Rate this book
Moving on after a tragedy can be impossible – especially when
you’ve been dealing with them for over two years. But it’s her senior year, and Harley Anderson is more than ready to do just that, even though the skeletons in her closet can’t exactly be hidden.

Enter Mason Daniel, the egotistical, sexy, surfer boy from
California – a boy with his own hidden demons, and an even bigger secret agenda.

Mason isn’t right for Harley. He knows this better than anyone.
He’s the epitome of a runner – a guy who takes what he can get,
only to split a short while later. But he can’t deny the emotions that Harley brings out of him, so he’s going to break his rules for once.

He should have known what it would lead to…

Two kindred souls – both lost and then found. Will they fail, once again, in their search for contentment and
happiness, or will they finally find true love, when it’s least expected?

(This is a MATURE young adult book, NOT a new adult book. Recommended for 17+ due to some sexual situations, mature circumstances, and language.)

This book was pure amazeballs, with awesomesauce on the side - can a dish get any better than that? Not in my world it doesn't.

I kid you not. This book had the goods. It took me on a huge journey with lots of twists, turns, heartache and heartbreak. It introduced me to characters that I fell in love with instantaneously & families that I truly wanted to be part of.

As I was reading & we got an answer I was like, 'oh no, well that wasn't good but not as bad as I was dreading.' Thinking that was the reveal. Every.single.time. Seriously? Nope, Van Fleet dangled a box of praline chocolates on the end of the string all the way through - just allowing me a nibble gradually. I didn't feel like I was in suspense and dreading big moments, that's how well it was done. Subtly. So much so that I already thought I knew it all. Til.I.Just.Didn't.

“I can do this. He’s just a boy.”
A very hot boy who you can’t stop dreaming about, but hey, who cares, right?

Just my damn luck, a smart boy and a hot boy, all wrapped up into one, perfect ... never mind.
~ Harley's internal dialogue

The descriptions throughout...wow. Just wow. I felt it all. I felt the loss, the sadness and desolation, the guilt, the insecurity, confusion and of course joy. I felt pride, anticipation and excitement. A full day later and I'm still recovering from the wickedly wild ride that I never wanted to get off.

“I’m thinking about us, Harley. I’m thinking about kissing you. I’m thinking about touching every inch of your body. I thinking about making you mine. Is that what you were hoping to hear? Because I’ll tell you what, ever since I God damn met you, all I do is fantasize about you. From the time I wake up until the time I go to bed, you’re in my damn head, little beast, consuming my every waking thought, consuming my body and dreams at night. It’s freaking torture to feel like this, you know, as if your world is constantly on the verge of cracking and you’re always hanging on for dear life, praying to freaking God that he doesn’t let you fall. That right there, little beast, is what I’m thinking about.”

Mason & Harley (aka Little Beast) are one of those couples I feel confident in saying are without a doubt made for each other. There wasn't a moment that I didn't get their connection, not a second where I didn't want them to let down their walls. They are the balance that ying is to yang and they bring out the very best (and of course with true love, the worst). They make each other smile and hope for things they never even imagined would be theirs. They made me laugh, hysterically at times (the strong willed, stubborn, sarcastic, feisty, and that I-hate-you-so-badly-that-I-could-possibly-love-you attitude, and @ Harleys mom. PMSL! 'Its a dress. Not a grandchild.' Hahahahahahaha)

“I didn’t mean it like that. It came out the wrong way. I’m not perfect, I’m a guy. I pee on the floor, and leave the toilet seat up. I throw my dirty socks on the couch and lose them in the cushions. I leave old plates of food in my room and don’t remember they’re there until they start to rot and smell! What do you expect? What does she expect?”

and sob into my pillow at others ( Really! Wahhhhhhhhhh).

YOU, Harley Ann, are my beast.
My perfect wave, my high, my one, true love.

Roller coaster anyone? The secondary characters in David, Abigail, Maisy and the parents had just as many precious, laugh out loud, and touching moments that Mase and Har had and really did compliment the book at every.single.stage.

I URGE you to pick up this debut from Ms Van Fleet. It had all the very best ingredients and was absolutely executed in the most perfect way. I would recommend it to everyone I know. Kudos to the author, another that's catapulted up my favorites ladder...

PS. I wouldn't be adverse to more on Abs & David. Just sayin' <3

When It's Least Expected is a powerful story of forgiveness, healing and love. There is so much character development and emotion in this book that all the characters--even the secondary characters--come to life on the page. You get to know them so well that they become your friends and you want to spend all your time with them. They had me snorting with laughter, weeping with them and longing for more of their intense chemistry.

From the beginning, the story reaches through the page and grabs you with the mystery around Harley (the heroine's) past. The author does a fantastic job of giving little teaser pieces of information to keep you turning the page--eager for more. Harley is kind, sassy and one of the most selfless heroines I've ever read. She has a way of trying to work out other people's problems as a way of not dealing with her own. I loved that because it was true to life and made for a great character arc.

Mason (the hero) is a yummy surfer boy with an I'm-better-than-a-warm-croissant attitude, which might be a turn off if you didn't know that that persona is totally just an act. He's actually very kind and tender and wounded. (I have a thing for wounded heroes!) Also, the relationship between Mason and his younger sister feels heart-felt and natural. I found myself looking forward to their sibling squabbles.

Harley knew she shouldn't allow herself to get caught up in Mason's sexy eyes and adorable pet name--he calls her little beast, which I adored soo soo much (and you'll find out at the end why he calls her that *swoons*)!!--but they're absolutely perfect for one another. They can't see it to begin with, but you as the reader know: these two people HAVE TO BE TOGETHER because they are like peanut butter to chocolate. Their relationship from the first look to the oh-so-hot-give-me-more-sexy action totally hooked me.

My normal go-to reads usually have paranormal elements, and When It's Least Expected is straight contemporary; but I am so glad that I read it! This is a mature young adult read that you should definitely buy. Can't wait for more from Heather Van Fleet!! Awesome debut!!

Some of my fave lines:

Pigs could fly, and cows could jump over the moon, but David would still be there...moping his life away.

Any town that sold eggs on the side of the road was bound to be shitty.

(My fave fave!!) Harley hated Mondays, even more than she hated death.

He was dying to hear her talk again; the sound of her voice was a soon to be addiction, he was sure of it.

Then she screamed, curling her toes, squealing like a helpless banshee.

Her touch was like fire to his ice cold skin, and he was okay with the idea of burning to death, as long as she was the flame.

He was out for blood with those kisses, and she tilted her chin back, ready to serve up a vein.

"I’m like the cheese to your taco, girl. You’d never feel complete unless I was right in the center of your shell!”

“I don’t care where we are, or who we’re with, little beast. You. Are. Always. Mine, and if I wanna talk dirty to you, then I will...”

Review of When It’s Least Expected (Perfect Timing #1) by Heather Van Fleet

Review done for Hooked on Books & CherryOBlossoms Promotions

4 out of 5 stars

Harley Anderson has had to deal with more tragedy than any teenager should have to. Her boyfriend committed suicide and her twin brother lost his leg in a car accident on the way to pick her up from a party. She can’t handle putting her heart on the line any more.

When a gorgeous, surfer named Mason Daniel comes to town, Harley is having a hard time resisting his charm. Mason has demons of his own and is also determined not to get attached to anyone.

The harder they fight the pull between them, the harder it is to stay away from each other. Harley and Mason both have to learn to forgive themselves for things that were out of control before they can be free to love each other.

I thought this was a really great teen romance story. The book flowed really well, and the characters were really great. The situations that they had to deal with were things that could happen to anyone in real life.

I definitely recommend this book to read.

2.5 "Walk Away Joe" Stars

This was just an okay story for me. There were spelling and grammar issues; luckily not a lot but enough that you notice. Also, I wasn't a fan of many, many thoughts the characters had in between actual sentences being said.

Mason had issues. Harley had issues. Okay fine, everyone seemed to have issues and played the blame game. Some coped with anxiety and pills and some coped by running away and not getting too close.

At one point, they had to walk away and find themselves before they could truly be together and be happy as a whole.

Although, I thought Mason was a chicken about how he walked away. I almost didn't want Harley to go back and forgive him for leaving in a bad time of her life.

In the end, they had to do what they felt was best and work it out their own way so they could have their happily ever after.

Speaking of happily ever after... I liked how the author gave them theirs. Not the typical way as most books, in my opinion.

Have you read a book that you literally held your breath because you didn’t have a clue how it was going to work out between the hero and heroine? Yes, When It’s Least Expected is that book and I don’t think I’m really breathing now. My heart is still racing. My pulse is still erratic, too.

Ms. Van Fleet has not only written brilliant YA novel but it’s also her debut. I’m in awe of her now. She managed not to make the characters angsty or stupid. Harley and Mason were real characters. Teenagers with real deep-rooted problems stemming from personal tragedies that defined who they were as a person. She also tackled subject matter that wasn’t that easy to read either. Teenage suicide, the death of parent, teenage drinking and the consequences, depression, severe anxiety attacks, and a sibling that is in a wheelchair. See what I mean? Lots going on but then there’s not. Ms. Van Fleet manages to make it realistic and not sappy or even worse a plot device. Harley and Mason are wounded but they are still good people. Their problems are more internalized than they realize.

I felt immediately connected with Harley and Mason, too. They are easy characters to know and to love. I’m going to go in and tell you what their problems are because that’s part of the novel and I would be “spoiling” it for you but I will give you this tidbit…Harley’s twin brother is part of her problem. She feels extreme guilt over his losing part of his leg. Yep, its bad but how Ms. Van Fleet deals with the aftermath is both touching and heartfelt in the end.

I’m really not sure how to end this review. I’m really at a loss for words. Shocking, I know. Its one of those novels that you want to talk about but if you start talking about all the little things that are going on in the book, it spoils it for other people. Don’t except a lot of sex either. Yes, it’s there but its closed-door. Okay…Harley does kinda freak out when she finds out how many Mason has slept with in his young life and its a hoot.

I will say this…don’t expect to read about the mean girls, the class bully (even though there is a creepy guy but Harley takes care of it :) ) or parents that don’t care and understand their kids. They do but in different ways. Plus, their friends play a large part in their growing up process and helping one another figure out if this is truly love or not. Abigail is a hoot with Harley but her claws do come out when needed. Just wish that David… Oops almost a spoiler but waiting on bated breath for that story. :)

All in all, this is one hell of a GREAT book. Characters that are realistic with problems that have no easy fixes. Both needed time apart from each other to found out if they truly belonged together and WHY the belonged together. *sigh*

Again, I’m still in the fetal position but the breathing thing has leveled off.

If she could just turn back the time, she wished it were her rather than him. He has a bright future ahead of him, not that she doesn't. But his depression and not wanting to go on with life breaks her heart.

Everything just seems to be what it is for the past year until Mason Daniel strutted in her life. He was arrogant, cocky, an ass - and simply hot! Just when she thought she could be immune to his charms, or she wasn't ready to fall in love - her heart simply won't listen. Because Mason, this new guy in town has a great, sweet side in him that would make you swoon, head-over hills in love with him. But will Harley be enough to make him stay?

It was the ultimate roller coaster ride - there were a lot of mistrust and miscommunication between the two but Mason and Harley truly compliment each other. They are those types of couples, whom you know at first glance were simply made for each other. They can argue (since she was the queen of arguments) like hell, and still bring out the best in each other.

Ms Van Fleet wrote an amazing debut -it is something you would want to read on a rainy day. You'd be glued to it in no time. She had me smile, laugh and cry. Characters are pretty much amazing, from the main characters down to the mother (whom made me laugh real hard - she's pretty wicked!) .I couldn't ask for more.

This book blew away any preconceived ideas I may have had of a romance story out the window!

By 40% in we knew the 2 main characters secrets, they had told each other and discussed them. This usually doesn’t happen until about 80%.

Just when you thought you knew what was going to happen, Heather Van Fleet expertly leads the characters down another path.

It was a very emotional book of two tortured souls who were still only in their late teens, but who were so obviously meant to be together.

Be prepared to have a box of tissues to hand as you follow the lives of Mason and Harley. I stayed up until 2 o’clock to finish this book and had tears dripping off my face. The only books I’ve read which stirred my emotions to this level are Forever Black and Forever You by Sandi Lynn.

Heather Van Fleets style of writing is very empathetic to her characters. She leads the reader on a rollercoaster of emotions.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will definitely be adding more of Van Fleets books to be “to be read” list.

I would give this book 5 stars as it deals with some important issues and also because I couldn’t put the book down. I NEEDED to know what happened to Mason and Harley and whether they got their own HEA or not!

Enjoy!

First and for most a BIG Thank You to Miss Heather Van Fleet for my beautiful autographed copy of this book.
It was a bit hard for me to get into the story, but the longer I read the more it made sense to me, why the book started the way it did. The more I continue to read the more I was mesmerized with the story and its characters. Once I understood where the story was going, I was TOTALLY hooked. I couldn't put the book down, I just had to find out what happens to the characters and their story. Needless to say I ABSOLUTELY LOVED this book. Can't wait to read more from Miss Heather Van Fleet. Again and again, Thank you so much I truely enjoyed this book and totally recommend this book to anybody and everyone who like a good love story.

I didn’t hate or love this book. I liked the characters. They were kind, nice and caring. They love their family and would do anything for them. But Harley and Mason were too much hot and cold. One moment they were in love and the next they were snapping at each other. They also didn’t have much faith in each other and had stupid fights. I loved the second part of this book much more than the first part.

Emotional, sweet YA with a great team of characters. Harley and Mason have their issues. I enjoyed that they deal with their problems on their own, relying on their own strengths, but learn to love each other along the way. Harley is a strong willed yet emotional heroine, which is a nice combination. I can't wait to read Book 2 about David and Abigail. I also hope Maisy gets a book.

ebook obtained in exchange for an honest review - this review is my HONEST opinion

This was such a cute, emotional read... yes, those two words "cute" and "emotional" seem like they should never be used in the same sentence. But that's how I felt when reading.

I say "cute" because you have absolutely precious characters fumbling through a relationship. But it's definitely emotional because they're both extremely damaged individuals. I sighed, giggled, cringed, teared up, smiled, got angry.... all throughout this novel.

Harley is a great character - she seems fun but she's also dealing with dark internal struggles because the guilt over her brother losing his leg in an accident eats her up inside. That's not all though - throw in the ex who ended his life... and you've got an emotional mess. She struggles on a day to day basis with anxiety and everything that comes along with it.

Mason, again, is a great character. I loved this boy. He was my absolutely favorite piece to the entire novel. I love reading from his POV. He's like Harley - fun guy but constantly deals with the fact that he harbors so much guilt over his father's death. He has a rocky relationship with his mom but his rock seems to be his little sister Maisy. That girlie could have her own novel - she's such a stinking cutie pie but, again, is stuck in the middle of her mom's mood swings, her brother's guilt trip, and then the mean girls at school who act like skanks. Maisy & Mason are forced to move with their mom away from the sandy beaches and waves of the Cali coast over to... Nebraska... Now I live in the country. There's a cow pasture right across the road from me and a field behind me. Trust me when I say that moving from the beach to the country - well that would really bite... LoL

All of these characters seem like they grew up too fast emotionally. It makes me sad that they had to deal with such dark issues so early in life when they should've been focused on having fun and living life as teens.

Mason's attraction to Harley makes me smile. From the instant he saw her rear digging around under the bleachers for her key ring, he's hooked. He wants to know more about her... but that feeling throws him off guard because, well, he's Mason! He doesn't DO the girlfriend thing. Ha.

So, the characters, if you haven't noticed already by my constant chatter, are great. Loved them.

The plot moves pretty smoothly. There were a few places that were a tiny bit slow but nothing major. I like the plot sequence & I adored how Harley ended up making the jump towards the end of the novel. The Epilogue = priceless. I'm so glad that Heather added that part!! Love it!

The copy that I have, I think, is an ARC so there are several places where the editing could use some improvements - but again, I think that it's because it's an advanced copy. That's to be expected so definitely not a negative tidbit as far as the novel goes.

Alrighty... so overall... I'd definitely give this novel a 4 star rating because it was really a great read. I was attached to the characters, I enjoyed the plot, I liked the outcome. If this was a series (I know it's Perfect Timing #1 - but I don't know if #2 and so on will be about these same characters or if they'll introduce others), I'd definitely pick up book 2 as soon as I could simply because I enjoy these characters so much.

When It's Least Expected is a heart wrenching, sweet love story about two 17 year olds trying to find their way through the crappy hands that they have been dealt, find themselves and that special someone This book has everything.... heartache, heartbreak, ups, downs, laughs, and cries. I never knew exactly how it was going to end. That was what really kept me turning those pages quicker than my fingers could swipe my Kindle. AMAZEBALL!!

Mason and Harley were absolutely, positively matches made in heaven. They complimented each other so well and their constant bantering hooked me from the minute they met. Some book couples have to rub off on you, not these two... they are peas and carrots, hot dog and mustard, peanut butter and jelly... made for each other. Their connection was instantaneous and brought out the best and worst in each other. They had me belly laughing with nicknames (AKA Little Beast), they were both extremely strong willed individuals who fed off of each other, locked horns, and gave off the you suck... but please suck me vibe! LOL

There were parts of WILE that I had to bookmark my Kindle only to regain my composure and not wake my entire house up from my boo-hooing. The part where Mason explains why he calls Harley his Little Beast... get your tissues ready! Both of these young lovers had their fair share of heartache. Mason thinks he is leaving his sunny California for some boring small, backwater town in Nebraska. Little does he know that he will meet the girl of his dreams and his other half there. I thought this book had the perfect mix of all emotions and wish now that I wouldn't have devoured it so quickly so I wouldn't be finished already.

The hero and heroine are amazeball, but the secondary characters are just as intriguing! The combination of amazing writing, like-able characters, and a stupendous story rate WILE a definite 5 stars on the knock my socks off scale!! Kudos to Heather Van Fleet for writing an out of the ballpark book!!

I have always loved the saying that good things happen to those who wait and when they least expect it because I think it is so very true. It also happens to be the perfect title for this story. A story about two people who come together and not only discover a great friendship in the process but a great love as well. One that is healing and soothing and everything a great love should be.

I really loved Mason, I didn't love him all the time because, let's face it, the boy made some pretty stupid mistakes along the way with Harley (love that name!) but, he tried, he really really did and I had to give him credit for that, especially since he really had never been in love with someone before and being a clueless boy in love, yeah, never a good thing when it comes to the smarts department. He was bound to make some mistakes and hopefully learn along the way and you know what? He did learn and he did get better and of course, I had to fall in love with him for that all over again, I couldn't help it.

Both Mason and Harley had some pretty big secrets and some deep hurts and they learned a lot from each other along the way. They kind of had the whole, the good, the bad and the ugly thing going on. They saw each other through a lot of crap and instead of crumbling and falling apart they grew stronger, alone and together and even though they had their weak disastrous moments, they were better and stronger together and I will forever be a sucker for stories like theirs.

The author did a great job portraying their love for one another. Showing how two young people grow together and sometimes even apart. How any good relationship should be built on friendship first and how life isn't always easy, regardless of your background. That things in the past, do not determine our future, we determine our future.

When It's Least Expected is the first book of the Perfect Timing Series. It's also my first book by Heather Van Fleet.

It's a sweet young high school romance between two lost yet beautiful souls.

Mason Daniel is the new kid who just moved to Oklahoma from Southern California with his mom and sister to complete his senior year in high school. He's gorgeous with the bad boy surfer vibe and has every girl drooling for miles. He's running from tragedy and has every expectation that he'll go back to his surfing days in Cali the moment he turns 18. He meets the beautiful, feisty Harley Anderson and his world tips on its axis.

Van Fleet takes us through their bantering and budding friendship. They both have baggage - lots of secret baggage filled with anguish and guilt. They are adamant to not let each other across the secret barriers. It's an emotional story of heartbreak and healing. Van Fleet keeps it interesting by adding twists, turns and multiple challenges to add to the depth and substance of the storyline.

Van Fleet also provides a solid supporting cast of characters with siblings and best friends for additional complexity and depth. They are teasers for additional stories in the series.

The storyline rates 4 - 5 stars and kept me intrigued from the beginning to the end. However, there were numerous editing errors mixed throughout the book; therefore the rating dropped.

Aside from that, I loved the characters and the storyline. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series, A Long Time Coming, between Harley's twin brother David and her best friend Abigail.

I definitely recommend this book to read

This is the story of Harley(I LOVE Her name!) and Mason.Harley has been dealing with guilt from a tragedy twofold for several years now.Poor Harley has been through so much in her life and Mason..heck Masons a young guy not planning on staying for long.Mason..Mason Mason Mason. What a cocky guy Mason is.Its so nice to see him knocked to his feet..with his tongue hanging out when he sees Harley.I really enjoyed this story. Its from both points of view.I think it would have been a tiny bit helpful if when the Point of View changed it was like written above the start of the paragraph. But other then that I loved the story.I really really love when two people who are lost find each other. Im SOOOOO Glad this is a series.I LOVED the ending and Cannot wait to read more by Heather Van Fleet! What an amazing Debut Novel!

Will they fail,in their search for contentment and
happiness, or will they find true love, when it’s least expected?

This book now has to be one of my very favorite YA romance novels,
It's sweet, funny, sexy and at times left me completely lost for words.
Harley our heroine has not had an easy teenage -hood to say the least and she meets Surfer boy Mason, they don't exactly hit it off at first, but this book is about their journey. Here is my usual line of, I'm not going to tell you what happens you're going to have to read it!
Just know that this book is amazing it touches on some heavy subjects but Heather has done a fabulous job in portraying well developed and very loveable characters not only in Harley and Mason but in all the characters in the book, I really did enjoy following their story and I can not wait to read more.

My Review:

WOOHOO !!!!

When It's Least Expected wasn't at all what I expected but it is what the title says, 'when it's least expected', you read a book that throws you completely! I didn't used to be a YA reader but I am truly and thoroughly hooked. As an author, i know the feeling of that nail-biting pulling-your-hair-out having to wait for a review , not knowing if the reader will like it but our author, Heather Van Fleet shouldn't ever have to worry about this one again.

What a great story and I loved Harley !!! I also truly believe .... (read the entire review here... http://www.apassionforromance.blogspo...

My FAV quote by surfer boy hero, Mason, in a letter Harley, the heroine.

“Surfing is serene, almost as if I’m taming the waves myself, while they rock my world in a way nobody truly understands but me. Back home, my dad and I used to call the waves beasts because they were always so powerful and so captivating, just like you, Har, except for the fact that you are beyond just powerful and captivating to me. You’re strong, you’re beautiful, and you’re completely empowering. Not quite as big, obviously, but still just as consuming.
YOU, Harley Ann, are my beast. My perfect wave, my high, my one, true love.”

There are a few obvious editing errors.
The story was cute.
But you're pulling my leg if you want me to believe that 17 years old boys give those long speeches about love, forgiveness and EMOTIONS in general. I overlooked ALL that because no matter what I like to read about that ;-)
I hope the author will have her mind set to write about David and Abigail (PLEASE stop shortening her name - I really dislike "Abs", also "Har" for Harley -- they don't sound good to me, at all) and Maisy and Jake should have their own story (fast forward a few years).

This is a great story. Heart touching and full of great characters. I really enjoyed this book mostly because I don't read books like this but it has definitely opened my eyes to a new genera.
