Gil is excited to share his special day with all his friends. However, when he asks them what day it might be, 'Monday' is all he is told. Could his birthday be missed by everyone, leaving him sad and forlorn? Neo read this one to me and we saw just how surprising things can be, when you least expect them. Neo reminded me that his birthday is not too far off, though I best not pretend I do not know it when he asks.
What I really enjoyed about this book was how the illustrations lead to what will happen at the end of the story. I found that there were some words repeated, but not repeated phrases that a child could be asked what the ant will say next. I thought the book was too short and could have survived another friend keeping the surprise from the ant, Gil. I liked the idea of making a bookmark together after reading the book, but that seems more like what would be needed for chapter books, not books of this length. This is a good book for emerging readers. It is simple, short, & easy to read. It is also written in Spanish. At the end of the book, there is an activity to make a bookmark of the ant.
I came across this book in an elementary classroom that I was helping organize, and I absolutely loved it. This book just shows the English version, but the one I came across could be read in either English OR Spanish which I thought was so cool! There are so many different backgrounds that students come from and I think it is important to be able to accommodate to all of them. Giving children the option to read in either English or Spanish (depending on their background) is what this book is all about so it's a super fun and interesting read for the students.
This is a level 1 storybook; the text is basic but still tells a nice little story. An ant comes and asks his friend "What Day is It" "Monday" He thinks they have forgotten it's his special day... but they give him a surprise birthday party. Many repetitive words and phrases to help a learning reader. It caught and held my 4 year old granddaughter's attention and she was even repeating words after I read them.
Gil is so excited that it is his special day! He asks all his friends "What day is it?" and they all answer "Monday." Gil becomes sad, because he thinks everyone has forgotten his special day. However, they didn't forget! They planned him a surprise birthday party!
What Day Is It? had cute illustrations, and my 4-year-old was able to identify the ant's emotions. The story, however, was cranked out in under 5 minutes. Very superficial.
