Do you want to join the digital nomad community and live a location independent life by working remotely?
Do you want to travel the world indefinitely, setting up your office in cafes with views of crystal clear seas in Greece, guesthouses with mountain views in the Rockies, next to a mouthwatering bowl of Gnocchi Gorgonzola in Italy, or anywhere you can get the bloody wifi connection to work?
You might have seen expensive courses or trendy Instagram accounts giving advice how to work remotely and travel forever. These might have been filled with images of computers on beaches, touting how easy it is to work less and roll around in your hoards of sweet, sweet cash. But, when you read this book, you’ll realize keeping sand out of your keyboard when you go to the beach is really hard.
In this book, you’ll learn how Kayla has travelled around the world for over five years from the Ashrams of India to the ruins of Greece, teaching herself the skills she needed to start a successful online career.
You’ll also learn:
- How Kayla saved enough to take a one-year backpacking trip when she was making less than 40k a year. - How the author grows, rather than depletes, her savings account while she travels the world. - How you can volunteer or work abroad. - How the author went from being broke in London to starting two successful businesses and how you can apply your skills and experience to a digital nomad career. - The options for going remote including freelancing, starting your own business, teaching online, and more. - How the author, a self-described terrible decision maker, chooses where to live & what to pack. - How to answer questions like, ‘when are you going to get a real job?’ - How to make lifelong friends on the road.
This book isn't filled with empty promises on how easy it’s going to be to work 5 hours a week and become a millionaire while you yacht around the world. It’s a realistic account of a girl who works like 20-ish hours a week... more or less... depending on how many weird festivals are on.
If you're serious about starting a sustainable digital nomad lifestyle, this is the book for you.
This is a great little book, full of very practical information about how you can travel and work at the same time. As well as being packed with tips and advice, the book tells a lot of Kayla´s own story, how she overcame chronic illness to run two successful businesses and travel the world. I liked the personal chapters on travelling solo as a female and also on her personal pet hates about travellers - very funny! I also learned a word I didn´t know - begpacking, which I think is hilarious!
I was delighted to be given a copy of this book to read. I wasn't paid to review it but once I read it I kept meaning to leave a review.
I'm Twitter friends with the author of this book but don't know them personally in the real world. I like to think that if we ever met up we'd become fast friends and drink tea whilst talking about travel.
That said, I wasn't bribed in any way (including tea) to write this review.
I get an awful lot of books sent my way but this was one I actually wanted to read, and did read, and genuinely enjoyed.
I loved this book so much that I kept putting off writing a review because I didn't have time to do it justice.
It has taken me so long to review people's work (due to health issues and work priorites) that I've pretty much stopped writing reviews.
I rated this on Goodreads and kept meaning to go back and write a proper review but never had the time.
I've read a lot of unmemorable books on the subject of being a digital nomad. After a while most of them blur together.
So what a nice change to read one that is actually good, contains useful advice, and has a realistic perspective of what life on the road is like.
Kayla has worked as a digital nomad with a successful yoga practice.
I loved the refreshing humour in the book. It is disarmingly honest and forthright. No sitting on the beach with your laptop whilst sipping a Mai Tai. You could do that but you might spill something or get sand in it!
This is a far cry from the typical tech bro douchebaggery that you get with a lot of digital nomad type content.
Y0u get real advice from a real person who isn't trying to sell you on the dream of escaping your cubicle at work.
It also manages to give solid travel advice for women without being sexist.
That should go without saying, of course, but I've read a lot of travel advice and some of them are either incredibly patronising towards women or screechingly hysterical about men.
This book made we want to travel again. I long to travel the world with nothing but a laptop and my backpack.
If you have ever considered traveling the world or living in a foreign country (not just as a tourist), this book gives not only one woman's personal story, but her personal hints, tips, and tricks learned from a life living and working on the road. The book is well organized. The first section is about being just a regular nomad, either volunteering or find work in other countries. The bulk of the book is about being a digital nomad, whether as a freelancer, an entrepreneur, or working remotely for a company. The author has set up several businesses that have allowed her to add to her bank account while still enjoying travel around the world. I like how she interweaves her personal experiences with the tips, techniques, and the knowledge you need if you are going to consider this kind of lifestyle. Before you book your first plane ticket for the new nomad life you envision for yourself, I recommend reading this book to get a sense of what it is really like as well as some ideas that will help you make the transition more smoothly.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
This book includes a wealth of resources at the end, and the first half of the book was filled with useful information presented in a light, humorous tone. I really enjoyed reading the helpful tips about ideas for becoming a digital nomad, how to finance travelling, and places to stay. After approximately the first half, however, the book focused more on the authors experiences and complaints than anything else. If the book ended before then, I would have rated it higher. Some people may enjoy those stories, but reading about someone else's experiences (especially when it does not offer any useful information to use for my own experiences) is not my thing.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review, but my opinions are my own.
Practical while at the same time full of laughs, this book was exactly what I was looking for! I am not a true digital nomad but I am an expat living abroad and this has been such a great resource. It goes beyond the typical recommendations and tips, really delving into specifics and somehow predicting your questions by providing the answers before you even know you needed it! Refreshing to get real life experience - highlighting the positive sides but also realistic (and usually with a laugh!). Highly recommend - would make a great gift for that traveler/experience-seeker in your life, too!
Not your average travel guide, this book delves into the mysterious art of becoming a digital nomad and gives you valuable tips on getting started in this profession. The book has many of the authors personal experiences of travelling and throws some wit and humour at you as well. The book blends her personal journey of becoming a digital nomad with advise for others looking to do the same.
If you are interested in a digital nomad lifestyle (or not and are just curious) then this book is a must have.
As a digital nomad and avid traveler myself, I was interested to see what Kayla had to say on the subject. This was a great read with lessons of travel and the truth about being a digital nomad backed-up with entertaining antidotes of Kayla's own experiences.
Everything she writes that I have experience in rings true. She also writes a lot about things I have no experience in, and I have no doubt it is all sound advice. An entertaining and informative read.
I really enjoyed how the writer shared her own personal experiences with working and traveling abroad. She had two businesses and still saw the wonders of the world. If you want to go and see the world, but still want to work for those locations, this is the book for you. It is full of advice and great resources to check out. You don't want to miss this book.
I loved reading this book!! So much information and so much fun! If you are at all considering the digital nomad life, this book will help you start that life! It was informative, funny and realistic about the life of a nomad both the highs and the lows! Loved every word!
So informative, lots of tips, lists, and practical advice for working and travelling abroad. It’s also funny and a good story at the same time. What a great read!!
