Review of Ah-Fur Super Sleuth Book One:
The Case of the Missing Moggies
By Debra Clewer
Illustrations be Kym Langfield
Morris Publishing Australia

There’s a lot of fun to be had in this first adventure of Ah-Fur, the cat detective who, with his faithful cousin, Show-Fur, flies off in the T-Rex jet to London. The British Prime Minister, Ivor Bighouse, has asked the Australian PM, Martin Bigcheese, for help in rescuing his prized mousers, Winston and Ponzie who have been cat-napped. Ah-Fur is the cat for the job.
Once in London, the cousins team up with an undercover policeman who keeps his real name secret even from his squad, and Show-Fur’s uncle, Marvin to track down the culprits (or culp-rats) and save the hapless moggies from a nasty fate.
The story bounces along, told by Ah-Fur, who is a gentlecat detective with a Bondish love of gadgets. Luckily, there are plenty to be had. The cats are also fond of their food, and Ah-Fur details meals with as much relish as he uses for stakeouts and chasing a red herring which, naturally, Show-Fur considers might be a meal rather than a clue. The book is one that confident readers could read alone. Its 115 pages clock thirty chapters, which also makes it idea for bedtime reading. Adults will enjoy it too, with the many sly puns and allusions to literary culture.
The storyline is resolved, but there’s a hook bringing a hint of what might be next in store for Ah-Fur…after he’s finished cleaning his waistcoats and his whiskers. Oh, and look out for the lady cat ninja…I really hope to meet her again (and so does Ah-Fur!)
Physically, the book is a nice size for smaller hands. It has a good clear font and an open look as well as a few illustrations. The cover, with its magnifying glass and a rear view of Ah-Fur consulting his Catphone nicely blends the classic with the modern.
