"Are you going to tell us what's going on?" -- Jean 'Marvel Girl' Grey, of the inaugural X-Men

Well, sure, Jean - Mythos is a spirited collection of a half-dozen retellings of superhero origin stories, somewhat updated and/or modernized for a 21st-century audience, that are culled from the mighty Marvel's legendary line-up of flagship characters from the 1960's - Spider-Man, the X-Men, the Hulk, the Fantastic Four, and Captain America. The one 'odd man out' is Ghost Rider, and I'll take an educated guess that his inclusion was likely due to the 2007 movie version, starring Nicolas Cage, that premiered about a year before the release of this volume. (I'll bet if Mythos was issued more recently that Black Panther would've instead been rightfully included here.) It's not essential reading for either long-time fans or those already overly familiar with these household-name characters, but Pablo Rivera's stylish artwork is a definite asset. For example, he illustrates the human manifestation of the devil to resemble new age musician and former 'Entertainment Tonight' host John Tesh during the infamous 'selling of the soul' moment in Ghost Rider's tale. I laughed like hell . . . pun intended. ;-)

This is a collection of six retellings of some Marvel characters’ origins. Captain America, the Fantastic Four, Hulk, Spider-Man, the X-Men and Ghost Rider all get the modernisation treatment and, as much as Paul Jenkins is a great writer, I didn’t like a lot of his retcons and I generally find these type of ‘updated origin’ stories entirely superfluous.

Paulo Rivera’s painted artwork is absolutely gorgeous, though, and these books would be worth the time for the artwork alone.

Summary: This collection of origin tales details the beginnings of many beloved superheroes such as Spider-Man, the Incredible Hulk, and Captain America.

Verdict: Messy art and old news make this an unnecessary read that hardcore fans may still appreciate.

Yay!: The premise seems to be a slight update and modernization of the origin stories, though not in any earth-shattering way. Younger readers who don't know the stories might enjoy these. The Captain America story in particular was done quite well.

Nay!: The art is very stylized and hard on the eyes. The panels looks painted rather than drawn, and the blurry effect gets old, fast. Speaking of old, these origin stories have been told so many times in print and film that there are no surprises here, making for an uneventful experience.

Another superhero book that makes me go "umm, why was this created?". While I can recognize the hard work and talent that went into the art, it was just not interesting to look at. It was boring for the subject matter and nothing about this really said 'superhero' to me. It might be interesting to n00bs who know nothing about various Marvel mythos but honestly you can learn this all in 20 minutes on Wikipedia so why pay $24.99? I do not recommend.

В той час стрімко розвивалась комікс-індустрія і вперше з’явились добре відомі герої, котрі тепер дивляться на нас з постерів супергеройських фільмів і обкладинок сучасних мальованих історій. В своєму романі “Американські боги” письменник Ніл Ґейман показав різних божеств, котрі прибули на землі Америки і видозмінились там, наприклад скандинавський Одін став містером Венсді, іфрит перетворився у водія таксі, Тот стає містером Ібісом і так далі. Але в дійсності, якщо замислитись, то справжній пантеон Нової Америки це її супергерої. У витоках коміксів “Марвел” стояли легендарні художники та сценаристи. Найвідомішим з них вважається Стен Лі, котрий здобув свою славу через камео у супергеройських фільмах. Він створив Людину Павука, Фантастичну Четвірку, Халка, Людей Ікс та інших героїв. Культову славу здобув Джек “Король” Кірбі, саме він намалював всіх вище перелічених героїв окрім Людини Павука, а також створив власний космо-всесвіт, згодом його роботами надихнувся ще один геній – Майк Міньйола. Стів Дітко вперше намалював Людину Павука і придумав його легендарний червоно-синій костюм.
Тому буває таке, що переглянувши фільм, чи прочитавши якийсь сучасний комікс, хочеться прочитати першооснову – роботу з котрої все почалось. Тут постає проблема – треба розуміти, що жанр дуже сильно змінився порівняно з першими своїми спробами, комікси золотої та срібної доби були перенасичені текстом, дивними для сучасного читача вставними описами і пафосними коментарями, зараз це виглядає досить наївно, тому що тоді комікси, створювались в основному для дітей.
Тут з’являється тандем Пола Дженкінса і Паоло Рівери – двоє авторів беруть на свої плечі нелегке, але благородне завдання – переосмислити і подати в сучасному оформленні найперші історії, дебюти культових персонажів. Пол Дженкінс – призер Премії Айснера – своєрідного Оскара у світі Коміксів, цю нагроду він отримав разом з геніальним Джеєм Лі за історію про расу нелюдів – інопланетян, котрі опинились на Землі, також він створив персонажа Вартового і написав серію похмурих історій про Нічного Вовкулаку. Паоло Рівера – художник гіперреаліст, в основному він малює обкладинки для коміксів, тому що його стиль досить затратний за часом, а деякі обкладинки справжні витвори мистецтва (Наприклад серія робі для “Геллбоя і БПРО”). Як бачите – команда зібралась хоч куди і вони були приречені на успіх.
Під обкладинкою “Легенд” читач знаходить шість різних історій, кожна присвячена першому випуску про певну команду чи героя, про них кілька слів нижче.
Люди Ікс це римейк однойменної роботи Стена Лі і Джека Кірбі. Тут, команда професора Ксав’єра зустрічається зі своїм одвічним ворогом – Магнето. Якщо порівняти сюжети оригіналу і римейку, то другий значно жорстокіший, починається сценою катування, а закінчується знищенням цілої секретної станції з усіма її робітниками. Герої теж можуть не встигати – основний посил комікса, якщо опустити явні посилання на проблему расизму.
Неймовірний Халк, це переосмислення іншої роботи Кірбі та Лі, цей комікс мені сподобався найбільше. Основна заслуга тут належить Рівері – він прекрасно зобразив трансформацію нервового ботана у машину для убивства, суперова динаміка.
Про Людину Павука чув кожен, як і про фразу “З великою силою приходить велика відповідальність”. Тут Дженкінс не додав нічого нового, бо не варто винаходити велосипед заново – та ж смерть дядька Бена, той же грабіжник, той самий Пітер Паркер. Рівера присмачив це все діло хорошою дозою гіперреалізму.
Фантастична четвірка теж не відійшла надто далеко від першооснови, початковий задум Лі та Кірбі зберегли, а деякі панелі Рівера повністю скопіював, цим самим віддаючи данину легенді. Окремої похвали заслуговує гіперреалістична схема Бакстер Білдінґ в розрізі.
Капітан Америка від Джо Саймона і Джека Кірбі теж трохи змінився в ньому акцент перейшов на повагу до ветеранів і простих солдатів, не супергероїв. Тут же з’являється картинка з мему – Кеп котрий б’є Гітлера (правда тут він замінений Черовним Черепом, а сам Гітлер з’являється у відображенні щита на обкладинці).
Найбільше здивування в мене викликав Примарний Вершник, от його я не очікував тут зустріти, не те щоб не любив його, просто існують значно відоміші герої – Зірвиголова, Залізна людина, Тор. Але тим не менш переказ оригінальної історії Томаса, Фрідріха та Плуґа вийшов драйвовий. Небезпечні трюки на мотоциклі, угода з дияволом і палаючий скелет на харлі девідсоні – все це є в комплекті.
Видання від MAL'OPUS, як завжди на висоті – вже звичний софт тач, якісний переклад та друк, цупке зшивання і вибіркове лакування. Із задоволенням кладу його на полицю до “Секретної війни” та “Дедпула”. Нарешті з’явився такий комікс Марвелів, котрий можна рекомендувати всім без розбору – новачки дізнаються, як народжувались легенди, а олди заново перечитають старі історії в сучасній інтерпретації та кінематографічному виконанні. Читати всім, це значуща книга.

Сьогодні, відповіддю на питання "чим зайняти себе?", я потихеньку розпаковую пакунок з придбаного на ЧП мальописів. Прочитав "Легенди MARVEL" Пола Дженкінса і Паоло Рівери.

Хто на сьогодні не знає оріджинів персонажів з MCU? Мабуть, усі. Цей рекап заснований на класичних вже "перших появах" культових персів видавництва Marvel, і він прикольний і я подивився на деякі оріджини дещо з іншого боку. З усіх мабуть я хочу виділити два номери, це #5 та #6 за списком в виданні Mal'opus, про Фантастичну четвірку та Кепа Америку. І от на них я відчував себе, більш заглибленим в історію людиною, тобто коли оповідь про четвірку йде від того, що їх викликає на допит Уряд США, щоб якось проконтролювати незнайому, непідкорену силу яка присутня в цій четвірці. І вони потихеньку розповідають нам усе, що ми маємо розуміти про дану команду супергероїв, першу супер-родину у коміксах , де вона є саме сім'єю. Мене це трохи повернуло в той час, коли по телевізору споглядав стару екранізацію від Фоксів із Альбою та Крісом Евансом на ролях Жінки-невидимки та Факела відповідно. Номер приводить у кінці до того, що вони обіцяють робити все на благо людства і нас підводять до придбання Рідом будівлі Бакстера вже такої рідної штаб-квартири Ф4 , для мене по хорошому рідний такий оріджин який чудово пам'ятаю. Але для сторожилів марвелу, ці історію нічого нового не привносять, як наприклад осучаснення в Алтімейт всесвіті при Бендісі, чи то Season One (як я зрозумів, такий собі аналог Year One від DC). Там можливо все напорядок краще, щодо осучаснення появ культових персонажів, наприклад той ж Season One я не читав, тим паче на українському ринку представлений лише томик про Тора.
Шостий номер був про кепа, і він мені сильно сподобався за рахунок того, як у кінці Кеп ностальгує за минулим сидячі за столом із старим побратимом. Випуск теж швиденько за 20-24 сторінки наново знайомить із Капітаном Америкою, іконою та справжнім патріотом своєї Батьківщини. І він мене заціпив, його розповіддю як він проходив битви Другої Світової Війни трішки про сутички із Черепом, трохи про Бакі це все цікаво. Мені особливо, бо Капітана є багацько цікавого (#видайтеукраїнською ран пана Брубейкера на Кепі, будь ласка!) і ця історія його пробудження мені сподобалась, не без допомоги останніх фреймів.
Чесно, єдине що збиває з пантелику це номер про Примарного Вершника і він хоча і прикольний через малюнок Рівери, є по суті зайвим в цій канві де є оповіді про Людей Ікс, Галка, Людину-Павука тощо. Не знаю, нащо було пхати саме його в цю концепцію. Я б волів бачити туж Залізну-людину, наприклад.

Можу багато співати про малюнок пана Паоло. Він дуже естетичний! Нагадує чимось мені малюнок Алекса Роса на "Дивах" Б'юсіка. Багато соковитих фреймів, чудова композиція панелей, особливо в номері про Галка сторінка з перетворенням прекрасна.

Це досить прикольний комікс, із прохідним номером в середині але то не сильно критично враховуючи, що серед них є вже наявні Ікс Мени, Павуччо , Четвірка та Галк із Кепом. Гарно буде перечитати колись, коли зариюсь глибоко в комікси Марвел а так лише поновив спогади, якщо в мене з'явились питання як виник той, чи інший персонаж можу цілком скористатись і цією книжкою. Гарне видання від Mal'opus.

Not a bad reenvision of the origins of six of the most popular classic Marvel characters by the teaming of Jenkins and Rivera. While the events and circumstances surrounding each origin story for each character are still preserved, Jenkins’ narrative style delivers the “ground-to-reality” element necessary to re-explore, and update these characters for a modern view that, far from ditching, or replacing the originals, it respects and complements the essentials of each franchise. Rivera, on the other hand, is a complete 180 degree turn compared to Kirby, or Ditko’s mythic art styles. For once, he is best known for his initial oil panting style, which can be a result of being a hardcore fan of Alex Ross, but with a distinctive identity to it. Suffice to say, each frame painted in all six issues looks fantastic and memorable, as intended given this book’s purpose. Nevertheless, not all issues are as good, however none are bad necessarily. Jenkins is a funny writer, given sufficiently great premises that somehow are left behind near the ending of his scripts, never mind the execution that, for the most part, works just fine, and the way he writes dialogue and character interactions is neat enough to create an interest within the reader.
The issues gathered explore the origins of Spider-Man, The X-Men, Ghost Rider, Fantastic Four, Captain America, and The Incredible Hulk, in that order. To my surprise, X-Men, Ghost Rider, Fantastic Four, and Captain America were the best entries, being Ghost Rider an unexpected satisfying re-invention of Johnny Blaze’s alter-ego, while maintaining the classic 70s Heavy Metal-Country vibe of the comic. Captain America was the solidest of all the issues, with a touching and heavy-inspired depiction of his world-view and his heroic persona, while also celebrating the patriotic roots of its origins and ideologies without feeling like a pamphlet boasting Army propaganda or whatever. Both, Fantastic Four and X-Men gave me an idea of how a potential modern adaptation into movies can be, especially the X-Men one, which I felt tackled the core ideology and conflict behind these character’s main conflict. As for the rest, they were fine, but I expected a little more substance from Spider-Man, and Hulk, which fair enough started solidly enough, but their conclusions seemed uneven, and offbeat for characters of that size in popularity. Surprisingly, Jenkins omitted certain characters that, frankly, I was surprised weren’t even here; Daredevil, Wolverine, Punisher… I understand there’s an “Avengers” version of this, so I’m assuming Iron Man, Ant-Man, Wasp, and Thor might be covered already, and to answer the ones I mentioned earlier, maybe the idea was to stick with “Golden Age” type of heroes– although, frankly, Ghost Rider ditches that theory–, but the concept has sufficient potential for way more heroes. As for this line-up, I have no complaints, and I’d say this is a great reading for anyone willing to explore a more mature vision regarding old-school vintage characters. Could’ve been better, but for what it is, is more than fine.

"Легенди" (чи то "Міфи"/"Міти") - збірка історій становлення основних героїв "Марвел", в яких класичні оріджини перенесли ближче до нашого часу, обернувши в цікавий за стилістикою малюнок, інколи надто різкий і емоційний, а інколи з наслідуванням звичних образів, яким додали об'єму (особливо це помітно по історії Пітера Паркера).

Спочатку найсильнішою оповідкою мені видалася історія про Людей Ікс, бо там і антигерой видатний (Магнето), і сенси, що актуальні завжди: прийняття інших людей та те, чи варто комусь надавати право приймати рішення за тебе, коли йдеться про чуже життя.

Халк трохи простуватий, але виділяється вибуховими емоціями.

Історія Примарного Гонщика занадто стандартна, аби її якось виділяти. Так, там дуже яскравий образ диявола, але одним Люцифером сюжет не витягнеш.

Людина-Павук також зазнав мінімальних виправлень в плані арки становлення, але читати його цікавіше, та й референси там епічні: шоу Конана - це плюс сто до карми.

Історія Фантастичної Четвірки не чіпляє, а от історія Капітана Америки емоційна та зворушлива, навіть не зважаючи на купу штампів та натяки на пропаганду, які тут є лише натяками, частиною образу головного героя.

Результат: четвірка. До українського перекладу не чіпляюся, він є, він адаптує імена персонажів не так, як мені подобається, але це можна перетерпіти. Інколи герої "бляхають", тож чутливим особам, мабуть, не зайде.

I'll admit that I'm a bit of a sucker for these kind of love-letter-to-comics books that come out from time to time. To some people, books that retell origin stories of characters that have been around for ages are redundant. To others, it can be quite satisfying to read a story that fully encapsulates a character's true essence. The modernization of these stories can prove to be more accessible to newer readers as well.

The stories written by Paul Jenkins contained in this book are very well executed and the painted art by Paolo Rivera is gorgeous. The best of the bunch, in my opinion at least, was the Captain America origin. I feel that Jenkins really grasps the core of Cap.

I don't know, maybe this book is for you, and maybe it's not. That's up to you to decide. It certainly served me well.

A fantastic read for both longtime fans and newcomers to comics.

Jenkins takes the original source material for some of Marvel's most famous characters and injects it with a formula that manages to hold on to the warmth and magic that made these characters famous, while ditching the overdrawn and melodramatic exposition that unfortunately doesn't age quite as well in the 21st century.

Rivera meticulously paints out each scene like a renaissance fresco and you can clearly see the patience and love that went into making these characters shine.

They take comic history and produced a volume that is a heartwarming ode and a revitalization all at once.

Якщо вам завжди було цікаво дізнатися про минуле Капітана Америки, Галка, Людини-Павука і решти, причини їх становлення на геройський шлях, як вони набули свої супергеройські здібностей. Бажаєте дізнатися з чого саме все почалося? Цей комікс саме для вас.
Але якщо ж ви давним давно фанат коміксів і все про всіх знаєте, то для вас тут нічого особливого.
Що до вибору ілюстратором Паоло Рівери, то тут все доволі неоднозначно. Під деякі історії, такі як Галк, він чудово підходить, а от для Людей Ікс не дуже.

It's not bad. Its just not good. The dust jacket says it merges the classic stories with the popular movies of recent years. While unnecessary, I expected to read some new and creative origin stories.

Unfortunately, there was little of that. The art is solid, though not groundbreaking, but the stories are the same ones you have heard a thousand times. It isn't that the book is bad, but it doesnt cover any new ground and it advertises just that.

Este tomo posee 6 one shots que reinterpretan los orígenes de los personajes más famosos de Marvel y Ghost Rider (la inclusión de ese personaje aún no me queda clara pero fue una buena adición).
Podrían pensar que los cómics aquí incluidos son actualizaciones de los clásicos donde cambian la ilustración por las hermosas acuarelas de Paolo Rivera, pero no, Paul Jenkins reescribe la historia, no hace grandes modificaciones a los mythos de los personajes pero si las hace más fluidas para la audiencia moderna y utiliza cortes cinematográficos para hacer las historias más dinámicas y vistosas. Un ejemplo claro de las técnicas que Jenkins incorpora es el de Spiderman, la historia es la que hemos visto muchas veces en distintos medios pero la manera en la que la aborda y cómo retrata las escenas importantes del personaje son buenas.
No tenemos nada realmente impresionante ni nuevo, quizá los highlights son la escena de presentación de Magneto que es bastante violenta e intimidante y recuerdo que la primera vez que lo leí hace 7 años me impactó bastante. También me gustó mucho la manera en la que presenta a los 4F, presentándose en un juicio, ese es de los números que más se alejan del original, ya que en el primero los vemos combatir contra el hombre topo y aquí solamente comparecen ante un juicio y vemos una hermosa ilustración casi de una página donde retratan las historias más impresionantes de los personajes.
Los números que se incluyen son Spiderman, X-men, Ghost Rider, 4 fantásticos, Capitán América y Hulk. Los más débiles a mi parecer son hulk y capitán américa. Ahí vemos la historia básicamente como la conocemos sin muchos detalles nuevos y sin cambios narrativos importantes en la manera de presentar la historia, es su número de origen con ilustraciones y diálogos actualizados.
Ghost Rider fue una sorpresa pero una muy grata, el personaje es muy vistoso y Paolo Rivera sólo logra aumentar su atractivo visual a través de sus acuarelas y de cómo retrata al personaje indirectamente en las sombras y reflejos. Aquí también Jenkins aplica la técnica que utiliza en 4F donde nos está contando un suceso actual e intercala con sucesos del pasado. Eso hace la historia dinámica y el hecho de que nos esté contando la historia de Ghost Rider antes de que Johnny Blaze realice un salto increíble en moto, ayuda para aumentar la tensión del número entero.
Creo que este tomo es una buena propuesta de parte de Marvel para presentar a sus personajes icónicos, y Ghost Rider, a las nuevas audiencias y enamorarlos. Me hubiera gustado que esto se volviera una historia de más tomos y retrataran al resto de personajes como Thor, Iron Man, Ant-man, etc.

Al ser un cómic podríamos dividir este libro en dos: el guión y la parte gráfica. En lo que corresponde al guión, el libro en general se queda un poco falto de poder. En lo personal no me gustó que haya modificado las historias de Spiderman, los 4 Fantásticos y de Hulk. Los orígenes de estos personajes son tan conocidos y forman parte tanto de la cultura pop, que hacer una reinterpretación de éstos, más le quita un poco de esencia que aportarles algo nuevo.

Se nota que trataron de actualizar un poco el contexto de los superhéroes como si no hubieran sido creados en los 60's sino en la época actual. Aún así, se quedan un poco cortos. Ahora bien, las historias de los X-Men y de Ghost Rider, podrían ser un capítulo más en las series normales y no tanto una narrativa de sus respectivos orígenes. Éstas sobresalen más aún que las tres mencionadas anteriormente.

Sin embargo, existe una que está muy bien lograda y es la del Capitán América. Aunque la historia resulta 100% pro Estados Unidos (no se puede esperar otra cosa del personaje), tiene en sí una muy buena manera introspectiva de contar el génesis de este héroe.

En cuanto al arte la situación es muy distinta. Resulta por completo un deleite visual. Las ilustraciones recuerdan mucho el estilo de Alex Ross como el de Gil Elvgreen. Los detalles, los colores, las formas. Todo resulta un conjunto bastante atractivo que será una delicia de quien aprecie un buen trabajo de arte a este nivel.

Sin duda será una lectura amena para los que no son tan clavados en las historieras. Puristas, favor de abstenerse.

According to Wikipedia, Cyclops “seems to possess an uncanny sense of trigonometry.” I didn’t know that, but this isn’t the kind of superpower you brag about. “I can shoot energy beams out of my eyes,” sounds more impressive than, “I’m really good at math.”

I decided to look up Cyclops after reading Mythos, a collection of updated origin stories for Marvel’s most popular superheroes like Spider-man and Ghost Rider. You might be asking, “How many times do I need to see Peter Parker getting bit by a radioactive spider?” and you have a point, but these iconic stories provide a great showcase Paolo Rivera’s painted work.

Unlike Alex Ross’s realism, Rivera plays things looser – unafraid to show motion lines or blur his subjects or even reduce them down to primal elements – showing The Hulk as a green blur or Magneto as a crimson silhouette.

Which isn’t to say that Paul Jenkins’ writing is lacking. His take on the X-Men and The Hulk are the stronger entries and anyone could appreciate the poignancy of his Captain America tale – which is one of the greatest Captain America stories ever.

Mythos is the comic equivalent to JJ Abrams' updated "Star Trek" prequel - It's a slick, stunning, and well-packaged introduction to the Marvel universe, updated for modern audiences, and doesn't require any knowledge of Marvel universe history.

It presents all of the relevant plot points necessary to understand the early days or origins of Marvel superheroes such as Spider-Man, Hulk, Captain America, Fantastic Four, X-Men, with respect and nods to the original issues that the story arcs were taken from. Its stunning art, strong dialogue and clever packaging are sure to satisfy die-hard Marvel universe fans as well as newer readers.

I'm definitely adding this to my library's teen graphic novel collection!

The X-Men origin story in particular stood out to me in this volume, but they were all good. Never before have I had my reasons solidified so articulately for being a bigger fan of Magneto than Professor X.

Beautifully rendered re-imagining of the origin stories of several iconic Marvel heroes - Spiderman, Hulk, Ghost Rider, Fantastic Four, X-men, and Captain America. Well worth reading whether you're a long-time fan or new to the world of comics.

In love with these hero's origin stories. I personally am starting off in the world of comics, so it was much appreciated.
The little comedy bits with "We Are Family" and "Ghost Riders in the sky" Were hilarious to me
