Rate this book
In the Shadows of Salem, there are no good guys...

For years, Detective Brooke Chandler has been deliberately shielded from the supernatural world. But now that the supernaturals know about her, there's no line they won't cross to harness her powers for their own wicked needs.

To stay alive, Brooke needs to learn what it means to be a Shadow. Unfortunately, the one person willing to help her may be just as guilty of using her unique skills for his own gain as the people she is trying to escape.

Her training comes at a price: helping a fae lord find several dangerous artifacts and shadowing them from his enemies. But the more she uses her abilities, the deeper she becomes embroiled in the cutthroat societies closing in on her. Soon, Brooke finds herself hemmed into a corner, condemned to make an impossible choice that might destroy the human world as she knows it.

I already love this series even more. Just when I thought it couldn't get any better, I am pulled back into this paranormal world of suspense. I would have to say that this book also falls under the category of urban fantasy as well. While this book is suspenseful it has a little less violence than the last book, but that doesn't mean the action stops, the book is still every bit as detailed as you would need it to be, while not overdoing the detail. This book also kind of steps away from paranormal crime mystery, and steps into more things that the fans of this series really would like to find out, at the same time adding a little hunting for gold Metaphorically speaking; instead of being gold it is something much more valuable that leads to a lot more action, and trouble.

In this book we get to find out a little more about Brooke, and part of why she is so powerful. I will warn you; though this book is amazing and has plenty of magic and mayhem having to do with not only Brookes background but also being thrown into the Fae world more than she intended to be, at the end she had some consequences for the selfless things she did leaving the story in a cliffhanger.

I believe I am ready for book three, and am hoping that everything works out for Brooke in the end, because she does everything she does to help others, and she deserves to be happy. I really would also like to see a relationship develop with her and Maddock. Although though it hints through the series that they seem to have feelings for eachother, it doesn't develop just yet, but that is okay, because Brooke has a lot on her plate with being the hero all the time, and trying to make things work.

Shadow Marked is a continuation of The Shadows of Salem series. In this novel, both authors find a wonderfully enticing flow with their words. Readers who have enjoyed reading any of either authors’ work, will be mesmerized by this paranormal fantasy series as well. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have a rare type of magic flowing through your veins? To be the instant talk of the supernatural community? Detective Brooke Chandler has already figured out that life can be pretty tough, getting by in the real world after her transfer to Salem PD—but she is just starting to learn about the supernatural realm that no one knows exists right under their noses. As if vampires weren’t enough, how will Brooke deal with the witch covens, ghost haunts, and fae lords, too?

After the death of Father James and her fiancé, Tom—Brooke Chandler becomes filled with guilt. Her partner, Detective Baxter, was supposedly the brother of Father James—even if it was a ruse, fictitious memories planted to aid the wrong-doings of the evil warlock who was after her magical energy. It doesn’t change the fact that it is now what he believes to have always been true. The hurt in his eyes alone, as he tries endlessly to find evidence that just isn’t there…it eats away at her conscience. With the help of a fae lord, Maddock, Brooke is beginning to understand her powers and use them—the training that has long since been denied to her by her Uncle Oscar as a way of protection after her parents were murdered. She has been given quests to accompany Maddock on occasion to find four powerful artifacts, but she doesn’t quite understand what his intentions are for them yet. With an uninvited guest visiting her apartment, requesting that Brooke now repay her debt, providing the artifacts to her instead—Brooke is at an impasse. As if that is not enough, the local coven—her mother’s coven—has set to blackmailing her to join their coven under pretense of outing her deep dark secret to the world about what really happened to her fiancé and Father James on the night of their death. Can she keep her secrets and appease all parties that want something from her, or will the end come quickly?

Both authors, Walt and Hamilton, have really shown that they can work quite well together. They have formulated a wonderful story line with superb character development and an interesting world. The pace of this novel is fast, making it easy to read; however, there are some spelling and grammatical errors throughout the read. Since this is an advanced reader copy, these may have been cleaned up upon further proofreading, but if not, this should not hinder enjoyment of the novel at all. It is recommended that the first in the series is read prior to reading Shadow Marked, since there are various quips and explanations that would not be understood without previously reading Shadow Born. If you are a reader of paranormal suspense and fantasy, this may be perfect for you.

A copy of this book was provided to Turning Another Page by Rebecca Hamilton, but this in no way affects our honest opinion of the book or the review that has been written. We provide a five-star rating for Shadow Marked by Rebecca Hamilton and Jasmine Walt.

Again in this book there are several TSTL decisions made by Heroine, but story becomes engaging and could not put the book down for the last 25% and OMG was so into it and then BOOM sudden cliffhanger ending. By the end of the story it was compelling reading and made me want to run and read the next book in series...

*** I voluntarily read an Advanced Review Copy of this book. All opinions stated are solely my own and no one else’s. ***
Shadow Marked by Jasmine Walt and Rebecca Hamilton is book 2 in their Shadows of Salem series. Brooke is back and still dealing with the aftermath of dealing with the death (true death) of Tom, the man she once believed to be her fiancé, and the death of Father James, the head of the Onyx cult who was trying to kill her for her powers. Her partner is still trying to figure out what happened to the man who believes was his brother but Brooke has her own problems besides the guilt she feels behind the pain her partner is experiencing. She’s still dealing with the Fae lord Maddock Tremaine. He’s helping her deal with her powers and teaching her a few things but now he needs her help gather four artifacts because her shadowing powers will come in very useful. What Brooke doesn’t expect is for the Moorigan to come calling and call in her favor debt by calling on Brooke to hand over the artifacts once she has all of them or else the Moorigan will go after her Uncle in Chicago. But the problems don’t stop coming for Brooke. The Captain is after her too, because he was part of the coven that Brooke took down with help from Maddock and now he wants her help getting into the coven that has reached out to Brooke or else he’ll leave evidence to point her fellow detectives to her as the culprit. Things are piling up for Brooke but will she be able to survive all of this or will something have to give?
Right when you pick this book up you pick right up where you left off from book 1. Brooke is dealing with the guilt of what happened with Father James, despite the fact that she was only trying to defend herself and save her own life. But there really is no way to explain that to her partner because without sufficient evidence…or them just BEING there…no will really believe her. But as you read along you quickly come to realize that Brooke has more problems than she knows what to do with. From the Captain trying to set her up, Baxter not trusting her much, Maddock wanting her help and putting her in danger, the Moorigan calling in her favor and the local coven wanting to draw her in Brooke has more than enough on her plate to be dealing with. The bad thing is is that she’s not willing to trust Maddock and to bring him in on her problems until it’s a little late.
This book immediately engages you from the beginning and makes you want to know more and more with each page as you wonder…is she going to be okay? Will she survive this encounter? Brooke is an interesting character but definitely flawed which just adds to her. Most people would reach out for help when trouble comes knocking but she more often than not tries to handle it on her own which typically….especially when dealing with those who deal with magic…is a bad thing. You’d think she’d learn after previous encounters but I guess it’s easy to say that she’s stubborn. But nonetheless I absolutely love her because she is so awesome.
If you liked, loved or just couldn’t get enough of Brooke Chandler in her first book then you will be very happy with this book…despite the cliff hanger at the end. ;-) But hey! It will leave you wanting more! This is a really good book and I thoroughly enjoyed it very much. I give this book 5 out of 5 stars and two thumbs way up! Great job to the authors and I cannot wait to read more!

When trouble starts,it never seems to end. Detective Brooke Chandler gets her deal to understand it pretty clearly- everyone wants to use her or blackmail her, and she grows tired and angry about it. Witch covens, vampires, fae lords and the goddess called the Morrigan engage Brooke's mind well enough, but coupled with Maddock's treasure hunt and human job as a cop only escalate the pressure on her. Balancing between the world of humans and supernaturals is exhausting, but she eventually learns about some of her abilities and skills she did not know she possessed.
After reading Shadow Born, I fell in love with this unique supernatural world full of secrets and mysteries, adventurous battles and dangerous threats from every direction. Brooke has no one to truly trust and her feelings for Maddock only raise more confusion in her already confused mind. Maddock's unpredictability and usual poker face hiding all emotions build the right tension in the plot and together with so much happening, the book is anaddictive page turner. I love the characters, love the storyline, even love Maddock's weird accent. I am lost to this world and sometimes don't want to wake up into reality. Awesome read, and I praise the author for giving me the chance to read an ARC.

“Between the rock and a hard place” that seemed to be Brooke Chandle’s new motto. Detective Guy Baxter was suspecting somehow Chandle had to do with his brother’s death, a new coven wanted to get their paws on her, the Morrigan was lurking and blackmailing her, her boss behavior was weird and suspicious and in top of all that Maddock was making things harder for her. In whom she could trust? Learning how to use her powers was a must because she felt alone and in need to protect herself from everyone. Too much lies, betrayals and lack of communication to trust. Everything seemed to be falling apart around her but still something much worse was waiting to attack. Intense, very suspenseful and intriguing second book. Full of twists, action, scenes that left me guessing and thinking about the possible outcomes, feeling angry by Chandler’s bad decisions, intriguing by Maddock ambivalence but above all the end left me flabbergasted. Loved this book and hope the author is currently finishing the third one.

Another fabulous outing from this pair of authors. I really loved the first book and this second in the series lives up to the feel of it. I was curious where the story was going to go. Brooke has to turn to Maddox but she feels very limited and wants to get to know others in her new supernatural community, unfortunately for her that doesn't always turn out as she would have hoped! It seems there is a complex world lurking beneath the surface in Salem and Brooke finds herself completely caught up in the middle of it. Despite Maddox being a totally hot and powerful being I did get annoyed with I'm at times but I do hope that these two will learn to trust each other. I also felt very sorry for the way Brooke has had to have the lies in her everyday life woven around her and this gets in her in a few messes. All in all though I loved the progression of character and story in this book and am eagerly awaiting the next.

This is the second book in the Shadows of Salem series and is definitely the point where Brooke realises that all the supernatural races that she has been exposed to so far, want to have control over her. Her powers as a Shadow are growing with the help of Maddock Tremaine and they embark on a mission to find four Fae artifacts that he needs to protect his lands and all the people living within his borders.

Brooke has a lot of questions, most of which fall on deaf ears..... Her frustration builds and her patience is definitely running thin with Maddock and his hot and cold behaviour towards her. The Morrigan makes herself known and new enemies come to light to complicate matters for her.

I had no issues with the pacing and I found this as entertaining as the first book!

I did receive this as an ARC however I have purchased my own copy as well.

Another great read from these authors. I love this series so far. If you like J.R. Ward, you will like this. There's just something about it that reminds me of her. Anyway, there's great world building and I love the characters. Even the ones I love to hate. Lol. Brooke is such a great character. I'm not quite sure yet how I feel about Maddock. I like him but sometimes I feel uneasy about him. I'm curious to see where this series goes and how many books there will be. It's full of possibilities.

Good stuff

Still loving the books so far! Our main character really can't seem to catch any breaks in this second book of the series and boy does it have me biting my nails!
This installment has Brooke finding 4 artifacts for Tremaine all while trying to dodge questions about the dead and missing people, witches who demand she join their coven, the Morrigan, as well as still trying to learn her magics. It's a fast paced book with plenty of action and some sexual intrigue (no sex yet, bummer). Im ready for the next one!

Good read

Well the first book was good but the second book was a fantastic read. So much so I couldn't put it down. When you thought you knew what was happening something would be thrown into the mix to change it all around. I have given it four stars because I couldn't put it down. A good read for any fantasy fae lovers.

Good read for a rainy afternoon

While I like the characters, there isn't enough development, things are just crammed one on top of another. I want to be ble to see the people, the places, etc... it's sort of like playing with paper dolls,it's fun in the moment but no substance...

WOW!!! Shadow Marked is the second book in the Shadows of Salem series. I really enjoyed Shadow Born and couldn't wait to read this one and it did not disappoint me. This could be read as a standalone but I suggest you read Shadow Born first. It will help you understand this second book and the storyline and characters. There is a huge cliffhanger at the end of Shadow Marked and it's clearly not the end of the story. There is violence.

The book blurb adequately describes the storyline so I'm not going to repeat that all of that info here. The author did a good job of giving a quick recap of Shadow Born for new readers. The characters are multi-dimensional and well written. There are a lot of clues in the storyline that keep you guessing what twists and turns will be revealed next and they keep coming all the way to the cliffhanger ending. Enough to keep me riveted just to see how it ended. As usual not everything, or everyone, are as they appear.

I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series and can't wait for it to be released! I want to see what else Brooke discovers about herself, her background, and the supernatural world. As well as seeing more of Maddock Tremaine. Can she escape from wherever she ended up? I hope the next book comes out soon!

***I would like to thank Rebecca Hamilton for providing me with “Shadow Marked” for free, for my honest review***

I felt that throughout the story that Brooke was given the short end of the deal at every turn. By the end of the book I was thinking fae and witches were no better than the no good Tom. But I did learn something towards the end of the book that help me understand a certain faerie lord better. But I bet most won't catch it. *grins wickedly* I am not telling you what it is you will need to read it to find out.

Yes it is like Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake series. We have a kick butt woman that everyone wants a piece of her or to use her for their gain. Plus there’s this guy offering to help her. However, not being forthcoming until she gets pushed too far and demands answers. Jasmine and Rebecca weave their tale with a picturesque clarity that I truly enjoy. I love how I am transported into their world and don't want to leave. The ending is a cliff hanger and I need more now! But I will wait as best as I can…

I think I really like this series. This is also probably not the last book or series from either Jasmine Walt or Rebecca Hamilton I'm reading. I like the world they've created and the writing just sucks you right into the story. It's also not only good when it comes to the action, but it also has the power to just frustrate me with what's happening. Which on one hand, makes my stomach upset, but on the other, makes the book captivating. So that's another plus for the authors.

Also, thanks to the fact that I didn't have problem with just how little Brooke mourns her dead fiancé, which seemed really weird to me in the first one, I think I enjoyed the second installment a little bit more. I got the authors' motivation then, but really, if a character mourns, it should be obvious. And, the aftermath of what happened in the first book and how it affected Brooke seemed to me a little better handled here, so in my eyes, they've redeemed themselves a little.

Plus, Maddock. No need to say more.

I loved book 1 but sadly book 2 just wasn’t as good.
It seemed like everyone was try to blackmail our female protagonist making her seem week when really she’s the opposite.

Then getting blamed for her bosses disappearance really could the all mighty fae lord not clean up his mess before taking him away for punishment? Like wipe minds like that evil warlock did or convince a dark fae to impersonate him so people could see him then he skipped town of his own free well? Something? Anything?

She did try to fight back a little when everyone was out to get her but her distrust of the fae lord I think was her downfall they needed better communication!

And come on I thought in book 1 there relationship was going somewhere but nope book two was very transactional.

Then at the end he had felt betrayed by her and again just like when she stole his powers 400 years ago so he left (I think he has trust issues and doesn’t open up easily)

But this book ended in a cliffhanger as one of the people blackmailing her was not happy she didn’t get what she wanted.

I had a rough start with this series' first book (yes I consider 4 stars a rough start with this author) but after I finished this, wow... It's been a while since I've wanted to click for the next book in a heartbeat lol!

Chandler is getting used to the paranormal world she was tossed into in the last book. She's somewhat got a hint on her allies, but her enemies seem endless, and even more mysterious than the last. I loved seeing her struggle to stay one step ahead of the people constantly backmailing and hassling her. The fae and witches and others are always cool to read about, but that with Detective Chandler's active lifestyle of not dying and Maddock- ah, Maddock -made for a seriously entertaining read. Loved the chemistry between them, the should and should not debates. It's a high recommend for people who love paranormal they-kiss-really-good books with writing that makes you forget you're reading.

SPOILER alert ..

If you are enjoying the series. Have book 3 ready when reading this one.

This one truly a mixed bag.
Brooke, is seeming to have trouble come at her from all sides.
Human and supernatural.

The good .. We start to learn more of her past. Where Brooke came from.
As well as relations she has forgotten.
Revelations start coming, her ties to Fae kingdoms.
More between her and the mysterious Fae lord.
Helping to train her. While making her help him. Find and steal magical artifacts.
From various supernaturals or factions.
Each with a danger all their own.

Brooke learns more about her abilities and powers along he way.
Yet by the finish. A LOT is unresolved.
Brooke left in peril, from multiple enemies.
A solid cliff hanger ending.

That leads you into book 3 of the series.

The pacing seems to be better this chapter as well.
It's just the fact after you get all the way through it.
A lot is not wrapped up.
Why the lower star rating.

Brooke Chandler is in training to learn what it means to be a Shadow. Her training comes at a price: a fae lord (Maddock Tremaine) find several dangerous artifacts and shadowing them from his enemies.

Brooke finds herself juggling her secrets to keep them safe from her partner, Guy Baxter; Maddock Tremaine - fae lord trainer & possible love interest; the Morrigan - ancient goddess; a coven of witches; and last but not least Captain Randall.

There is plenty of action in this 2nd installment. Brooke & Maddock set out to find 4 artifacts.
They are each found in differing supernaturals domains, each with it's own set of challenges. With each search, acquire and shadow - Brooke begins to find more control of her powers and even discovers a few new ones.

The romance element between Brooke and Maddock is definitely on the back burner - in fact Brooke goes from attraction to revulsion regarding Maddock through out the story. She goes out of her way to keep secrets from everyone, in an effort to protect herself. As always though - secrets tend to bite back.

And Wow! the ending was.... well... let's just say I'm on the edge of my seat waiting for the next installment....

Really enjoyed listening to the Audible version during my commute. Angela Dawes is one of the better narrators I've heard.
If you read (or listened) to the first book in this series, you'll want to continue! Brooke Chandler's life just keeps getting more and more interesting as she continues to discover more clues about her parents and explores her unique abilities. The quest for the artifacts and Brooke's exploration of the supernatural underworld of Salem made for fun reading, and I enjoyed the banter between Brooke and Maddock. The story ended on one heck of a cliffhanger, though.

Unexpected twists keep the suspense going

There is some frustration with the lack of continuity in how the main character communicates with others. This is offset by things not going as the reader predicts. It keeps your interest.
