The Easy Christmas Cookie Cookbook: 100+ Delicious Recipes and Treats Christmas Baked for a Simply Magical Holiday | Special Christmas Cookies Recipes with Pictures
The title doesn't lie or exaggerate, these cookies are easy to make and bake. I liked the large print format, it's easy to see the ingredients and steps as you are baking. There's also a nice variety of cookie flavors and textures. Some might be a stretch to refer to as Christmas cookies, but you can use your own ingenuity to make them fit the holiday season if desired. The Bell Cookie Pizza is a perfect example, nowhere in the directions does it tell you to shape the pizza into a bell shape, but you can deduce that maybe that was supposed to be part of the directions.
Speaking of missing directions, the book is in need of proofreading. Some recipes have small typos, others are simply lacking a step or two and can easily be assumed, others require a hopeful guess, while still others are a total mismatch between ingredients and directions.
This looks like it could be a nice cookie book for beginning young bakers, but I would recommend a read-through of the recipe first by a supervising adult. Some things are understood by those who have done some amount of cooking/baking, but might be taken quite literally by a new learner. For example, many recipes say, "Pour 1 scoop of cookie dough on the prepared cooking sheet," instead of the usual, "Drop by rounded tablespoon . . ." Imagine how long it would take to bake 2 dozen cookies baking them just one at a time!
Many recipes call for cake mixes or already prepared cookie dough, that may be a plus if that is your style or you are pressed for time. Some recipe names may mislead you into thinking they are familiar favorites, but in reality they are a simpler, sham version of the real thing. No worries, those cookies have a time and a place too, but I don't equate them with Christmas and the sharing of the season.
All of the contents are presented in black and white and there are few photos, and those are stock photos, not necessarily resembling the finished product resulting from that particular recipe or even that particular cookie!
Despite its flaws, there are many recipes that can easily be followed or accommodated for by people who have done basic cooking and baking. Many are familiar cookies and these recipes may just outline or offer a less complicated version of a favorite treat. Bearing that in mind, the cookbook can be appreciated for its no fuss, no frills style and may find more of a year-round use than a Christmas season one. 2.5 stars rounded down.
I love baking cookies with my kids at Christmas time and I was looking for some new ideas. I liked that this book had some classics like peanut butter blossums. However, there were also new and fresh ideas like cheesecake cookies or chocolate hazelnut stuffed cookies. I found the directions clear and easy to understand and follow. All the i gredients made sense and seemed to be accurate measurements. I will definitely use this year after year.
The recipes are clear and easy to follow. There is a great variety of recipes. I wish there were photos of each cookie though. They say we eat with our eyes as much as our mouth and I would like an idea of what each cookie might look like.
