Charles H Baker was the Indiana Jones of the 1920's. An essential cocktail book for the cocktail enthusiast or barman. From classics such as Remember the Maine, Jimmie Roosevelt, Pendennis Club Special, and Between the Sheets, to name a few, one can surmise that this book should be number two on an arranged list for the imbibing connoisseur (with David Embury's "The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks" taking the reins). A good companion also to DIY bitters, syrups, shrubs, liqueurs, cider, and fruit wines (not to mention archaic remedies for concussions, nausea, and hangovers.) His vast wealth of knowledge from traveling and cultural relevance as a true bon vivant opens the door to our current globalized renaissance before prohibition shut the doors on one of our greatest inventions, the cocktail.

The Gentleman's Companion, Vol. II is a masterpiece tribute to travel and American obsession and influence in the cocktail culture that is finally making a sophisticated and saucy comeback.

I suggest everyone who enjoys a stiff drink and/or fantasizes about a far off place own this book. It is not necessary to read in one sitting and is in fact more enjoyable to pick up and read a chapter sporadically or when inspired. It provides context, history, rules, and a peek into fantastic lives and genius discoveries to see the world with a proper beverage.
