Rob Biddulph’s Sunk! is a vibrant and heartwarming tale that combines humor, adventure, and friendship to captivate young readers. The story follows Penguin Blue and his friends as they embark on a high-seas adventure, complete with a pirate ship, buried treasure, and unexpected challenges. Written in lively rhyming text, the book naturally supports phonological awareness by engaging children with rhythm, rhyme, and alliteration. Biddulph’s playful use of language, paired with his signature bold and colorful illustrations, invites readers to explore sound patterns, such as the lively onomatopoeia of splashes and creaks, which brings the oceanic setting to life. The narrative also lends itself to activities that build early literacy skills, including oral blending and segmenting of simple words like "sail" and "ship." With its charming characters and fun-filled plot, Sunk! is a delightful read-aloud book that not only entertains but also encourages young learners to engage with language in a creative and meaningful way.
This is the first Penguin Blue story we've read with our little one, but it's a delight. The illustrations are bold and colourful, most of them taking up entire pages, while the rhyming couplets tell the story in a quick and wonderful way. With not too much writing on each page, this story is quite simplistic and perfect for younger sailors, but I'm sure that the older adventurers will enjoy it too.
Impeccable rhyming structure and very cute illustrations, my kids love to recite this on outloud, memorable lines that will forever reoccur to me in odd moments such as the checkout queue including:
"A desert island small and sandy/Phew! That is extremely handy"
And "The once majestic Neptune's Dread slept silent on the ocean bed"
I think this book is alsome also, the picture looks like it‘s real! In this book I can always remember how they help the ship raised. Wish Rob Biddulph can write more books because,I really wanted to read your books. So,if you can write more, please write more.
Penguin Blue returns for some piratical adventuring. Absolutely wonderful stuff. Story and illustrations top-notch. Fun, funny and lots of heart. All the young sailors/pirates in my life will be getting a copy!
Penguin Blue is back to play With all the cast of Blown Away! You’ve read that, right? It won some prizes Though what it lacked was PIRATE GUISES A dress-up adventure! A crew! It’s begun! So yo ho ho! Here’s a book full of fun!
Now Cutlass Jeff and First Mate Flo With Wilbur Seal are good to go But, ooops! Too early for this juncture – Our captain’s ship’s sustained a puncture! You’d think to sink and be left swimming Might mark the end, but it’s just the beginning…
This penguin captain’s never defeated. (A lesson you’ll learn from this book once completed) He’s good with solutions, and don’t overlook: A lot of his knowledge he’s gleamed from a book. And on that: Young readers with keen eyes for riches Might spot a sub-story concealed in the pictures…
Its rhythm is catchy; it’s zingy and bold, With a message more precious than rubies or gold – That new friends are really the best kind of treasure And sharing the fun gives the best kind of pleasure – That Biddulph’s delivered. My praise, I won’t mask it. This Sunk! ought to float. Over there. To your basket.
Un album un peu trop absurde qui aborde le plaisir de jouer et d'imiter, ainsi que le plaisir de la découverte (de l'exploration) de nouveaux mondes...
Hi, everyone! I'm working for a Russian website Papmambook.ru dedicated to children's books and children's reading. We've been building the English version of the website. Recently we published Rob Biddulph's interview where he talks about how he creates his characters, why he prefers to write in rhyme, and what he reads his daughters before bed.
