A rash of elaborate cat burglaries of luxury buildings in Manhattan has the city panicked.
When a group of social media obsessed millennials--a loosely organized crew that call themselves "urban explorers"--are suspected in the heists, NYPD detective Jake Rivett is assigned the case. Rivett dives deep into the urban exploration scene in pursuit of the truth.
But what, and who, he finds--deep in the sewers, up in the cranes above under-construction skyscrapers, and everywhere else in New York--will change not only Jake, but the city itself.
THE FIRST RULE OF URBAN EXPLORATION IS: NEVER GO ALONE.
*Each RIVETT novel is a heart-pounding, self-contained thriller. But the series can also be enjoyed in series order*
Denison is a writer in Los Angeles. His original screenplay, Vanish Man, is set up at Lionsgate.

More from Kirkus Reviews: "What truly elevates the tale is the author's insider's view of Wall Street traders and how they think and talk. [Flash Crash] succeeds at updating the Masters of the Universe mindset to the present."
More from BestThrillers.com: "As detectives go, Rivett is hardly ordinary. Among other quirks, he sings for a struggling screamo band in his spare time . . . riding shotgun with Rivett as he unravels this audacious caper is immensely satisfying, and the book's immersion into the financial services culture feels authentic and right. By the time you're finished with Flash Crash, you'll be jonesing for a second Jake Rivett novel."
More from IndieReader.com: Flash Crash, the first in the Jake Rivett series and Denison Hatch's debut novel, provides plenty of action and thrills. Deftly going from the rich world of bankers to the dregs of Chinatown, Hatch's pacing ensures there is never a dull moment. The plot alternates primarily between David and Jake, occasionally showing Vlad's point of view, and bounces around in time, from the characters' rough childhoods to their present day predicament. Halting the story to explain something that occurred long ago is risky... but Hatch pulls it off, making each scene just as exciting as the last.
More from film & television writer Alexis C. Jolly: "Having grown up devouring my father's collection of the Jack Ryan series, I can say without hesitation that Denison Hatch is the 21st-century's Tom Clancy. The kinetic characters leap off the page in a superbly twisty plot that feels scarily close to hap
A truly fabulous and entertaining story from start to finish. I already knew that Denison Hatch was a great writer after reading his first book ‘Flash Crash’ (which is also definitely worth a read). He’s put together a great character with Jake Rivett, and a very entertaining and memorable plot. Detective Jake Rivett was definitely not your average cop, far from it. He specialised in undercover assignments, and being a bit of a loner, he liked to do things his own way. Jake found it easy to fit in with the underworld and criminals, even though he believed in justice and the letter of the law, he just didn’t fit the box like all the other detectives. He started out integrating himself by selling stolen goods, and building the trust through word of mouth. What really helped him was that he didn’t look or act like a cop, with his long hair and his current lifestyle. Singing in a heavy metal band and living in the Bronx certainly helped with the image he was trying to convey. His next assignment was personally going to be one of his toughest yet. A group of climbers had broken into a number of properties belonging to Arthur Metropolis, one of Seattle’s richest men. He was a self-made billionaire that started with nothing, and built up an empire of properties. The fact that he was good friends with the Mayor, made it a high priority for the police to solve, and quickly. Jake’s number one fear was heights, so this wasn’t going to be easy to go undercover with a group of climbers, and look confident. Jake’s lucky that Mona, one of the climbers takes a liking to him, and helps him out. He also has his bosses breathing down his neck wanting quick results. If you enjoy Detective Thrillers, then this is certainly a great book to add to your list.
I didn't read Mr. Hatch's first book, 'Flash Crash' but have placed it on my TBR list. Jake Rivett, detective is far from your average cop. He mostly worked undercover. Jake isn't a real social person. He prefers to be a loner and he definitely likes doing things his way. He is definitely on the side of justice and likes to do things by the law. On a different note, being undercover suits him fine, He fits into that world and no one would ever know. He isn't your ordinary detective. He's in a league all his own. He fit into the undercover world to a "T" with his long hair and the lifestyle he led. He was in a heavy metal band which helped to keep up his pretense of being an undercover cop. He had to keep the image and that he did. He's been assigned a case that will probably his hardest yet. Properties owned by Arthur Metropolis, one of Seattle's richest men, has been broken into. This became a high priority case since Arthur was friends with the mayor.Jake has a fear, believe it or not and that fear is heights. That's going to make this case really tough. How was he going to go undercover and fit in with a bunch of climbers.? But Jake knows he has to do this. One of the climbers, Mona, takes a liking to Jake and takes him under her wing. The author gives you characters that come to life on the page in front of you. The plot gives you a little variety, from the deep dark alleys to the cities largest skyscrapers. The pace keeps you going but not so fast that you get lost.If you love detective, undercover work, suspense, then go undercover with Jake Rivett and take on New York. Jake will have your back for sure, but hold on tight, because it will be a roller coaster ride you won't be able to get off of.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author and PUYB Virtual Book Tours and voluntarily decided to review it.
What a terrific story! I loved the fast pace and slick writing, but mostly I loved Jake Rivett, a truly unique character who had me at “Hello.” The novel’s overall premise--corrupt government official colludes with heartless real estate developer-- was valid, although far from unique, but the way Mr. Hatch wove in the concept of urban exploring kept me up past my bedtime, turning pages.
This is the second in a planned series of books featuring the main character, and Jake Rivett can easily handle a long series. If I didn’t have such a long TBR list, I’d certainly read the first in the series (Flash Crash).
If you enjoy high-octane thrillers filled with action and populated by quirky, unique characters, I highly recommend you give the Jake Rivett series a try.

As an undercover cop, Jake lives in the Underbelly of New York, and as an adrenalin junkie, that suits him, but his readers have to somewhat be that way inclined as well, just to follow him without getting serious cardiac probs! For me, nothing is as suspenseful as Undercover crime fiction, if the protagonist is a friend of mine. As any writer worth their salt should make him or her. The characters live and breathe, the flow is continuous, but the suspense modulates like waterboarding with rests... See our complete review at www.bookpostmortem.wordpress.com
In my review of indie author Denison Hatch’s first book within the Jake Rivett series, Flash Crash, I complained that NYPD police officer Jake Rivett was a bully and nobody likes bullies. Well I am going to have to eat my words on that complaint as Jake Rivett is far from being a bully in Hatch’s new book Never Go Alone. As for nobody liking bullies, the fact that Donald Trump was favorably elected as president indicates to me that some people actually do like bullies. So in both cases I am wrong. In Flash Crash, Rivett was a secondary character which meant that the reader didn’t really get to know him. In that novel Rivett went to extreme measures to coerce informants into giving out information which is why I considered him a bully. In Never Go Alone, Rivett is once again an intense individual but instead of terrifying sources of information into spilling the beans, he tricks them into giving him information by getting them to trust him. Which is something that I can truly appreciate.
Never Go Alone is a crime thriller with Jake Rivett going undercover to investigate a series of unusual robberies. The robberies are unique in that the thieves target locations owned by multibillionaire and real estate mogul Arthur Metropolis. The modus operandi of the robbers is also quite unusual as the thieves enter their targets through what would normally be inaccessible such as entering through the window of a top floor apartment of a high rise building using a construction crane as a launching post. The thieves consider themselves part of a group known as urban explorers, thrill seekers that explore man-made structures such as abandoned buildings, underground sewers or storm drains. It is the world of urban exploration that Jake Rivett must immerse himself in which would normally be right up his alley except for one important fact. He has a profound fear of heights.
Never Go Alone is an intoxicating thrill and Hatch is on his way to making Jake Rivett a fun and likable character. Even though a sizeable number of Americans think that being a bully is a positive trait, I am not one of them, so I am glad to see that Jake Rivett is not a bully. Though it didn’t have quite the amount of techno-speak that was part of Hatch’s first techno-thriller Flash Crash, it did elaborate on some interesting photographic techniques used by urban explorers.
Never Go Alone could easily be read as a standalone novel.
Jake Rivett returns in this exhilarating second book from Denison Hatch. Detective Jake Rivett once again embarks on an undercover assignment in a way that no other cop would dare act or behave. With his dishevelled appearance, Bronx apartment, his love for heavy metal and propensity to steal in order to gain the trust of street gangs, no, no one would believe that Jake Rivett was one of New York's finest.
Having read Hatch's debut book in the series Flash Crash, I knew that I would love this book although I was surprised how different the stories actually were. If you have not read the first, do not despair, these are certainly stand-alone books but the character is greatly enhance when read in order. Hatch has shown a fantastic ability to delve into the criminal mind and set the reader on a fast paced journey through the hidden undergrowth and tunnels of a well loved city.
In Never Go Alone, we see Rivett face one of his toughest challenges to date, heights! After a number of reported break ins by climbers from property tycoon Arthur Metropolis, a personal friend of the Mayor, Rivett is sent to infiltrate the group. Tracking them down was the easy part, convincing them that he is a good enough climber to join them may be a little trickier, lucky for Rivett, one of the group members, Mona, takes a liking to him and supports his efforts.
Jake is a unique and rare character, most readers will be able to identify with him and befriend him almost instantly. Hatch needs congratulating on his down to earth, real to life story telling that also takes you on a thrilling ride. Never Go Alone is certainly one of those books which brings today's youth and technology to the forefront whilst leaving us older readers identifying with the people trying to understand them.
Another quite unusual story, as was the first Jake Ryvett book, Flash Crash. In this narrative one discovers a whole lot of really cool and facts about an alternate lifestyle in New York and Manhattan. One discovers the tunnels, sewers, skyscrapers and Statue of Liberty - all discovered in unusual ways. Somehow, with all this discovering going on, the almost background story of the police action comes through. More of the action though seems to be a preparation for a movie, which I wouldn't be surprised to watch in a year or two..
A thrill ride with more twists and turns than the worlds largest roller coaster. Go deep undercover with Jake Rivett in his second outing, and explore parts of New York you never knew existed. A fast paced, intricately detailed thrill ride, that will keep you guessing until the very end. Jake is a unique antihero who never fails to keep the reader firmly in his corner. A top notch thriller!
