How do you help kids understand that even though we have many physical differences, we are all human beings who are more alike than different? This colorful and engaging children’s book follows Kali, an intuitive young black girl with amazing hair and glasses, as she notices a variety of skin tones, hair, eyes, nose, lips, ears, body, blood and even love. What does she discover? No matter the features we have on display, we all are the same in a different way!
An absolutely beautiful book that needs to be on all bookshelves and in every elementary classroom. "We Are The Same in a Different Way" puts attention on our differences while sharing why they are all beautiful and unique. This book is a perfect springboard to talk about things such as a cleft lip, cochlear implant, skin tones/shades/moles/birthmarks, hair textures, body size/shape, physical abilities and supports needed, blood types and giving blood, family dynamics both traditional and blended. Renee Ecckles-Hardy beautifully allows for all children to find themselves in this book.
This story was beautifully written with pictures that matched that beauty. I was pleased to see the story didn't focus only on our physical differences, but little differences like our reddened noses during allergy season. That part was my favorite. It made the story fun and relatable for everyone. My son and I really love this story and enjoy sharing it with others.
