An early modernist, Chagall was associated with the École de Paris, as well as several major artistic styles and created works in a wide range of artistic formats, including painting, drawings, book illustrations, stained glass, stage sets, ceramics, tapestries and fine art prints.
Chagall lived in France and Russia for decades but in 1941, he settled in New York, which was full of writers, painters, and composers who, like himself, had fled from Europe during the Nazi invasions.
After the war, he chose to return to France and spent his last years living in the Côte d'Azur.

Van het dorpje Vitebsk naar de internationale kunstwereld: Marc Chagall: Origins and Paths volgt de bijzondere reis van Marc Chagall en laat zien hoe zijn joodse en spirituele achtergrond zijn kunst diepgaand beïnvloedde. Hij verweeft religieuze symbolen, Bijbelse verhalen en volksmotieven in zijn schilderijen, zoals in The Fiddler, waar een zwevende muzikant en dorpse figuren een bijna droomachtige compositie vormen, en in White Crucifixion, waarin Christus wordt gecombineerd met joodse iconografie.
Het boek laat ook zien hoe historische gebeurtenissen, zoals de Russische Revolutie en de Tweede Wereldoorlog, zijn werk vormden, waarbij tragische ervaringen worden vermengd met hoop en transcendentie.
