Interest Level: K-3 Has your best friend ever gotten on your nerves? Can complete opposites even be best friends? Well Cookie and Milk prove that the answer to both of these questions is yes! Cookie (a nickname from her dad because she is so sweet) is book smart and love science. Milk (because her little brother can not say her real name, Mikaela) is very daring and loves to do stunts. When they were younger, their different personalities would annoy each other, but true blue friends don't stay mad at each other very long. Now that they are older, they inspire each other to be their best. Cookie create amazing inventions because of Milk's fearless ideas and Milk implements her heroic feats because of Cookie's creations. And what are all of these incredible creations and daring acts? Well you will have to read this sciencetastic* book to find out! (*sciencetastic = science & fantastic).
This book is such a fantastic book! These two girls show that diversity can be a great thing! They don't care that they are complete opposites; they use their differences as a plus. Another reason to love this book is that it is educational also. Throughout the book the little brother is funny and the author uses this to give definitions of scientific words. Another cool thing is at the back of the book. Michele McAvoy gives you facts of extraordinary women who excel scientifically and athletically. I think my favorite part of the book is the very last page that displays "s" words that make a best friend! What a much better world this would be if everyone implored these characteristics!! And I would be amiss if I didn't mention awesomely amazing illustrations. The colors are bright and the drawings are incredible! Do not miss this amazing new book for 2019!!
What is a great friendship book for elementary and middle school kids? Cookie & Milk by Michele McAvoy is!

Read this darling story today and loved it! Cookie and Milk couldn’t be more different from one another, but their uniqueness makes them the best of friends. Sweet story about celebrating the beauty that makes one special sprinkled with some fun science facts. 🌟
Cookies and Milk?! What a great combination - and that's exactly what is shown in this fun story about friendship through sisterhood. Some of our best relationships with others usually start off a little rocky at first, but eventually, after some time together, everything clicks!
This book will have you smiling from ear to ear as these two friends/sisters show you just how they balance out each other. They continuously praise each other for their accomplishments by giving credit to other for helping them to achieve their goals.
Cookie & Milk is an example of a healthy friendship between sisters. They really complement each other well! She is the meatball to my spaghetti. She is the plus to my minus. She is the straw to my juice box. She is my best friend. JINX!"
At the end of the story, the author included a page about famous women who have been the first to do some of the activities mentioned in the book. The author includes 5 "S" words to teach readers how to make a best friend.
The story emphasizes that different character traits can complement each other. ❤️ What I enjoyed most about the book was the engaging questions for parents, teachers, or caregivers at the beginning of the book. The author provides discussion questions that open the dialog up about multi-racial families and blended families. It is also a great book to help start the dialog about adoption with young children.
Additionally, the storyline celebrates females in STEM (science, technology, engineering & math). The story weaves in and defines the job responsibilities of Engineers, Mathematicians, and Scientists. More importantly, the children loved Cookie & Milk’s adventures!
This book is perfect for foster parents, adoptive parents, step-parents, bi-racial parents, caregivers, teachers, and homeschoolers!
I was gifted this book as a participant in Multicultural Children's Book Day 2023
There are so many really great things about this book! Oddly, one of my favorite things wasn't even actually part of the book, but the "Before Reading" discussion and thoughts for adult readers to think about and ask young readers. It even offered ideas and questions for before, during and after reading! I kinda wish every book did this, but then again, I kinda like being able to do that myself, but yeah, it would still be nice sometimes! Story is great, illustrations are great, all around just lovely.
Activities- -go through the prompts, or pick and choose -pick a project, and do it to a slightly smaller scale -eat milk and cookies! -what is something you can help your best friend with? What is something your best friend could help you with? -play a game that relies on teamwork -tie in other opposites
Cookie and Milk is an endearing book about two friends who aren't alike at all. Cookie, aka Khloe, is smart and loves math and science. She is also black. Milk, aka Mikaela, is white, loves sports and is all about adventure. They talk about the reasons why they are friends even though they are opposites, helping readers understand the true meaning of a friendship.
I love that there is a Before, During and After Reading Sidebar at the beginning of the book to help the adult reader guide the discussion with the young reader. At the end of the book, there is a Did You Know? section about famous women who did some amazing "firsts". Last, there is a page with 5 "S" words that make a good best friend.
I'd like to thank the author and illustrator for bringing such a sweet book to life. Thank you to Cardinal Rule Press for the gifted review copy. #ReadYourWorld
I received an electronic ARC from Cardinal Rule Press through Edelweiss+. Milk and Cookie enjoy different things but have found a way to make their friendship work. Cookie likes science and math; Milk likes sports. Readers see the struggles they went through and the ways they encourage each other. Without one, the other could not do what they want to do. McAlvoy's text offers a clear look at how they balance each other and explore new ideas together. Gibson's illustrations capture the fun and action to pull readers in to participate too. Mid elementary readers will see themselves in either Milk or Cookie. Terrific book to talk about how we balance each other and differences can strengthen friendships.
Cookie and Milk is a lovely story of opposites attracting and friendships enduring. Join these two friends (Khloe nicknamed Cookie) and Milk (her brother's nickname for Mikaela) who just "fit together" like cookies and milk. Each girl has a special style and personality that is quite different from the other, but their friendship is stronger due to their bond and the unique qualities they each offer. A great point that your friends don't have to be the same or only like the things that we like! Variety in opinions and interests can be a lot of fun. Lively illustrations and a sweet story make this a fun read!
There is nothing not to love and McAvoy and Gibson’s COOKIE AND MILK. Not only does it show two girls loving traditionally masculine activities like stunts and STEM, but it also tackles so many important questions in friendship and family. Encouraging diverse and multi-racial relationships, Cookie and Milk are able to acknowledge their difference but realize how well they complement and support each other. Milk gives Cookie more ideas for her science projects and Cookie helps Milk plan out her stunts. Featuring a blended family, I cannot recommend this book enough for learning about how to be a good friend, sibling, and have an all-around blast!
I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review for Multicultural Book Day.
The illustrations are colorful and cute and it's fun how the text is a conversation between the girls in color-coded speech bubbles. However, I was having a hard time with the naming convention (which the unnamed younger brother didn't fit into) and if you have to say "...they call me Milk. Not because my skin is really white, which it is..." maybe reconsider the names. Beyond that, the story didn't flow and I didn't see the addition of the little brother - who, to say again, didn't even have a name as necessary. It thought it was trying to do too much.
I loved this book about the power of differences in a friendship mixed with a dose of science, engineering, and sports. The narration kept things funny and moving along at an exciting pace. We get a chance to see a strong female friendship where they empower each other to achieve great things. We also get a chance to see that they were not always friends and had to work through their differences. The illustrations are gorgeous, bright, and fun. This is a great bridge to picture book biographies.
Whimsical, colorful, and fun, this is a tribute to the idea that kids (especially girls) who are nothing alike can be friends and even better together. There's an emphasis on STEM concepts. Some pages have definitions of terms like "mathematician" and "engineer." A number of famous women scientists and athletes are profiled in the back. And there's even a pre-reading guide for parents in the front, to help kids get the most out of the book. A great addition to the girl power canon!
Two friends (or rather, sisters) couldn’t be more different. Cookie is the smart scientist and mathematician. Milk is the sporty and adventurous athlete. Instead of clashing, the two girls bring out the best in each other--just like cookies and milk! What a great message for kids. Fun, light-hearted text by Michele McAvoy is complemented by bright, candy-colored, energetic illustrations by Jessica Gibson. Backmatter includes guided questions that highlight the themes of this sweet book.
This is a story about two friends who are complete opposites. Cookie (Khloe) likes science and math, while Milk (Mikaela) is adventurous and a risk taker. While they may not look alike or act alike, they complement each other in every way. Their differences help to push each other to be the best they can be. This book would make a great springboard for a discussion with children about diversity and friendship. And that friends don't have to look or act alike to be friends.
The publisher donated copies of this book for my book program- Stags Read. They did not request a review, but I read all picture books before they go out in book deliveries.
This book is an adorable idea. It is beautifully illustrated and deals with how very different people can be friends. It reads sort of like the theme song/ intro of a kid cartoon. So I'm guessing this is probably going to be the first in a series. (And it would make a really cute cartoon!)
A fun and engaging story that proves how friends are stronger together no matter their differences. The illustrations add so much color and character to two already colorful characters and the facts that were set alongside the story created a unique element that elevated the stem aspect of the book. This story truly is about empowering each other and finding what is special within a friendship.
Cookie and Milk may be different but they are the best of friends. This is a fun book about friendship and how opposites can work together to do great and fun things! Love the 5 tips at the end on what makes a good friend and the bright, colorful illustrations. And as a former engineer, I love the STEM references!
Cookie and Milk is a cute story about two girls that are polar opposites and best friends. The author walks you through their relationship and the highs and lows. It includes a good dose of science and math that sometimes feels a little forced, but my kids loved the story and I think your will too!
Two girls with different interests and personalities show how those differences solidify their friendship in this sweet and uplifting story. The bold and colorful illustrations work nicely with the text to make for an engaging read!
Cookies and Milk celebrates differences as well as the beauty and struggles of friendship. This adorable story has a solid growth mindset base that helps kids see how encouraging and inspiring others can lead to great relationships and stronger individuals.
Negative stars. We don't need to point out how "really white" a character's skin is. Enough.
This was another one of those books that wasn't a story. It was just two characters saying how great the other one is. Tell a story and quit emphasizing the characters' appearances.
Such a fun, wonderful book for kids! Highly recommend that parents/grandparents/guardians get this book for the child(ren) in their lives. Teachers/Educators get one for your classrooms!
1 science-loving girl + 1 sports-loving girl = 2 best friends. This book shows how best friends can support each other, even if they appear to be as different as they can be.
Two lifelong friends are polar oppoosites who use their differnces to makle the others life better. Pure friendship with science and sports mixed in. Elementary up as its told in speech bubbles
