This is not the first book I have read by Joseph M. Lenard. As a matter of fact, I am mentioned in the About the Author section. I would say this is an excellent book for the beginning writer who wishes to learn how to get their book published and how to put it together and get it ready. I didn’t have a book to help me get started. I had a mentor who started out writing trade publications in the romance field and, wanting to have more control of her writing, went independent.

Sometimes I wish I had a book that points out the places I screwed up. This book does that for you.

In chapter 4, Joseph covers research. This is a subject that I am very familiar with as I research everything I write. I wrote a guest blog on Firstediting.com on this subject and where to find what you need. My favorite two things are the FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) request and NARA (National Archives and Records Administration), which is a good site for military records.

Chapter 11 is about editing. That is something all writers have to do. Edit, edit and when you think your manuscript is done, edit some more. Do not depend on those friends who say everything is great. Once you are done, find an editor to find the things you missed. Make sure it is an editor familiar with the subject matter. I have run into that as I write military novels and use period language. When an editor tells me that “word” is inappropriate, I don’t use that editor. I would suggest one thing, invest in a good grammar checker. There are several on the market.

There is one thing I have problems with, and that is marketing. My books receive great reviews. I research everything I write, but the one thing I can’t do is figure out how to market. I have followed the experts and started Twitter, Instagram, a website, and Facebook Author pages but unless you have a known name, getting to that #1 slot on Amazon is next to impossible.

Follow Joseph’s guide, which will help you find your way in the writing world.

Breaking into self-publishing is the easy part.

I bought this book to get a grip on what it takes to self-publish on Amazon. I read through it quickly, finding what I thought I needed. I published nine books in six months, and my dreams were fulfilled only partially. The larger aspect was to sell books. To be published is as easy as understanding formatting. To be successful requires so much more.
I am now reading this book and finding where I messed up in my rush to be published. Lenard has put together a great tool for authors like me: Prolific writers who are rudderless marketers. To make matters worse, I also lacked a clear vision for my journey, so ending up dazed and confused on the rocks was my destination. Getting harassed by unscrupulous marketers like hookers on a Vegas strip was a warning I overlooked.
Definitely a must read and it has to be a "must understand" for every writer.

A book that covers non-writing aspects of writing that authors must hate. The book starts with planning (outline, character, and scene development) and plotting a book. It ends with how to turn the book into a polished product and get it into the world. There are grammatical issues with the book, but it can still be relevant as a guide path for new writers, or as a checklist for experienced authors.
