Tove Jansson was born and died in Helsinki, Finland. As a Finnish citizen whose mother tongue was Swedish, she was part of the Swedish-speaking Finns minority. Thus, all her books were originally written in Swedish.
Although known first and foremost as an author, Tove Jansson considered her careers as author and painter to be of equal importance.
Tove Jansson wrote and illustrated her first Moomin book, The Moomins and the Great Flood (1945), during World War II. She said later that the war had depressed her, and she had wanted to write something naive and innocent. Besides the Moomin novels and short stories, Tove Jansson also wrote and illustrated four original and highly popular picture books.
Jansson's Moomin books have been translated into 33 languages.
On my trip to Finland, one of our guides introduced us to the Moomins, a popular family of cuddly-looking creatures with some of the stories being written as political satire, much like many of the Theodore Geisel/Dr Suess works. This particular Moomin story, however, seems to be 100% sweet bedtime story for the littles. Moomintroll can’t get to sleep despite extra snuggles from Moominmamma, the loan of Bear from his sister Snorkmaiden and a bedtime story from Moominpappa. The story leads Moomintroll to search for his own star to Dreamland but a cloudy night makes that impossible, however, Snorkmaiden constructs a star especially for Moomintroll which finally lulls him to sleep. What a wonderful story of family, sharing and doing for others; perfect bedtime story for toddlers through grade 2. While I might not be Finnish, I think I could really get into these adorable trolls-that-look-like-cuddly-hippos and may have to buy more than just this book for my grandkids!
I have a lot of questions after reading this book. What is a moomin? I didn’t see one at the zoo today. And is snorkmaiden his sister or his nanny? And why can’t I sleep with bun bun? And what’s a United Kingdom?
