As an avid reader who has always wanted to read faster so I could just read more, I have read a fair amount of books on speed-reading. Most seem like repeats of each other. I'm happy to say this is not the case for this book. While the author certainly does espouse several techniques you will see in other books, he puts his own spin on them. In fact, this is just the type of nonfiction book I love to read, where someone shares their personal experience with a topic, adding shades of meaning and extra information no other book could have because it is true to one person's experience. The author shares he had trouble reading as a child, but he was determined to overcome them and did so with the help of a kind teacher. He states that what he shares in this book is what he learned then and has practiced since. The book comes across as if that were true. Instead of throwing a bunch of techniques at the reader (like so many speed-reading books!), the author focuses specifically on two: meta-guiding and perceptual expansion (increasing your awareness of peripheral vision while you read). He does offer other techniques or extensions and refinements of those two in later sections of the book, which is perfect. The two basic techniques need practice before you start refining or adding on. The book doesn't have a lot of fluff, which I appreciate. He explains the techniques simply but well; you'll have no trouble following what he suggests doing. He does something unusual in this book that I haven't seen in any other book on speed-reading, specifically addressing how to use it when you're studying for school. While I didn't know when I first downloaded this book from a book review site, I am actually returning to college very soon, and I found his suggestions about how to use speed-reading techniques and others to truly get text into your long-term memory and understanding. I will certainly use his study techniques soon! I highly recommend this book, whether it is your first on speed-reading or your tenth.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
