The Wassailers

Rate this book
On a moonshadow wintry night, When the sky is a lake of black ink Afloat with the bloom of the dying light, The Wassailers will come to drink. Em Dehaney's evil Christmas poem The Wassailers is a traditional folk-tale with a terrifying twist, warning of the dangers of modern greed and consumerism. Krzysztof Wronski's pen and ink illustrations are dark, dense and dripping with old world menace. Burdizzo Books have brought the two together, along with foreword by Graham Masterton, in this gruesome yet gripping festive nightmare. Curl up by the fire, fill your cup with mulled wine and pray The Wassailers never knock on your door...

It has been a delight to have the opportunity to review this seasonal offering by Em Dehaney, darker than most Christmas poems, this actually taught me something. I had until now never heard of The Wassailing so it gave me something to research too!

With forewords from Graham Masterton and Em Dehaney, you’ll be well introduced to the idea of what you’re about the read. The illustrations by Krzysztof Wronski complement the poem and the story it tells beautifully.

I very much enjoyed the poem, and because of the subject matter you don’t really need to see yourself as a poetry fan in order to enjoy it. I liked discovering something I didn’t know about.

Dive into the world of the Wassailers this Christmas, and once Dehaney’s poem has frightened you to death, learn about the pagan traditions and even how to make Wassail (which is a festive drink).

Following the poem Dehaney has included some ideas of Charities you may like to give to, and also outlined those sponsored by Burdizzo Books so make sure you have a look at that and then check out the short stories at the end too.

This is a poem you can make a tradition out of, I know I’ll be digging this book out for another look in the years to come, when the nights are dark and cold and I’m sitting by my fire with a cup of Wassail, christmas lights a twinkling on my tree..

I thought this would be just the poem, but there are other stories here as well, some by Em Dehany and some by Matthew Cash, so it's a little anthology of stories that have something to do with Christmas time.

Even though I read the Kindle version - the illustrations are still as evocative with just the right sense of wrongness.

It was a wonderfully wicked read and I had saved it just to read before the holiday season this year just to give it added ambience. I have already recommended it to some one asking for some holiday horror fare.

This beautiful, macabre Christmas poem will bring you chills. Christmas is the second best time of year for horror stories. This is something Em Dehaney must know, because her poem is full of dread and terror.

The haunting illustrations of Krzysztof Wronski are paired perfectly with Dehaney’s magnificent poetry. The combination is a match made in heaven…or at least a cold, wintery hell.

The Wassailers is a terrifying poem that shows what happens when you don't give them what they want.

There's also a few short stories with Christmas Eve zombies, 5 Golden rings, an angelic cow and pipers who won't stop playing amidst carnage.

A Christmassy poem written in a traditional style with a chilling theme, along with well-suited spooky illustrations. There's also some bonus Christmas-themed short horror stories.
