A good collection of primary sources related to the 2010 "Compton Cookout" and following events at UCSD. The primary sources are arranged in such a way that the reader learns the entire story without any commentary from the authors.

However, the text is plagued with editing choices that often distract. For instance, there are several spelling errors throughout the sources and other formatting errors. For example, in a portion of a web comment, "wasn't" is presented as "wasn%u2019t"

On top of this, the primary sources are differentiated from one another by font. No two adjacent sources have the same font. Although this may have sounded good in practice, it actually hurts the sources. For instance, some serious arguments are presented with a playful font, making them appear less serious.

Although the introduction clearly states that this text's goal is simply to present the sources for one side of the argument, it would have been nice to also see sources presented from the other sides as well. Overall, it is a good collection.

As a UCSD alum who was present during the racist acts committed on campus in the Spring of 2010, I appreciated the honest account of what happened during those months.

The book is a collective of emails, internet postings, written works and letters. It paints a picture of the heartache, frustration, hatred and healing that took place on my college campus. I agreed with some points, and chose to disagree with others. However, I do believe that it was noble of a group of graduate students to honestly document what happened so that we never forget how powerful and destructive discrimination can be.
