OFFICIAL DISTRIBUTOR; MyHebrewBooks Hebrew from Scratch is also known as 'Ivrit min hathahala'. It's a comprehensive textbook, grammar and exercise book for the beginner adult student. Widely used by high school and university students. The instructions for the exercises as well as the translations of the vocabulary lists are in English. Otherwise, the course is based on Hebrew-only instruction. One of the best, friendliest, Hebrew teaching books, this book immerses the student in Hebrew, but without overwhelming the English speaker who is trying to learn a language that is so very different than English. A guide for this book can be purchase separately.
I'm using this book to study Modern Hebrew on my own after completing two years of formal study at Portland State. My class used Hebrew from Scratch Part I for the first two years and is using Modern Hebrew Part II for the third year. I'm going to try to struggle through Hebrew from Scratch Part II for the next eight months or so, since I plan to return to formal study at Portland State in the fall.
Hebrew from Scratch Part II consists of sixteen lessons – chapters, really. Part II divides these sixteen chapters into five segments. Each chapter in Part II, from what I can see, consists of about twenty exercises, which seems about double the number of exercises in the Hebrew from Scratch Part I chapters. Each of these five segments of lessons concludes with a "timeout, " basically a review and recap of the part. (Hebrew from Scratch Part II starts with a "timeout," which serves as a review/recap of what should have been learned in Hebrew from Scratch Part I.)
A set of audio CDs accompanies Hebrew from Scratch Part II. (Actually, I had to buy the tapes separately.) Some of the exercises in the book require the user to listen to these tapes, although the student could just read the exercise text, but that would defeat the purpose of the exercise. (When I took the first two years of Modern Hebrew, I didn't buy the tapes but just read the text.)
Well, I finally finished Chapter 3. Studying on my own is really painstakingly slow, but at least I'm motivated to overcome this. The downside is that I'm getting no feedback; nevertheless – on to Chapter 4.
