The third Clash of Steel anthology is a blast! Triple the size of both previous volumes in this series, it is jam-packed with great tales of demonic battle and wit. Armand out-does his previous works, doing a terrific job of melding the distinct styles of fourteen authors. The stories provide a wide range of writing skills and protagonists; a good mix of battle resolution through blood-spewing, limb-hewing action and mental gymnastics, subterfuge, and plain old quick thinking. There are stories that made me think, stories that made me laugh, and stories that invoked my blood-lust!

I found the stories to be over-whelmingly creative, with even the predictable ones avoiding tedious monotony in new and different ways. It’s true: Each story pits demonic fiend against mortal hero. But which character is to blame for their predicament? Which one is truly less than honorable? Which one is the real devil? These weren’t fourteen tales of mindless slaughter, of muscle-bound oafs defeating or being defeated by Satan’s minions — these were adventures filled with dilemmas that could not simply be solved by might and right but also needed someone bright.

I find it interesting, however, that in each of the last two Carnifex Press books I’ve read (this one and the first Freehold book) the author that could arguably be considered the most published of the listed authors based upon the included author bios has written my least favorite story in both books. I’m not sure why this is, but I thought both of these author’s stories contained awkward writing not indicative of such accomplished writers.

Overall, this is a star in the Carnifex Press lineup, a book I’m happy to add to my library. It is a well-put together, well-assembled collection of talented writers. I’m proud to say I’ve interacted with seven of them through the SFReader forum and encourage anyone interested in speculative fiction to come join us! Would I recommend Clash of Steel: Demon edited by Armand Rosamilia to my friends? YES!
