For those who aren’t already aware, #jameshaskell is a former England Rugby Union player, who among other things is a co-host of @goodbadrugby podcast and author of two thoroughly enjoyable autobiographies (What A Flanker & Ruck Me), all of which I would highly recommend. This book is designed to be about self development, and James’s 5 key pillars, which he hopes will assist you in making changes to your life:
1)Recognise
2)Reflect
3) Resist
4) Change
5) Progress

My initial reaction to this book’s release was to be dismissive as I didn’t feel that coaching on self development was necessarily James’s area of expertise. Having opened it in a bookshop I became optimistic that this could be of value. Having read the book, I would have to say that my initial reaction to its release would be closer to the reality and that I have been disappointed by its content.
Firstly, the introduction lasts around 80 pages and consists mainly of a rant about behaviour on social media, as well as a lot of “this book aims to” and “the purpose of this book is”, pointing out the journey of this book, of which I never felt it really reached its destination.
Whilst James makes some good points and observations throughout, attempting to add in some of his own examples for context, I didn’t feel that the exact points he was trying to make and the tools he was trying to provide the reader with, to aid in their own journey were outstandingly clear. James mentions various quotes from well known philosophers and psychologists along the way, but I didn’t feel he went deep enough in explaining their meaning and purpose, and an example would be the very same psychological model that made me buy the book initially.
I personally preferred and would recommend reading both of the @highperformance books, which made use of @liquidthinker background in sports psychology to provide further context and insight into the quotes and models chosen. These were not only discussed, but supported by interactive tasks for the reader to complete.
