The Shifter Chronicles #11

Feather and Scroll

Rate this book
(Scrolls Book Five)

Agent Pan has spent most of his adult life protecting shapeshifters from the Knights—an organization bent on their annihilation—and keeping the secret war in the shadows where it belongs. But the Knights are growing bolder, and a new threat has resurfaced after being buried in the ocean for centuries.

An ancient scroll, a key to a devastating weapon, is now in the hands of a recalcitrant Russian hawk shifter named Viktor. As a bird shifter, he knows his duty is to protect the scroll, but he wants nothing to do with the war. He leads a quiet life and wants to keep it that way. But when agents come knocking on his door, he finds it difficult to resist the charms of Agent Pan, especially since this isn’t their first meeting.

Three years earlier they spent a passionate weekend together, neither aware of the other’s true identity. Viktor never really got over Pan. Now with sexual tension at its peak, they must learn to trust each other and work as a team to protect not only their loved ones, but every shifter in the world.

M.D. Grimm has wanted to write stories since second grade (kind of young to make life decisions, but whatever) and nothing has changed since then (well, plenty of things actually, but not that!).

Thankfully, she has indulgent parents who let her dream, but also made sure she understood she’d need a steady job to pay the bills (they never let her forget it!). After graduating from the University of Oregon and majoring in English, (let’s be honest: useless degree, what else was she going to do with it?) she started on her writing career and couldn’t be happier.

Working by day and writing by night (or any spare time she can carve out), she enjoys embarking on romantic quests and daring adventures (living vicariously, you could say) and creating characters that always triumph against the villain, (or else what’s the point?) finding their soul mate in the process.

M.D. Grimm returns to The Shifters series this month with book #11. I would like to remind readers that it might help if you read the previous books because there are information and events happening here that are interconnected. New readers might have to work extra to understand the background if they only start with this one.

Feather and Scroll shows how the Knights – an organization whose sole aim is to eradicate shifters as they see shifters as abomination – are getting bolder and bolder. Even if the Agency agents – organization that fights to protect shifters – was able to invade the Knights’ headquarters. They are also getting more hell bent to obtain the magical scrolls that have been guarded by bird shifters for centuries.

Two years ago, Agent Pan and Viktor Orlov, a hawk shifter, had a passionate one-night stand without knowing that their fate will intertwined again in the future. When Viktor’s younger sister steals one of the magical scrolls and brings it to Viktor, Pan arrives on his doorstep since the Agency wants to keep the scroll for safekeeping. The romance is okay, I guess, after eleven books I must admit that they start to feel rather similar. Neither Pan nor Viktor are strong enough to stand out in my memory *sorry boys*.

BUT I liked the progress of the whole arc – we finally know more about why the scrolls are important for Arcas (the Knights’ leader) and his world-domination goal. There is also ONE significant character — that previously is only mentioned – finally appears. I am curious about what this character will do in the next book.

PS: There is a cute update in the end of this book about my favorite agent, Poe, and his master bear shifter, Nordik. Very lovey dovey 🙂

It has been quite a while since I lost myself in the intrigue and adventures of one of ‘The Shifter Chronicles’ books. I read the first ten in the series fairly quickly and now I've had to wait to see what's going on with the Agency, the Knights, the lost scrolls, and all of my favorite characters. Having just met Agent Pan in the previous installment, I was interested to see what journey the author was going to take me on.

Imagine coming face to face with a guy you had some of the hottest sex of your life with two years before, the guy your hawk keeps insisting is your true mate even though you believe that to be nonsense and a fairy tale, and discovering he's with the Agency, an organization you believe to be no better than any secret police faction. Such is Viktor’s dilemma when he and Pan see each other. Viktor is still very Russian in his mind-set and thus he believes secrecy about anything pertaining to shifters is a must, regardless that the Agency is on the side of shifters. It was an interesting reunion, so to speak, between the two men!

4 Stars!!!

Feather and Scroll is book 11 in The Shifters series by M.D. Grimm and can be read as a standalone, which is what I did. I'm not sure if the characters appeared in previous books, however, the author gave enough background information regarding this world so I didn't really feel lost.

There are three main sides in this war, the Agency (who protects shifters from Knights), the Knights (who want to annihilate shifters) and the Shifters. Viktor is a bird shifter and his sister Stacey and her boyfriend stole an ancient scroll from a museum, that turns out to be one of four pieces that will release a beast that can kill the shifters. Agents Pan and Jin are sent to retrieve the scroll and as it turns out, Pan and Viktor had already met two years ago when they spent a passionate weekend together. However, there's no room in Pan's life for romance, since he is devoted to the Agency, no matter how attracted he is to Viktor. On the other hand, Viktor realizes Pan is his true mate and even if it pains him, he'll never force him to choose between him and the Agency. In the meantime, they'll need to work together to protect the scroll from the Knights who are trying to take it from them.

I loved Viktor, even if he came across as gruff, he was such a sweetheart and my heart broke for him and his hawk when they felt there was no future for him and Pan. I liked Pan, but he could be a tad, ahem, dense, sometimes. At least with respect to his and Viktor's feelings. They had great chemistry, though and I just loved how well they fit together, in and out of the bedroom. The sex was definitely hot!

This was such a detail-oriented read! There were so many things going on and so many characters and it was all so interesting. I loved Merlin and Glory and I'm very intrigued over what will happen now that they've come into the war against Arcas and the Knights. I think the author did a great job with the different storylines included in the book, some of which will continue in the next book(s) in the series. The ending is a bit of a cliffhanger, although Pan and Viktor's story is concluded here. Recommendable!

Feather and Scroll by M.D. Grimm is book eleven of the Shifter series. I hadn’t encountered this series before now, and I can say that you don’t need to have read the previous books to be able to enjoy this one. In Feather and Scroll we meet Viktor, a bird shifter, and Pan, an Agent sworn to protect all shifters. As legend has it, there are four scrolls, and, if used together, they unlock something that could be used to destroy all shifters. Bird shifters are the keepers of the scrolls.

In this installment, the main conflict is that a scroll has been found and the Knights want it. As a shifter, Viktor is sworn to protect it. Pan, as an Agent, feels it is his duty to take the scroll for the Agency to protect it. After all, it’s the Agency’s job to protect all shifters.

Amidst this conflict, the attraction between Viktor and Pan is developed. As a bird shifter, Viktor is cold, but once he finds his true mate, the bond is forever. Pan, as an Agent, is not allowed to form permanent ties. He’s married to the job, and any kind of distraction could prove deadly.

The beginning of the story was a bit slow since I didn’t know any of the history, but once the Knights came into the picture, the action ramped up and the central storyline took firm hold. For people who have read the previous books in the series, I’m sure the story picks up and flows perfectly from previous books. For me, the slower start was more than compensated for, and rather quickly. The action is fast-paced. Points of view are switched often so that we can follow multiple perspectives as the book unfolds. Well written and engaging, I could barely put the book down for the last two-thirds.

In terms of heat, the sex between the main protagonists were pretty steamy, but it was the emotional aspect of their feelings that had the real magnetic draw. Both men long for something more permanent in their lives, and neither believes he can have it. That inner battle of knowing what the heart wants but listening to what the head says plays out masterfully in this story.

All in all, a great read. I definitely plan on going back and reading the stories preceding this one.

This is book 11 in series but can be read as a standalone.
Viktor is in trouble and reeling: his precious younger sister just came into possession of an old artifact. The trouble is, the artifact can be used as a weapon which puts Viktor and his loved ones into crosshairs of two warring factions: Agency and Knights. Viktor likes neither. He is loath to involve himself into their conflict and as a shifter he is aware of war they wage, but had always tried to keep himself on sidelines.
Pan, on the other hand, is directly involved: he belongs to Agency and they work to protect shifters and dismantle and thwart Knights.

The first scene with the Knights convinced me they are bad guys. Before Pan and Viktor met they both harbor preconceived notions about each other. What they don't know is that they have already met: They had a fling two years ago. Both of them are intrigued by possibilities, but neither wants to give up on what he sees as his duty. This puts them into opposite corners of the fight at least in the beginning.

The plot frankly seemed a little far fetched to me but I was interested in Pan and Viktor enough to ignore plot holes. Their connection is vibrant and true and holds the story together. The story contains very well written and emotionally intense scenes.
Despite good sides to this story I just couldn't engage and wasn't compelled to keep reading. It's a good story for lovers of shifter books but it simply didn't hold my interest.

4 stars. Revised Edition.
A great story to include Viktor, Natasha and Agent Pan on a mission to keep the scrolls safe with others involved.
Not a good first re-meet for Viktor and Pan as their past hookup 3 yrs ago surfaces again.
Includes hawk shilfter, fated mates, telepathic, dramas and dangers and more.
A good ending to the book with some drama scenes but all ends well for Pan and Viktor. The scroll is not where it should be..which continues that part of the story.

Kirk worked for the Knights and had an assignment watching for 2 agents and to report to HQ to what they'd seen.
Viktor was trying to help his sister and her love be safe after finding a scroll for the bird shifters.
Enter.. Agent Pan and his partner do anything to protect the scroll but Pan and Viktor have a past weekend together.

There are 5 parts to the overall story and only 2 ( The Beginning and Scrolls) are out so far, which include 12 books - about 20 books will be in the total (see author's website for complete listing).

I have read them 2x now as more books have come out. Each book has it's own story but there is a back story that threads throughout them - I will wait until all the parts come out now to be able to complete the overall story before reading again.

Also, the next time I read the series, I will read it in chronological order of the stories, not in the order they were written. You can do either, but the books from earlier times tell the deeper underlining story of the scrolls, which is what keeps the series going since each book has it's own HEA.
