I know this isn't a book but since they have it here on GoodReads why not write a review. I had seen some videos revolving around this movie on my YouTube recommended page and was intrigued and decided to watch it. Before watching this movie, I wish I had been warned about it. This movie may seem like a normal coming-of-age movie but by the end, I guarantee something in you will have changed. This movie is dark, and depressing and will take your innocence away but it is indeed a beautiful film to watch. Despite the entire movie being in Japanese, even without the English subtitles the whole story can be displayed through the cinematography and ethereal soundtrack. Another thing that made this movie so mesmerizing was how it understood and made you relate to the intense years of becoming a teenager.
The main character, Yuichi, as well as almost all of the young characters featured in the movie involved in one common theme which is finding escape in the fictional artist Lily Chou Chou. Her music is heavily influenced by Claude Debussy and by this, does a wonderful job at conveying the subtleness and calmness of her music in contrast to the dark and chaotic things the characters go through. The main antagonist of the movie, Hoshino is introduced into the movie as a quiet, smart kid. At school, he is bullied for being class president. Yuichi befriends Hoshino and the real beginning of the story starts from there. Throughout the movie, different messages in a fan-based chatroom for Lily Chou Chou named "Lilyphilia" are shown from time to time on the screen. Yuichi being an admin of this website goes by the name "philia". Hoshino's involvement in the chatroom is later revealed around the end. Despite each character using Lily's music in arguably, the same way, each character also has a different and unique viewpoint on the interpretations of her music and the power it holds.
If I were to write about the whole movie it would take forever. I wouldn't really recommend this movie to anyone, but if you want to watch it, you totally should. However, I would warn you the topics are quite mature and sensitive.
Read this novel and watched this film when I was in elementary school and I was lowkey traumatized. I was thinking to myself, damn the Japanese are dark and twisted! Not just their porn! 😮
People think Japan is a great country. No it’s not. They make great porn and hentai and anime and artsy things, but it’s a godless capitalist hell, especially for teenagers. Still way better than China though
