Alta Hensley is a NYT & USA Today bestselling author of dark romance where the villain always gets the happily ever after.

Twisted, clever, and occasionally unhinged, her books deliver morally gray anti-heroes, sharp-tongued heroines, and happily ever afters that taste even sweeter after a little ruin. With a signature blend of grit, wit, and heat, Alta’s stories prove one thing: Villains deserve love too.

Alta lives on the foggy coast of Oregon with her husband, two daughters, and a pair of dogs who think they’re in charge. When she’s not writing redemption for the irredeemable, she’s walking the coastline or sipping craft beer in eccentric little bars that feel like they belong in her books.

descriptionThis is a pretty decent cover. Good representation of the hero. Good composition. Unique and eye-caching title work.description

descriptionThis book was both intriguing and disturbing all wrapped into one. So basically this was right up my alley. It was well written and nicely paced. It had some twists and turns. It had an interesting and unique plot. No OW/OM drama. No angst really. A few hot sex scenes and two likable main characters.

description

That said I did have a few issues that stopped it from being a complete hit. One, I am not sure why the heroine needed such an over the top background? Especially when her history doesn't come into play at all for the entire book. It seemed a bit like overkill. Second, through the whole book, I was waiting for a particular twist to be revealed. Alas, that twist never comes, and I was left feeling like a HUGE opportunity was missed to make this an even MORE twisted book. Lastly, the ending felt rushed, and because the aforementioned thing didn't take place I was left with a bunch of loose ends and things that didn't make sense like

All in all, though I found this one to be an enjoyable read that held my attention throughout. So two thumbs up from yours truly.description

DNF

I like taboo reads as much as the next person, but this was something else entirely. The H's mother's involvement in the romance was creepy and so very off-putting. But I could have lived with it, however, the mother shoving her finger into the h's anus to check for cleanliness, and watching her son receive a blowjob, that's where I draw the line. 🤢

So this is a hard book to rate. I wanted to love this book but it was a little off by the end. I felt the emotions of the female charcter in the begin, I even shed a tear or two for her struggle. Then I was lost a bit with how repetitous some of the story became, it felt like the same thing was being said. Demi and Pope had an interesting journey overall but I wanted more backstory.

NOPE. Just nope.

I did not like. I was disgusted. I felt uncomfortable. I don't get how you can fall for your captive. His mother is the real villain so it is misleading when you think it's gonna be the guy but in fact, it's his motherfucking mum!

The mother wanted her to shave her you know and clean her anus with a douche! Ew. Nope. I just can't.

Never again!

What . . . the . . . f*ck!!!
I guarantee that will be your thought at least one time during reading this book.
I went into this book thinking one thing, and was literally thrown for a loop with a HUGE twist that had the story going a completely different direction than I expected.
Sadly, I can't share any of that twist for you. All I will say is that it may leave you gaping like a fish out of water. At least that's how I felt.

Demi Wayne is the perfect victim.
No family,
Only one friend.
That friend becoming a liability.

Pope Montgomery has a shady past.
All he is looking for is peace in his life.
But he finds something very different with Demi in his life.
A wife in training.

Everything isn't as it seems.
As this is a relatively short book and a standalone, things happen quickly. As a reader, you will have to accept the fiction of this story to enjoy it. There are parts that are hard to believe, but if you are reading for an escape, this book will take you on a wild ride. And I enjoyed every crazy moment!

If you are looking for a crazy, fucked up read, with some serious heat, look no further.

“A girl always dreams of being swept off her feet. I just didn’t picture being swept off my feet into a moving crate , drugged, bound, and gagged. Sorta adds an entire new and twisted element to the dream, don’t you think?”
Such is the Irony in Demi Wayne's life. She's a broken, ashamed girl, who's hiding from her tainted parentage ...trying to just barely survive and sustain. She has no family or friends, or social life for that matter . If she goes missing, nobody would come look for her !!!
She forms a bond with Viv Montgomery , a regular customer at her diner and she's swept away...like literally
Pope Montgomery is a recluse and a Momma's Boy . Hes had a stunted life and is just concerned aboyt the well being of his mom and nothing else.
Demi & Pope are in a Captive Vow to Marry
the story takes a very strange turn.
I can't give much away but the bizarre Vivian really shocks Demi, Pope and Me.!!!
It has WTF moments, Are you kidding me moments and uniquely strange story line.
I'd love to slap Momma, but don't know which one !
And remember… Momma’s watching. Momma’s always watching.

This was a bit of a strange story, the epitome of true fiction. While the cover would suggest that the heroine was being held captive by the hero, that was far from the true.

Two intelligent, level-headed adults, who have never met, are being terrorizes by his mentally lunatic of a mother. In her quest for Demi to become the perfect wife to her son, she has them perform sex acts while Momma’s watching. Momma’s always watching.

It was so ridiculous, for me it was quite entertaining and I had a lot of hilarious LOL moments.

Another DNF in the Taste book.
This one wasn't 'Quite' as bad as the first one. But it was damn near it.
Boring and a very stupid FMC. Everything is done in Her Thoughts. It's so slow you would get more action watching Paint Dry. I swear to all the book Gods. This story SUCKS!

This book wasn't what I was expecting. I liked that there was a twist that made it unlike a typical captive romance however there were points where it was rather weird. I found that I couldn't really connect to the characters and the story wasn't as dark as I thought it would be.

I’m working my way through re-read/cleaning up my kidnapping shelf. I read Captive Vow back in 2018 when it was part of KU. (it’s not anymore, but .99 today) I don’t want to give away major spoilers so I’ll just say that the blurb is misleading, and there’s a twist fairly early in the book. (this is not the typical captive scenario) It’s dark, but IMO is more icky than hot… if that helps. 😊 I originally rated it 1⭐ , but I think that was because I was reading better kidnapping books, and didn’t care for it so I am upping it to ⭐⭐'s, because most of my issue was personal preference, and it did keep my interest.

The rest will have spoilers (I’ll try to keep them vague)

Bottom Line- Not what we typically see in this genre. For me, it was too far-fetched that I read it almost comically so I wouldn’t barf. 😊 Which I don’t think is where I was supposed to go. It started strong but went weird, and I didn’t have enough backstory/development to really FEEL it as believable or connect. I can do weird, but I need to understand it. The book is pretty fast paced, so there’s that.

Captive Vow is a strange dark tale, and I don’t want to give away much.
Demi is a waitress in a small town with only her fellow waitress Maria her only friend. Demi has a terrible secret her mother is being executed after a terrorist explosion had killed innocent people and her mother was responsible. On the day of the execution Demi goes to work as usual and tries unsuccessfully to put it out of her mind. So it with pleasure she goes to help feed an old lady Viv with Parkinson’s to eat.
Demi wakes and finds she is trapped in a box and tied up so she can’t move. When Demi finds out she has been kidnapped by VIV the old lady she has helping for months she finds it unbelievable. Before long they arrive at a beautiful house in the middle nowhere, but Demi has been drugged and placed in the basement and tied to a chair naked. The Viv she meets there is like a totally different woman. Viv threatens her with Maria and her baby, if she won’t do as she’s told it will be Maria who will suffer as she has someone watching them. So Demi must train to be a good wife to her son Pope. Pope is appalled and wants to take Demi home straight away. When the situation is explained he does everything he can keep her save.
Even though the plot is dark, the relationship between Pope and Demi becomes very real, I enjoyed this fast but strange book. The route to a HEA wasn’t a usual but it still a twisted but enthralling read.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review

I've read a few of this authors books and loved them so I was very excited to read this. Nothing prepared me for how good it really was.

Demi is hiding from who she really is, who her parents are. Apart from a workmate she is alone in the world. Little does she know that being kind to the elderly lady Viv will change her life completely. When the worse happens with her mother she doesn't think anything can get any worse that is until she finds herself held captive.

This was a really well written twisted story that had me mumbling at my kindle. I'm so looking forward to reading more from this author.

Captive Vow
By: Alta Hensley
4 Stars

Alta Hensley never fails to add the twist to stories that once finished, you are scratching your head saying…. What did I just read?

Captive Vow is a twisted tale that you find yourself humming Jack and Jill went up the Hill… just to soothe your mind from spinning. With a twist that had me thinking... I really need to improve my southern cooking and be more of a dutiful wife.

Demi is struggling in life. Her upbringing wasn’t one that would be wished upon anyone. Working at a Diner, her days are made when an elderly woman comes in to eat. Assisting her makes Demi feel needed. Her one and only friend Marie works at the diner. Like Demi, Marie has no family either. The two of them make up their own family. Watching out for each other, either one would do whatever it took to protect each other!

Pope is trying…he really is. But how much can he do to protect his mother. How much can he lose; how much can he sacrifice? One thing though, he will do whatever it takes to keep his mother safe to live out the rest of her life. He’s paid the ultimate price already for Momma but will he be able to do what needs to be done now?

Remember, Momma is always watching!!!

**Review of the audiobook**

STORY
In the beginning, I thought I knew exactly where the story was going, so I was knocked off my feet when it took a sharp turn in a completely different direction! The “bad guy” in this story is very unexpected and soooo entertaining! Forced anal douches and kitty checks...

Aside from the insta-love (which I felt happened a bit too quickly to be realistic) and the uber sweet HEA (I kept hoping that at the very end, ), everything about this innovative story was fabulous!!

PERFORMANCE
I listened to the Audible audiobook narrated by Katie McAble. McAble delivered a truly fantastic, believable performance from start to finish. Not only is she a fabulous narrator overall, but she does a hell of a job speaking as male characters, too!

"Remember, Momma’s watching! Momma’s always watching!"
Can we say creepy?

I love the dark and twisted tales by Alta Hensley, but Momma being involved was a bit much for me. I can’t get into details without giving anything away, but you will understand what I mean when you give it a read.

I thought that Demi & Pope were great together, but I felt their relationship was a bit rushed. I also felt that Viv/Vivian's part of the story could have been so much more, but it was cut short.

All in all this was an enjoyable read, which had me turning the pages quickly. So it gets 3.5 stars from me.

Have you ever felt a sense of foreboding when you read a book? This book had it in spades. I just wanted to keep and see how crazy and twisted it could get. I felt bad for Demi but at the same time loved that she had Pope on her side.

The storyline had an Alfred Hitchcock vibe and I loved it more because of it. I couldn't put it down. Every sexual act that Demi had to perform was wrong but oh so right. I've heard of match making but Vivian Montgomery takes to a whole nother level. If you are going to start reading this, go in with an open mind and know mama is always watching.

Title: Captive Vow
Author: Alta Hensley
Genre: Dark, Contemporary Romance
Rating: 5/5

This was the first book I've read by this particular author and what an introduction to her it was, a story of friendship, family, love and loyalty with a whole lot of craziness, animosity and bitterness thrown in.

A great storyline with well developed characters who all have issues from their pasts in common they are sometimes a little crazy "yeah right that's putting it mildly" but it works and there's brilliant banter. If you like your books with plenty of "OOH LA LA" then you will love this as it's hot, kinky and a whole lot of twisted.

I thoroughly enjoyed this and was impressed with Henley's style of writing, if her other work's even half as good as this I just know I'm going to love it.

AND REMEMBER—MOMMA’S WATCHING. MOMMA’S ALWAYS WATCHING.

“Misery meets Bates Motel.” Every now and then, you pick up a book, and you are held hostage by the storyline and characters. Ms. Alta Hensley has done just that in this dark and twisted romantic thriller. The story is edgy, raw, and darkly twisted psychological thriller

Demi Wayne came from a life with convoluted parents and their activist causes. Never having known her father and then for her mother to carry out a heinous crime that killed five innocent souls, where her mama considered it all collateral damage. The price to pay for a bigger and better cause.” “I at least stayed true to myself. True to what your father and I believed in. All I ask is you stay true to yourself, Demi.” What a burden to know and live with the destruction your parents caused, all in the name of a cause. The only good thing in Demi’s life is her co-worker and friend, Maria, and her baby Luis.

Viv Montgomery is an elder lady who comes into the diner Demi and Maria work. She has Parkinson's disease, and shakes so bad she can barely feed herself, and the kind-hearted Demi will take the time to feed and chat with Viv. Viv is so excited for Demi to meet her son, who has been away but is now back.

The story takes on the most twisted plot that makes the Twilight Zone appear normal. Not everyone is as sweet and innocent as they normally appear. “Strong versus weak. Young versus old. Bad versus good.” Waking up in a dark crate, tied and gagged is the beginning of a new nightmare. The reality of the situation is as perverse as the guard holding her hostage. Forced to do procedures to herself, or the threat of harm to her friend will keep not one, but two people prisoner.

The story has kidnap, forced sexual acts, voyeurism, control, and coercion, all while being videoed.

Alta Hensley has written another awesome dark romance with a twist. Captive Vow is this strangely dark romance tale that has many twists and turns. I cant say too much for I would give the plot away. When I was done reading this book, I was like” What just happened?? Did this just happen?”
Demi is struggling in her life. Her life wasn’t the best and she had things happen to her that made her wonder if she was cursed with her lot in life. Working at a Diner, her days are made when an elderly woman comes in to eat. Little does she know that being kind to the elderly lady Viv will change her life completely when she talks to Demi about her “darling son Pope” .
Captive Vow is a dark and strangely twisted ride into the depths of a mother’s warped love and a captive’s forced submission and a son’s love. The plot contained one huge curveball after another and keeps the readers guessing as to how this book can really have a happy ending. In case you are wondering, there is hot sex scenes that will make you need a cool shower when done reading this book. This is one book that kept me on the edge of my seat.

I can honestly say I have NEVER read anything like this story! I am completely traumatized by a little old Asian woman! LOL!!

Vivian takes "I'll do anything for my kids" to a whole new level. This chick is a complete badass! Can anyone stop her? Take a ride, if you dare, on the train to the land of wtf!!!! It's a ride you won't ever forget! Trust!

Be warned! Take the warning seriously! If you're brave enough to enter Vivian's world you're gonna read some things that will definitely traumatize you. Prepare yourself! Whew what a ride!

Four stars!

“I mean, who gets to say that they got kidnapped by a little old Asian lady to become the bride to her son?” I smirked. “That’s horror movie material right there.”

Captive Vow by Alta Hensley is a rollercoaster packed full of twists and turns within the first couple chapters; events you don’t see coming! It’s like whiplash by a book! Considered a Dark Romance due to kidnapping, bondage against will and some questionable events.

Demi Wayne is the spawn of two activists who have murdered for their hearts causes. She works at a diner, only having Marie as her friend and no one else; unless you count a little old lady that comes in a couple times a week to eat her meal. She considers Mrs. Viv Montgomery to be a special customer who suffers from Parkinson’s and Demi and Marie tradeoff helping her eat.

Learning that your mother is set to lethal injection, Demi trudges into work only for Viv Montgomery to spill about her son, Pope Montgomery, to her. Demi is confused as to all this time she has never mentioned him prior. Learning that he was just released from prison she questions if her elderly friend is okay to be with such a man, especially her son. Her day turns worse and she heads home to conquer 2 sleeping pills and chases it with wine. Just when it hits her system, Mrs. Montgomery shows up unannounced… checking in with Demi. Strange?

Demi wakes to find herself in a hard predicament. Thinking that Viv is their to help, only to find out that she is one of two personalities; the other… Vivian, the mother who is determined to have her son marry a well performed/trained lady by her hand. Both persona’s interchange with Demi but she soon realizes that Pope Montgomery has no control and must play the game as well to help Viv, his mother, survive. How far will a mom go to wed off her son?

Both Demi and Pope encounter different obstacles, mainly Demi, dealing with Vivian. She must play by Vivian’s rules or their will be consequences. Talk about “What the heck’s” and “Are you kidding me’s!!” You’ll be wondering “What am I reading?”, but you’ve gotta hand it to Alta and her ability to ensnare you with her creativity! Pope has so much compassion, love, strength and determination (for what he has overcome). While Demi is headstrong and shines light on his darkness. I demolished this story in one sitting! Great quick dark romance.

Wow, what a magnificent dark thriller. I was blown away when I read this that I am still cannot come u with the words to fully express how I feel. My mind went from 0-60 so fast that I lost all reality. All I could do was think of this book. I read so many books by Alta Hensley that I adored but Captive Vow topped it in both my heart and my mind. Captive Vow totally captivated me from start to finish. I found myself so deeply enthralled. Seriously, Captive Vow was the best book ever written by Alta Hensley. I was simply in awe.

Captive Vow was a total mind fuck of a book. Man, my whole brain was going in circles. Alluring. Unconventional. Strange. Unexpected. Captive Vow was a mind blowing dark romance thriller that chilled me to the bone. It was twisted. It was terrifying. It was addictive. It was hot as hell. It was depraved. It was perverse. But I loved every thing about it. I felt the darkness emanating from the pages. I felt the mysterious and sinful pleasure seeping from all the scenes. I was engulfed in it. I was moved by it. I was tangled in its dark and sinister web. Although there was darkness in the book, there was a heart breaking and emotional ripple that really touched my soul. Alta Hensley definitely gave me an intoxicating and fueling dark suspense excellence that hit all the right spots. Even the writing was freaking wicked and superb that I felt I was part of the book. That was the best part. Captive Vow was a book I will forever remember because It was just perfect.

The Characters were just living colour. Seriously, the characters in this book were so unique and differernt. We were introduced to Demi, Pope and Viv/Vivian. Since Captive Vow was written in Demi's POV. I am going to talk about her more. I felt her emotions. I felt her pain. I felt her her as I was the victim. She was strong yet vulnerable. She was a caring but yet she had darkness and brokeness about her that appealed me. I felt her story. I felt her struggles. To find out more about Pope and Viv/Vivian, well you have to read this book. Just wait.

Captive Vow definitely is one of my favourite books of the year. It was simply amazing. You should definitely read this book if you want to be shocked and love some taboo.

Oh my sweet lord... What will I find? I know that coming from this author it will be a masterpiece but that doesn't mean I'm not scared. Lol
As everyone knows, if you don't I'll tell you, Alta Hensley has an intense, simple, breathtaking, sassy and super hot writting that will leave you breathless in a sec.
Every single book that I've read from her put me on edge but I loved every single one.
Captive Vow is her latest release and it tells us Demi, Vivian, Viv and Pope's stories. They all have a past full of darkness, bad decisions and bad people. But sometimes we choose to follow the light or to stay in the darkness. I can't say more about the book because I will not spoil. And let me tell you to get ready. Get ready for a story full of malice, bad people, craziness but also unconditional love, family, friendship and loyalty.
This book is dark but you need to try to reach into the light.
The plot I'm superb and the interaction between the characters despite being crazy sometimes is amazing.
Of course that we are presented with some pretty hot and kinky stuff that you will live and love for sure.
There were parts of this book that I wanted to scream, to hit someone really hard but there were others that I wanted to crawl into the book and hold the characters.
Let's just say that you are about to enter into the biggest and craziest rollercoaster ride of your life.
And now what Alta? What is that brilliant and kinky mind of yours creating? Honestly I don't care because I'll read it for sure. For sure indeed. Lol

Demi Wayne works at Blossom's Diner with her friend Maria. She has befriended a lady named Vivian Montgomery who has Parkinson's and has trouble feeding herself. Demi feels quite alone in the world after incidents involving each of her parents has left her virtually alone.

When Demi is home she finds Vivian has come to see her and soon a whole new side of Vivian comes to light and it is a side that Demi finds extremely frightening. Yet Demi finds herself with an alias in Vivian's son, Pope.

Will the two be able to play Vivian's game before someone gets hurt? Will the situation they find themselves in bring them closer together than they ever thought possible?

This was a super interesting book with many twists and turns that leaves you a lot of "WTF" moments and other moments where you saw hope.

I felt bad for Demi as it was soon evident that Demi was picked by Vivian for a reason and I was shocked at the things that Vivian put Demi through. Yet Demi's heart was huge and she would do whatever was necessary to protect Maria and Luis.

I truly felt bad for Pope as he was stuck between two totally different women who were inside of his mother. He was dedicated to his "mom" but needed to protect Demi. This brought he and Demi so close as they knew they had to follow the rules set out for them.

The situation brought a huge level of trust to Demi and Pope and they had to rely on each other to survive which brought them together on a higher level. It was definitely a dark romance but good!

"Momma's watching, Momma's always watching" Demi Wayne has had a hard life parents that are Demons, Murders, Monsters and she never gave up always trying to find the light of the darkness swallowing her up. Demi is a waitress and always helps a little old lady Viv that comes in to eat now and then. The day of Demi's moms death her life changes. Waking up in a box, bounded tied up and confused, scared out of her mind and Viv is there. Why is Viv there and what is going on? Wow I felt like watching the Misery movie but with so much twist and turns you never knew what was gonna happen next. Some parts I cringed and others I even laughed. A must read for all those who love thrilling books with that touch of darkness. We don't ever upset Momma. 5/5 stars ****Reviewed for Sweet & Spicy Read provided for a voluntarily Advanced Reader Copy of this book ****

A dark twisted taboo version of playing house no one volunteered to play. This story crept into my mind it has me on suspense. Demi is practically isolated due the dark demons that haunt her past. Pope on the other hands turns to isolation as his answer. They are thrown together unwilling but have no choice but to play pretend in a twisted taboo that will have you question. How long can one go before the lines of pretend out of fear and real feelings start to blur? Alta manages to put you on paronoid edge and give you security and love. I felt myself questioning myself did this author pull me into having Stockholm syndrome twisted unconventional love and I would answer yes but she has made me all too willing.
