Everyone is sound asleep, but when Popov starts snoring, the others wake up. Nono wants a story, Zaza wants to switch beds, Kipp wants a drink of water....Will anyone sleep tonight?
Originally published in New Zealand, this adorable book features several animals who are trying to get a good night's sleep. As they lie in their bunk beds, they find it hard to do so because of the loud snoring of Popov. After much musical chairs with their beds and a need for water, some company, and even a bedtime story, everyone finally falls fast asleep in Misha's top bunk. Popov wakes up, fully rested, and puzzled as to everyone's whereabouts. Youngsters will easily recognize the annoying experience of having a good night's sleep interrupted by loud snoring especially when the snorer sleeps on, oblivious to his/her noises. The book is subtly amusing and fun to read since there are many things going on in those illustrations.
Eight dogs are asleep in bunk beds until Popov starts snoring. Two of the dogs wake up and turn on their lights. They agree that Misha will read a story. Steadily, one dog after another awakens and soon they all have things they need to do. One needs a toy, another a drink of water, another wants to switch beds. In the end, everyone but Popov makes their way up to Misha's bed for a story and fall asleep together. Then it is Popov's turn to wake up. Cleverly done, the thin and tall format works particularly well with the subject matter, offering a perspective just right for very tall bunk beds. The timing is also nicely done with each page turn showing a new dog waking up. The ending too is satisfying with just the right amount of gentle humor. A great bedtime (or morning) pick.
Pre-schoolers and parents will smile when they read this comical board book. It showcases the familiar bedtime antics of young ones trying to settle down to sleep.
The elongated shape of the book is perfect for the bunkroom setting for the story. There are two tiers of four bunks in the room, reminiscent of a school camp. The characters sharing the room are dogs of various breeds, shapes, and sizes.
Seven shadowy shapes are snuggled under the covers while snores float from one bed. It looks a peaceful scene, except for the wide-open eyes of the occupant in the bed above the snorer. Eventually, the non-sleeper turns on his bed light and calls out to his friend in the opposite bunk. This starts a humorous chain reaction.
With each turn of the page, another dog stirs and flicks on the bed light. Soon the bunkroom is alive with activity as the occupants get glasses of water, borrow a toy, change beds, climb up and down ladders, and share a story. Meanwhile, the snorer is oblivious to the bustle going on around him.
The author/illustrator makes clever use of bold colour to lighten the night-time scenes. Each character’s personality is defined clearly through their appealing faces and body shapes. Readers will enjoy the background changes - especially the snorer’s restless tossing and turning.
Another splendid book from the innovative New Zealand publisher, Gecko Press.
So there’s a whole bunch of doggies in these BIG bunk beds, except ONE of those doggies SNORES and so the other ones just can NOT get to sleep. So they do the best thing: they all sneak up to that one dog whose bunk’s at the very top so they can all read a book together!! And then they all fall asleep but then guess who wakes up? The dog who was snoring! Go figure! This is another one of those ones that looks like it’s a baby book [board book] but it’s just too good for babies! I love those doggies’ bunk beds except how can you sleep that high up? That must be ONE big room! This is a FUN one!!
This story is cute and funny. There are two 4-bed bunk beds in a room, and no one can sleep except Popov, who is snoring away. The other animals ask each other for help and move around as they whisper in the dark. When Popov wakes up well rested in the morning, he wonders where everyone is. He finds them all asleep in one of the top most bunks where Misha has read them all a story. This book introduces the concept of speech bubbles, and kids will enjoy tracking the animals' movements around the room.
Is this a series? I hope this is a series. I want more stories about these doggies.
This is a perfect board book for Very Little Ones. They can try to learn the names of the dogs and remember them from page to page. They can talk about why the dogs are moving around. They can guess who the next to wake up will be. This book is so simple, and yet SO full of character moments and plot points in such a tiny package. It's a great discussion starter for very early readers.
Read to some kids as part of work. Cute ish for kids maybe but not for me. The humor and irony of the loud snorer waking up and everyone else being asleep is humorous but its so short and has so little depth as a kids' book IMO.

When Poprov starts snoring, the other cats and dogs can't sleep or soon are awake. When they ever get to sleep in this vertical format board book for preschoolers?
