What happens when a LitRPG world starts to break down?
This is a very strange book. I had never really considered the idea of surrealistic LitRPG, but this seems to be an example. The plot is odd, and often difficult to really follow. This isn't aided by the occasional switches to other points of view. But even with that, it is rather compelling.
Of the four main characters, only Vex and Derivan are really explored in this volume, though their development is well handled. Sev and Misa largely work in the background. While this makes some sense for the story being told here, I'd rather see more about the entire ensemble cast.
A final note: the ending of this book is not a resolution of much of anything. It's not quite a cliffhanger, in that the protagonists aren't in imminent mortal danger, but it's cliff-hanger adjacent.
I'm not sure where this story is going, and I'm not sure how much I want to go there with it, but it is unique and it's not unenjoyable.

If you loved the first one you will probably love this one. It has the same deep characters, wholesome friendships, interesting world. There is a slight romance that I did not care for at first but it grew on me. In this book the focus is mostly on the world, the magic system and Vex's story. I felt I got no answers on the God or info-lock mystery from the first book though. The book ends on a cliffhanger and I can not wait for the third book.

This was, primarily, Vex's book - and I really loved the exploration of both the magic system and Vex trying to break a cycle of generational trauma while also trying to save the world - and all while trying to figure out what's wrong with the world in the first place!
An excellent follow up to the first book, building up the mystery, the relationships between the characters, and the world they're trying to save.

2.75 stars. I did like this, but not as much as the first novel. It dragged a bit with occasionally cumbersome infodumps about magic theory when action was better called for. I am still interested in reading volume 3 but I think I need a break before continuing on.

Aww, Vex confessed his feelings 🥰 Still not sure how that's going to work out. Misa is my fave, zero filter, and swears like a sailor 😅
