment of their happy ending. Luckily with help and advice from others, they finally got it together to get their HEA. I enjoyed the author’s writing style, but it did seem like she liked to pack a lot of things in one book/plot. The journey just proved to be frustrating and too long at times so I could only give 3.5 ⭐️s.

I had a lot of fun with this book. It’s charming, lighthearted, and very easy to sink into once you get going. Ditty is a really interesting FMC, super practical, very much in control, and carrying a lot on her shoulders, which made her feel refreshing even when she was being a little stubborn. Henry was such a good match for her too, grumpy, wounded, quietly kind, and absolutely not prepared for the chaos Ditty brings into his life.

The banter was one of my favorite parts. Their back and forth felt natural, playful, and occasionally sharp in a way that worked really well for a grumpy sunshine dynamic. I also loved the small town setting and the side characters, they added warmth and made the story feel cozy and lived in.

Tropes you’ll definitely recognize and probably enjoy
• Grumpy sunshine
• Enemies to lovers
• Small town romance
• Slow burn
• High society Regency vibes

This isn’t a super intense or angsty read, but it’s consistently entertaining and comforting, the kind of book you pick up when you want something romantic and feel good without emotional devastation. It sets up the series nicely and made me curious about the rest of the Oliver sisters.

Solid 4 stars for me. It was sweet, fun, and exactly what I wanted in a Regency romance moment.

Ditty is on mission to save her family from destitution. Henry is a doctor who just inherited a broken dukedom. I have to say, Ditty was a bit hard to digest in the first part of the book, being so controlling and cold. Even her ‘boyfriend’ relationship was timed to the minute. I found myself rather uncomfortable with her attitude. Henry’s pride got in the way of his asking for help, which just made his situation worse. Their first meeting is hilarious and the banter was wonderfully funny. The patients in Henry’s home were so adorable and I can see Mavis and Anvil being so mischievous. I enjoyed how the author compared life in the big city to the small town feel in such a backhanded way. Seeing them both change for the better was entertaining as they learned from each other. Communication is the key in any relationship, yet fear is what kept them apart. I loved this story, especially the ending and epilogue. Lovely characters that I would have loved to have met in real life in a small town I would loved to have lived in where “everybody knows your name”! Truly delicious!

✨Gifted ARC✨

This was such a cute, feel-good, happy book!

THOUGHTS 💭
🌹 Our FMC Aphrodite, Ditty, is carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders; her family’s livelihood depends on her proposal planning business being a success.
🩺 Our MMC Henry is a doctor-turned-Duke who finds himself with a defunct and penniless estate. Henry has been burned before by love and is a bit of a grump about Ditty’s arrival.
🌹 I loved that both of our characters were against love and VERY practical, but that they couldn’t find it in themselves to stay away from each other.
🩺 Small town romances are a fave - we got to know/fall in love with the village of Brexley alongside Ditty. It felt like the village was bringing our MCs together.
🌹 The push and pull of an enemies to lovers story gets me every time!
🩺 Though they had a rough start of it, I loved that Ditty and Henry complimented each other so well.

Thanks so much to Emily E K Murdoch, Harlequin Historical, and NetGalley for the ARC of this book!

I’ve read several historical romances written by Emily E K Murdoch and loved every single one. This book is no exception.
It’s about Aphrodite (Ditty), proposal planner, who financially supports her sisters, and also her mother, after her father’s death. She’s now in a lovely village for a new client. He turns out to be the brother of Henry, the grump she meets at arriving. Henry believes it’s a waste of money, for several reasons.
Meanwhile he is struggling to make ends meet, because he inherited nothing but debts.
But along the way, they catch feelings for one another. And one thing leads to another.

~~Henry swallowed. How did she do that? Say things that went right to the heart?~~

~~Why was it she felt so—so alive whenever she was with this man?~~

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. All characters and their surroundings were vividly described, and I could picture myself being there. A recommended read.

Thanks to Harlequin Romance for an arc of this book, which I received through NetGalley.

I really enjoyed this book! Ditty and Henry’s characters were well-developed and I could relate to both of them. Ditty was a planner (like me) and liked things in order. Henry, as a spontaneous romantic, was a nice complement to her personality. Their relationship progressed slowly but believably over the course of the book. I also loved that this story took place in a small town, with a group of lovable support characters that were really rooting for Ditty and Henry to get together!

Some of the story didn’t seem to align with Regency-era England (e.g. quick travel time between towns, Ditty was allowed to work and travel about without a chaperone, etc) but overall, it was an engaging story with smooth dialog and an interesting plot.

In summary, this was a great book and I’m looking forward to any other books that may come about from these characters! Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this free advanced copy - this is my honest and voluntary review.

Henry believes meddling in matters of the heart is counter to a true connection.
The first book in a new series & it was different, I did have to suspend belief as the more I read the more I felt this was not a Regency romance but a contemporary with characters wearing Regency clothes & travelling in carriages so I decide to treat it as a Regency set in a parallel universe! I liked the characters but didn’t love them, I enjoyed their journey to a HEA.I did struggle to finish the book & it took me over a week as I kept dipping in in between reading other books

A Charming Start to a New Series

I received a free eARC of The Duke’s Meddlesome Matchmaker by Emily E. K. Murdoch in exchange for an honest review.

I found this book a little hard to get into at first because of the language — it took me a bit to adjust to the author’s style. I also felt the tone of the dialogue didn’t always reflect the social status of the main characters, a duke and his lawyer brother. However, once I settled into the writing, I found the story quite charming!

The real highlights for me were the colorful residents of Brexley. The village characters added warmth and humor to the story, making it an enjoyable read. The romance itself is mostly clean, with just one mildly spicy scene.

This was a sweet start to The Unconventional Oliver Sisters series, and I’m definitely curious to see which Oliver sister finds her match next!

This was a lighthearted read. I am a planner ( not quite to the extent of the FMC) so I could emphasise with her to a certain extent. The need to plan her own romance didn’t sit well with me but it was instrumental in the events of the book.
Henry was adorable. He is wary of her, caring, overwhelmed etc. A million things that people today can relate to.
The side characters in the village are relatable to anyone who live in a small community.
Historically I am not sure such a profession existed and the ability to travel from near Manchester to london and back in 2 days by stage in 1812 was not plausible but I am willing to overlook, this.

First book in The Unconventional Oliver Sisters
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the e-arc given for review. All opinions are my own.

My first 5 star romance of the year and I'm really glad it was a historical one. This was such an enjoyable and fun read. I loved how they really didn't like each other at the beginning therefore their banter was so fun to read. As the story progressed I enjoyed seeing them changing their opinion about each other as they got to know each other. The whole cast of secondary characters was a great addition too. I hope to see more of their antics in matchmaking in the rest of the series, which I really look forward to.

This was a really adorable read. Ditty was a really enjoyable lead character. She was the correct amount of saucy when standing up for her self and seeing how much she loves her family was very sweet. She is trying to save her professional reputation in this book and a silly Duke keeps getting in her way. I loved all the characters in this story. They really helped this story feel full and vibrant. Our Duke, I like him too. I didn’t find him that grumpy maybe I just saw it more as lack of confidence.

I didn’t really love the premise of her job for some reason, it seems like a good job for a woman at this time period that isn’t hard labor but something she could very easily justify her excellence in.

Overall I feel like I tend to forgive a lot with historical romance for the sake of the vibes, but ultimately this one just didn’t hold up. The story was very sweet, and I liked the characters, but nothing about this one really drew me in.

One issue I had with this one was that the choice of language made it easy to forget that this was taking place in a historical setting. I’m not sure what it was, but this one seemed to lack the atmosphere and the vibes that regency novels typically have. Most of the dialogue felt like it could have taken place today.

Otherwise there is nothing explicitly wrong with this one, but it just didn’t quite hit for me.

Thank you to NetGalley and Harlequin for this ARC. All thoughts in this review are my own.

Ditty and her sisters live in London and to make ends meet Ditty works as a proposal planner unfortunately that is not going well so she accepts an out of town job and travels to the village of Brexley to plan the proposal of Charles when she gets there she meets his brother Henry who does not have a good opinion on planning proposals believing in romance.
They manage to sort each others issues and at the same time fall in love.
This was a pleasure to read and the antics of the residents of Brexley were great fun

Since her father’s death Aphrodite (Ditty) Oliver has supported her mother and sisters by being a professional proposal planner (no I’d never heard of this either!). However jobs are drying up in London and so she takes a client in the small village of Brexley. Here she finds herself drawn to the people who live there and in particular her client’s brother. However, she hopes to protect her heart by never falling in love and Henry has had his heart broken once and doesn’t want to risk a second rejection, so the road to a HEA is a bit rocky!

A charming story for a lazy weekend read!

Henry and Ditty’s courtship was delightful to follow, and the town of Brexley, with its welcoming residents, felt straight out of a Hallmark movie, sprinkled with just the right amount of spice.

The townsfolk were a lot of fun and the older ladies made me laugh. Overall an enjoyable, if not entirely period accurate read, they left me eager to dive into the next Oliver sister’s tale. Fingers crossed for a holiday themed courtship for one of them!

If you’re looking for a cozy, low drama romance this book may be for you.

It was an enjoyable story and kept me entertained with a little bit of grumpy/sunshine, a reluctant freshly minted duke and a cast of side characters doing neighbourly things.

I was a little put off by the American English terms applied in an 1800s English setting.

An Unexpected Love!

A fun, witty read which engaged me from the first page. I loved how the hero and heroine of this romance skirted around each other until they finally admitted their feelings.

The secondary characters were great and very entertaining, the chemistry was felt throughout the book and the fun factor was amazing.

With a wonderful HEA, this read will fill your heart with love and joy.

I liked the career of proposal planner that Aphrodite has assumed in order to keep her family afloat. She is strong willed, capable, competent and organized. And she's afraid. Her need to control and categorize her books and her life help her to push fear aside. Henry is disorganized with a heart of gold. Together they cause sparks to fly as they embrace life so differently. This is a lovely story.

It’s a fun read that was entertaining. I loved Ditty and Henry but at times they were like oil and water but it was fun watching them circle each other. As organized as she was, he was disorganized and had no set plan for the future. There are several secondary characters who added to this story.
