When three friends decide to throw caution to the wind, quit their full time jobs and travel through Europe for six months, they visualised an adventure they would never forget. And they weren't wrong! More than three decades later, they were still gas-bagging about the absurd situations they found themselves in. From Brisbane to London via the Greek Islands and other intoxicating European countries to boot, their looming escapade would become the topic of conversation for the rest of their lives. Chained to their dreary office desks since school, Brooke, Claire and Lucy had finally had enough of the corporate world. Existing like caged birds Monday to Friday was no longer an option. It was time for them to spread their dormant wings and take flight. Two Geminis and a Capricorn made an interesting travel combination, but when you’re friends till the end, it doesn’t matter what star sign you are, unless of course you’re a Capricorn with Cancer rising and decide to give it all away in Venice, because you fear for your life. The road to Utopia was never meant to be easy, but when you’re filled with hopes and dreams, who cares if you meet some oddballs along the way? From Greek Gods to Italian models. From a repulsive sex crazed Yugoslavian taxi driver, to an irresistible Serbian ex-con. From brushes with the Police in Venice to French thieves on the Metro in Paris, not to mention more than a few shady characters in between, this would certainly be a trip they would never forget. So if you’re looking for fun under the European sun, not to mention some unabashed sex and romance to spice up your every day life, grab your passport, book a ticket and join us on our trip of a lifetime.
I received this book to read for free to write a review on OnlineBookClub. The author L.A. Florrie wrote this as a memoir of a vacation she took with some friends in 1988. The friends live in Australia along the Gold Coast. They have been working and saving for a 6 month vacation. Although, they do not have enough money to fund their entire vacation, they plan to spend several months in London working temp jobs in order to purchase their return tickets home. The author and her friends are unapologetically lustful. They travel to Greece and seek lovers. They go to nightclubs, the beach, and enjoy all that Greece has to offer. They run into some trouble when they decide on a whim to take a train to Skopje (Yugoslavia). Lucy is accosted by the taxi driver soon after their arrival. They have difficulties getting on the train out of there. It's as if the men there dislike them and are purposely trying to detain them. On to Venice, more trouble when they meet 3 Italian police officers. 3 becomes 2 when Claire has decided she has had enough bad experiences and wants to cut her vacation short to visit her sister in Norway. Lucy and Brooke manage to have a nice time in Austria where Lucy has 2 lovers. They are out of money and trying to hitchhike to London. They find more trouble in Paris where Brooke's passport and wallet are stolen at the train station as soon as they arrive in Paris. They finally make their way to London where Lucy stays with a friend and works a temp job for 4 months before she returns home to Australia. Brooke runs into more trouble looking for work with a former employer. With only a temp passport she returns home early. The way these women took in lovers made me blush. They have a love of life and having fun sex with random men they meet that I cannot fathom. The author did not let the experiences where she was assaulted ruin her vacation. The 80s were a decade like no other. This book has a light fun side, and a dark side. Men saw these women as being vulnerable and alone and tried to take advantage of them. At other times the ladies were out seeking free alcohol and a memorable night of sex. I enjoyed reading the descriptions of the locations the author and her friends visited. But I would probably not recommend this book to any of my friends.
I enjoyed the descriptive inner thoughts of Lucy's escapades. I recommend this book to anybody looking for a few moments of romantic bliss and a nice fun read.
