I didn't read all of these but, a lot of this is not appropriate for children. Like when Lot offered his daughters to angels and then Lot's daughters got him drunk and had sex with him.
Or when bears ate CHILDREN for making fun of a prophet's bald head.
My grandparents on my mother's side gifted us this wonderful set of books, 'The Bible Story' by Arthur S. Maxwell. Though I don't remember the exact moment they gave them to us, these volumes have been part of our home for as long as I can remember, collecting dust until I began reading them in the 5th grade and was immediately hooked. The engaging storytelling and rich illustrations brought the Bible stories to life in a way that a traditional bible couldn't captivate my young mind. Throughout high school, I found myself returning to these books over and over, reading all volumes more than five times. I remember being scared reading the 10th volume every time (book of Revelations). These books definitely have been a big help in college coz I went to a Catholic based uni on my first 2 years. Aced all my theology subjects :-). I bought a new set for my son on his 6th birthday. He's 10 now and so far he's halfway of volume two :-D
10/09: This is the way to do a Bible, multiple books so that there's time to explore all the stories. However, there are some quirky theological points here. Did Adam & Eve really think salvation would come in their life time? I don't know. And yes, we are awaiting Jesus' return, but he has already defeated Satan. His life, death and resurrection have already fulfilled the prophecy. Am I really awaiting the restoration of Eden or something much better? His explanation of why God prefers Abel's sacrifice to Cain's: He explains it as blood needing to be spilled to expiate for sins. I was taught that Abel offered the "first fruits," the best he had to offer whereas Cain saved the best for himself and offered God the lesser of his crops. Tricky business, this set. It is beautiful and long and slow-paced, a lovely walk through salvation history. But the "guide" is steeped in weird theology in this one.
Loved these books as a child and now reading them to my child. These books do a wonderful job of bringing the Bible to life and making it easier to understand in modern English without compromising the original meaning. Highly recommend!
we have this collection in our home, this books reminds me of my childhood days, i was 4 years old the time my mother bought this bible story book collection. One of my favorite story of the book was the story of Noah and the great flood, i remember when i was 5 years old i used to open this book and i used to read and look at the pictures. the book chapters 1, 2 and 3 are most of my favorite. These books are good for kids. Its a good to have this kind of book in our home.
Read as a young teen, it depicts the stories and parables so clearly that even I, who wasn't religious before, became interested in the Bible and its teachings.
I've completed the 1st 2 volumes. Currently, on business trip so will be continuing volume 3 when i get back. 'The Bible Story' tells the stories of the bible from GEnesis till REvelation. It is very easy to understand and the author writes it in such a way that he relates real life to the stories from the bible. To be honest, i seldom pick up the bible to read, because i find it too dry and too thick. this book is a good start for me, there are illustrations to help you to imagine. THe more i read the More I'm interested to know more about all those different characters from the old testament. This book is good as a foundation before one tackle the real heavy bible. :)
My parents got this, the Holy Bible, Uncle Arthur's Bedtime Stories, the AMA Family Guide and the MW Dictionary so they could get free pans...or something. These books kept me busy.
I grew up with this set. My dad, a holiness pastor, had censored the stories that differed from his own theology: a big X over certain passages with a note that read, "False doctrine."
The story is bullshit propaganda that's been used for millennia to justify hatred, bigotry, genocide, and murder. The illustrations are beautiful, though.
Contains some beautiful illustrations, copies of absolutely stunning paintings. Sometimes the stories contain way too much moralizing. Let the kids figure out the moral by themselves.
