About the author

Michael Smorenburg (b. 1964) grew up in Cape Town, South Africa. An entrepreneur with a passion for marketing, in 1995 Michael moved to California where he founded a business consultancy and online media and marketing engine. In 2003 he returned to South Africa where he launched then sold a security company. He is a passionate investor in Bitcoin and Crypto, operates a property management company, and writes full time.

Michael's greatest love is for the ocean and the environment. His passion is macro economics, science, understanding the cosmos, and communicating the urgent need for reason to prevail over superstition.

I never thought I'd find a book on the future of finance and the monetary system to be as accessible to read. Michael Smorenburg has done a remarkable job at simplifying what is usually presented in complex economic discourse and industry 'code' in a way that is comprehensible and interesting to any rational person. Simplification of the complex seems to be Smorenburg's 'superpower'. The point of the book that hit home the most for me was his arguments that crypto-currencies (Bitcoin in particular) are not merely currencies, but I futurist logic, based on Blockchain coding, that will dominate the world to come beyond the 'regulation' of money. The other argument worth noting is the clarion call for the decentralisation and democratisation of the global monetary system, which has largely failed us due to uncontrollable inflation and the subsequent devaluing of money. He makes no secret of the fact that he is an avid believer and investor in Bitcoin. There are of course counter arguments, but Smorenburg makes a compelling case for for the future of crypto-currencies: that you ignore it at our own peril. I recommend this book - to add to your repertoire of text on the topic - for anyone who is interested in the future of money and the currencies.

I never thought I would say this about a book on the dry topic of finance or anything related (legacy finance, crypto, bitcoin etc.), but Mr. Smorenburg’s book is an absolute page turner - not a dull page in the entire book! It is chock full of important and informative facts on the topic and everything related. It is a must-read for anyone interested in a deeper knowledge and understanding of what the talk in the media is all about (pros and cons). My only disappointment was when this ample volume was finished!

With a style that flows like an adventure novel, you will learn how block-chain, cryptocurrency, DeFi (decentralized finance) etc., are a revolution going on right now, and if you are unaware of it and don’t understand it, you will be missing out on an amazing opportunity.

In addition to the facts that the book contains, I am of the opinion that the book is permeated with an underlying sense of wisdom imparted by the author - which is indeed refreshing. I read the book twice because it was loaded with such valuable information. Highly recommended.

There is no shortage of articles, YouTube videos, and even books about Bitcoin etc, and I have absorbed a lot of that. However i still learned quite a lot I didn’t know by reading this book. If anything can make you a cryptocurrency convert, this book can. All of the pros are very well explained.
I personally remain on the side of Mark Cuban and Bill Gates, who I think do actually understand the whole story. So I don’t agree with everything in this book. Primarily, I do not think that the money supply relative to gdp/ interest rates/inflation targeting et al can be controlled by a computer programmer. Not yet, anyway

Michael Smorenburg has done an excellent job of demystifying 'the cryptosphere'. At the start of this book I was a dedicated Bitcoin sceptic, happy to condemn all things crypto for the simple reason that I found them too difficult to understand. Now, through his breezy writing style and uncomplicated and lucid language, I have quickly learned the importance of Blockchain and the revolution it has already set in progress. The book's forte is how Smorenburg's casual voice belies an impressive command of his subject, very evidently built through lengthy research and practical experience. Being proved wrong isn't usually this entertaining.

Great book. It easily explains every crypto element & aspect, nook & cranny; set out in a way that flows well, with analogies and metaphors & wordsmith-like diction to illustrate more complex subjects in an interesting & illuminating manner, which is not easy to do, when your subject matter consists of complex financial algorithms. This guidebook explains all the fundamentals in almost every aspect of crypto. Sooner or later, crypto will be taught in universities & colleges, & this book ought to be the crypto book that everybody learns from. Great read.

A subject I hesitated to explore but after reading a few pages I suddenly was stuck reading what I thought would be boring and not my interest. But... I read the book as if it would be a novel, I am glad it lead me out of my ignorance about Bitcoin.
This belongs to a new era and I am glad to be part of it.
Easy reading, easy to capture the concepts.
I have gained some great knowledge and are very happy about it. Try it yourself.
Now I can even hold a conversation about Bitcoins, thank you for publishing this valuable book.

Apart from having a way with words, Smorenburg has a knack of "knowing" what the reader wants to hear next when narrating his story. An absolute gift that few writers possess. "In Code" starts with a gentle nudge, and climaxes with a giant push over the edge in all things crypto
For a novice like myself, it was the sort of gentle nudging I craved, and after reading "In Code" am now ready to join the wild wild west of crypto as it enters its next phase. This book could not have come (for me) at a more appropriate time, as we are about to enter a revolutionary financial epoch...

Before reading this book, I was totally ignorant of blockchain, coin mining, and anything related to Bitcoin. Now, thanks to Smorenburg, I am proud to own some Bitcoin and can speak on the subject with some little fluency. I got my son (an MIT PhD student) to read it over Christmas vacation, and he was impressed with the footnotes and valuable links throughout. He now also finds cryptocurrency a worthy part of his investment portfolio.

In Code We Trust is definitely worthy of a re-read and a book I'll be sharing with friends and family!

This book is eloquently written with a great touch of humour. It highlights the history of currency and how rapidly the world is changing in the digital age and how we can be a part of the evolution. Michael Smorenburg makes some strong arguments from a first principals perspective. He is ahead of the game and is clearly an expert on the fundamentals of blockchain. I highly recommend this read to anyone who wants to be a part of the inevitable future of the digital age.

Micheal has done an excellent job with this book. He has somehow managed to turn a complicated topic such as cryptocurrency into a an easily digestable book. This feels unlike a boring finance textbook, and more like a conversation with an educated person who explains Bitcoin and crypto and answers all the questions that you have about it.

I personally have recommended this book to people who have asked about cryptocurrency and bitcoin. It's that good!
