Faith Martin is a pen name of English author Jacquie Walton, who is best known for her popular detective series, starring Detective Inspector Hillary Greene.
I've read 16 DI Hillary Greene novels practically back-to-back so the reviews will be of necessity a bit brief. If you are binge-reading like I am the reminders of what happened previously can be a bit repetitive, but I imagine it means a new reader could jump right in and get up to speed quickly.
MURDER AT HOME Flo Jenkins is found murdered in her armchair, a paperknife sticking out of her chest. It was common knowledge the old woman only had weeks to live. Why kill a dying woman? DI Hillary Greene faces one of her toughest cases yet.
I did not see this one coming, and yet there was mention of the crucial fact at the start of the novel if I had but realised it was important. I assumed and you know what that does ...
MURDER IN THE MEADOW Wayne Sutton is found dead by a stream in a beautiful meadow. His head has been bashed in and a red paper heart left on his body. Who would kill the handsome young artist, who had a reputation as a ladies’ man? Can Hillary get to the bottom of a complex case involving jealousy, love, and cold-blooded murder?
I initially remembered who was guilty but not why, but looked at a few other reviews and it all came flooding back. Once again, there is something mentioned at the start of the novel which is highly relevant to the motive for murder.
MURDER IN THE MANSION Mattie Jones is found brutally stabbed to death in her palatial home. DI Hillary Greene discovers that the victim’s snobby attitude had made her many enemies. But who hated this wealthy woman enough to kill her? Hillary tackles one of her most complex cases yet. Could a blast from the past shed any light?
In addition, there's a sniper picking off police officers at random outside their stations, everyone is looking over their shoulders.
Meanwhile, Hillary's boss Mel is dealing with an horrific case which is falling apart on a technicality.
MURDER IN THE GARDEN Edward Philpott is found bludgeoned to death with his own spade in his beautiful garden. Hillary’s only lead is a rival from the village flower show who used to argue with the victim about the size of their vegetables. But what dark secrets from the past and present does this village hold?
Edward's family life is tragic. His young daughter was widowed and she had her daughter have moved back in with him, now she has incurable cancer and only a few weeks or months to live.
Meanwhile, the station is rocked by the murder of Hillary's boss, was it the sniper who has been picking off random officers, or could it be linked to the case which went sideways? And if the latter, can they prove it?
MURDER BY FIRE David Merchant’s body is found in a bonfire in his back garden. David was a publisher and devout Christian. Who would want to kill this seemingly very decent man? DI Hillary Greene faces one of her most puzzling cases as she struggles to find anyone with a strong motive to kill the pious publisher.
I felt, perhaps because I am reading this book 13 years after it was originally published and we as a society are more aware (still trying not to give away spoilers), that the 'big reveal' was obvious almost right from the start and hence I guessed the murderer fairly early on.
These five volumes are all extremely readable, (as were volumes 1 - 5), with believable storylines. Starring DI Hillary Greene, ten murders and ten solved is her history. She really is a super sleuth, forgets nothing and, as she repeatedly says to her team, investigate all alibi’s and leave no stone unturned. She is a good honest copper and solves her cases with hard work and thoroughness. Sad really that there are no more volumes starring this DI, I will seriously miss her, great reads.
I liked it. I've read the first 10 books and have now skipped ahead to book 17 "Hillary's Final Case". I may visit 11~16 at some other time, just to see how DI Greene's life moved along. Good writing, kept me reading through several books My reading order was 2, 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 ~ 17 (currently reading 17).
Without spoiling, I was able to glean the book 10 murderer several chapters before the reveal.
The author’s ability to juggle and successfully and believably resolve numerous compelling and original plot lines is amazing. Books 6-10 show a sure-footed and ever improving ability as a writer. As for her creation, Hillary Greene, Martin has the hardest of all task - to create a complicated, complex, infuriating flesh and blood character that a reader simply can’t get enough of. Bravo. And secondary characters? A plus.
Another 5 great stories in a box set. The plots of each murder are excellent where you are kept guessing to the end. As well you have the underlying stories of the characters woven throughout the books that add to the mix. These are books I highly recommend, and I can not wait to start the next in the series.
Books 6-10 were great reads and I finished them fast as I couldn't put the down. The individual mysteries were fun to areas but I also liked getting to know the new persons added to her staff and their stories. I've now read Books 1-10 and I'm looking forward to reading more Hillary Greene mysteries.
I must admit to becoming somewhat addicted to this series. DI Hillary Greene is attractive and complex. Her capacity to solve murders is intriguing. The supporting cast is also interesting. I have become so involved that I have wished for more joy in Hillary's life. Well written/
Very entertaining and well written. I like the dual plots and Hillery’s intelligence and intuition. I hope she finds deeper connections in her personal life.
I read the five books in this box set one after the other, becoming well acquainted and fond of the characters. The story lines were good and kept me intrigued guessing the who dunnit. Very enjoyable easy reading.
As usual, could not put the books down! Once you start reading about Hillary Green you just have to go on until the end of the book! Read all of them one after another! Great plots and great reading!
I’m fascinated with crime stories but not so much with a lot of the ones with out and out violence. These books got my interest from the beginning and couldn’t put them down. Look forward to reading more similar books
I have read all of the Hillary Greene series. I enjoyed every book. The characters were great and so individual. I hated to come to the last book. Surely there will be more ,won't there????
Suspenseful. Page turner. Not usually predictable. Hillary a likable but multilayered character. All the characters are distinct and colorful. The good ones grow on you with each story line.
I enjoyed every story in this British crime series. I have reviewed each one separately, so will just say they were well-written, engaging, twisty and mysterious.
Great books great stories great who done it's. Up to last book that was to my mind to far fetched with the personal issues of all the team holding sway over a murder investigation . On the while though brilliant reax.
I've read the first ten books in series. I alternate between these and more serious books for a break. They keep you interested in the action and Hillary is not a super action hero like you see in so many books. A nice way to relax.
Very easy reading but still hold your interest. If you’re a little stressed or depressed you can have a read, relax for a little while and forget your own problems.
This series is interesting and different than most police series. DI Hillary Greene is a constant but the rest of her team is constantly changing. Some of the characters I was a little sad to see go but I guess that is part of the story arc because Hillary seems to be evolving and re-evaluating her worth to the department as well. Book 9 and 10 have a shocking event in them that was tough to read but made for a great story. Can’t wait to continue on with the series. Will definitely check out this author’s other series.
