One of the few practising doctors in India who contributed to research, education and charity in such a large measure, the book documents the fundamentals of what makes a person achieve meaningful success. While hard work, passion and focus emerge as winning lessons, delicate and tender learnings from Dr Mohan's life, such as empathy or spirituality, are not forgotten.
Written in Dr Mohan's sagacious and affable voice, and peppered with examples of his bold and unusual ideas such as planning a diabetes expo or conducting a country-wide diabetes study, this book is a behind-the-scenes account of a person honoured internationally for delivering path-breaking care to hundreds of thousands of people with diabetes.
Making Excellence A Habit by Dr. V. Mohan is a book which talks about building a world class Healthcare system in India. Dr. V. Mohan is one of the few practicing doctors in India Who has contributed to research, education and charity in the medical field.
Dr. V. Mohan is one of the India's best Diabetologist. The book accounts for his medical journey across these years. The book talks about his failures as well as his achievements. The author has also talked about his journey from his childhood learnings to being the best in the field.
The book talks about his success mantra as well as the book consists of best quotes written by some great leaders. It's a perfect blend of leadership mantra and medical learnings. It's a very easy read for both medical background readers as well as non medical readers. The author has a very natural writing skill and the book truly shows it.
The flow of the book is very easy as well as very informative without leaving anything important, but at the same time does not bombard the readers with a lot of information. The right kind of examples makes the concepts of failures, focus and leadership very easy to understand and quickly grasp.
If God does not give us something that we asked for, it is only because he felt that we are better off without it or that it is in our best interest not to get it at that time. Years later we ourselves realise why he did not answer that prayer and we will in fact thank him for it.
Making excellence a habit : The secret to building a world-class healthcare system in India does not only focus on taking care of our body but also focuses on the value that we should adapt to strive everyday for excellence and achieve our dreams. This book personally was very much interesting because it made me believe that with hard-work and persistence and good intentions one can actually fulfil their dreams.
Dr. V Mohan who is India’s leading diabetologist shares with us how certain values and morale kept him going in his field and how it certainly brought about a change not only in his life but also in lives of his patients. He also mentioned the lessons he has learned from his patients and has shared with us short stories and experiences.
He teaches us through this book that passion is what will take us ahead and being loyal to passion will not only bring about positivity in our lives but will also bring about a positivity in the lives of people around us.
I truly appreciate him for what he has done for the people who suffer through diabetes and how he has come up with the centres and organisations that help diabetic people to overcome their diabetes and live a healthy life with their loved ones.
Dr. V. Mohan- a leading diabetologist in India, a dedicated researcher, a renowned scientist, a teacher, an efficient administrator, and a successful entrepreneur is the living definition of success on many counts.
Through this book, he takes us through the journey of becoming an international authority on the subject of Diabetes.
Coming from a family of doctors, he was naturally inclined to the medical profession.
However, it was pure hard-work and dedicated focus that made him achieve a Doctorate of Science degree in one month. (Being a scholar myself, I am so inspired after reading this)
He also highlights the power of passion, grit, determination, meditation, and manifestation in bringing one closer to their goals through dedicated focus.
🍁My views: 🍁
The book is filled with a lot of examples describing how bold and unusual ideas made him successful and different.
My favorite one was his solution to the problem of the brain- drain in which he helped to develop a model whereby US faculty came to teach India, instead of Indian students going to the US or other foreign countries for education, thus enabling a reverse brain-drain situation.
The book is aptly titled "Making excellence a habit" as illustrated in one of the chapters where the author shares that from seeing a patient to writing a research paper or making a presentation, he always looked at it as a work of art and strived for excellence in all his endeavors. ( Being a perfectionist, I know what he exactly meant)
But as he rightly points out, Excellence is like a mirage, the moment we feel like we have achieved it, it keeps shifting the goal-posts, this we need to make it a Habit.
👉I loved reading this autobiography and would highly recommend this to anyone and everyone interested in the field of research, health, or life- learnings from an excellent human being- Dr. V. Mohan.
Making Excellence A Habit By Dr. V. Mohan Dr. V. Mohan is a diabetologist who did remarkable research in the field of Diabetes. Dr. Mohan established one of the largest chains of diabetes centers in the world. Through this book, he shared his life experiences as a student, doctor, researcher, and teacher. When I picked up this book, I thought this is full of medical terms or science, but this book stores something for everyone irrespective of their field. In my opinion, this is the most honest biography I've ever read. Dr. Mohan shares his journey from a doctor to an entrepreneur and how spirituality and positive thinking helped him during his tough times when he lost his wife. He wrote all about his life and work very sincerely, I'm sure that inspires many of us to dream big and give our 100% to fulfill them. This book turned out to be an inspirational and motivational read for me and an excellent example of creating a world-class healthcare system through hard work and passion. This book is a must-read for all young doctors and medical students, hope it encourages them to do something for society.
A country's success and progress is dependent majorly on three factors: its defense mechanism, the robustness of its health infrastructure and education level of its citizens. Out of these three ,health is arguably the most important parameter because if a major chunk of people are not up to the mark physically or mentally a nation can never think of developing.
The novel is built around the same theme. It talks about how we can strengthen the overall healthcare system in our country through the real life examples from author's own life. How through sheer perseverance and lazor sharp focus one can achieve every single thing is artistically presented.
The most highlighting feature of the book is instead of using jargons related to medical terms which could have made this work catering to the requirements of a specific segment of readers only ,the language employed is quite reader friendly. Besides this the cover is exhilarating and it infuses a sense of enthusiasm till you reach the last page.
To read such an inspirational account of a stalwart like Dr V. Mohan is an enriching experience altogether.
I thoroughly enjoyed the first part of the book, the author has not refrained from sharing with us his hesitation of entering into the field of medicine. His poem “Living with the Dead” is like an unedited unfiltered uncensored summary of his yesteryear which later took a 360 degrees turn making him a role model for many. Also the narrative of his time at Medical school, family background, first love, and so much more is nothing short of entertainment for a reader with food for thought.
Diabetes also at times referred to as a lifestyle disorder has become very prevalent in India. The authors exemplary distinguished work in the field of diabetes in India and other countries has won him many accolades locally & internationally. While going through the various accounts of his life I just felt amazed at his adroitness inspite of the ups & downs. His humbleness to attribute his quest for success to his peers was something that touched me personally.
What made this book more engaging for me other than the engrossing account of his journey is the authors love for english literature, writing & reading. He has shared his poetry as well in bits & pieces during the narrative they are heartening. The beginning of every chapter with an awe-inspiring title further was another feather in the cap. This is definitely a book I would recommend to one all. If you like to read about people who have excelled and made a difference in our world this is one such book surely.
BOOK REVIEW BOOK - " Making excellence a habit " AUTHOR - " DR V. Mohan " GENRE - " Autobiography, Non-Fiction "
The title " Making excellence a habit " piqued me and I had a question running in my mind. What can one possibly learn from a doctor ? I was reluctant to read this book and kept it aside to not be burdened by the medical jargon which would be cumbersome for a layman like me. But my preconceived notions were squashed when I picked this book last night. Not only was it interesting but I couldn't put the book down.
This is the journey of Dr.V Mohan who is a recipient of Padma shri for his contribution to the field of medicine and his relentless passion to spread awareness about diabetes and its diagnosis in India.
He is truly a trailblazer when it comes to research on diabetes not only in India but on the international scale. Having been awarded and recognised internationally, his prime goal is to further teach every nook and corner of India and help the impoverished and others to get quality treatment.
This book penned by him captures his journey from his school days , to his time in Madras medical college and his studies abroad in London. He impeccably reminisces his childhood instances and the impact it had on his choices later in life. When his passion for writing and his fathers guidance to become a doctor were clashing , he was smart enough to crave a mid path which could satisfy both the desires.
This kickstarter his journey as a medical researcher in diabetology. Not only did he immerse himself in research but was proactive to dive deep into analysing several issues unknown in the world of diabetes.
Even after receiving a medical degree, the path to success was brindled with financial contrains and challenges. This didnt stop them ( his beloved wife Dr.Rema ) to strive hard to make their dreams a reality.
Dr. V. Mohan shared several case studies and success stories of grit and a positive attitude. He emphasised on the importance of passion, resilience and hardwork. His integrity in his life and a believer in team work and collaborations have left a mark on my mind.
After having completed the book, my notions of picking this book have been completely quashed. I hope to inculcate several lessons in learnt and hope to rub of some passion and magic of serendipity which Dr.V Mohan so firmly believed it.
Dr V. Mohan's Making Excellence A Habit is an inspiring biographical testimony to become India's Padma Shree award-winning leading diabetologist. Dr Mohan starts his tale with his medical college days where he decides that scientific research is his main forte and ends it with an heart-rending finale to his pinnacle of achievements.
The author's extraordinary interest in diabetes and spreading awareness about diabetes in India takes the focal point in the book. He uses his keenness to address how he drives his passion into a big success. He talks about his determination, his resilience, his dedication, and most importantly - his setbacks, that finally helped him achieve what he wanted. Dr Mohan's humble yet powerful success story is motivational to the ones who are ready to attain their goals no matter what happens.
Dr Mohan not only gives is his inputs on how to lead a successful life, but all also gives us a view into the world of scientific research, paper publishing, and higher academics in India. He talks about the struggles he faced as a young researcher during a time when the internet was not a sensation and the only way to rely on past publications was to visit the library. His path to found ICMR-INDIAB (Indian Council of Medical Research-India Diabetes) to study the prevalence and predictability of diabetes on India is mammoth feat and ever-inspiring.
Success and our dreams demand a lot of struggles and failures from us and if we keep working hard then there will be a day when success will run behind us to kiss our feet. . This book is a motivational and self-help book where the author has talked about his journey from just being a doctor to making his dream of opening a hospital. . Dr. V. Mohan and his wife Dr. Rema had a dream to open their hospital but it wasn't easy at all. Being a doctor, having your hospital is the dream of all but making it come true is the hard deal. . In this book, Dr. Mohan has discussed deeply his struggles and failures. He takes you on his journey to let you know that success will require sacrifices but if you keep doing hard work and make it a habit then no one can stop you from achieving your goals. . Honestly, this book is beyond any appreciation. I feel very motivated to do hard work for my dreams after reading this book. This book has fueled me to start my race towards my goals. Go and pick this book to start your next level journey
An inspiring book that tells about his journey as a Diabetologist. It documents the fundamentals of what makes a person achieve meaningful success.
It's a well-detailed book filled with his experience in this field. Right from his dream to his career choice, to the change in the field, everything is wonderfully expressed. I loved the way his bond with his father is expressed.
With a crisp and engaging writing style, it's a motivating and inspiring book that reveals what success costs and how can we be successful. It's a journey of determination, dedication, sleepless nights and failures that made him what he is today.

The author is not only a diabetologist but also a good poet. He has shared some pieces of his poetry which were very nice.
Part-memoir and part-manifesto for inspired living, “Making Excellence a Habit” is one man or rather one determined family’s unrelenting crusade to prevent and treat diabetes. Dr.V.Mohan started out with his wife Rema Mohan in an unassuming fashion in 1991 on a mission. Egged on by borrowed funds and benevolent well wishers the couple faced insurmountable hurdles ranging from a scheming landlord to a most unsuitable location in which to begin a dedicated medical facility for the treatment of diabetic patients. Undeterred they persuaded, ploughed away, and persisted. At the time of writing this review, Dr. Mohan’s Group is one of the largest chains of diabetes centres in the world, comprising 48 branches spanning eight states and spread across thirty two cities all over India. This Group has treated to the north of 900,000 patients and is also the collaboration centre for World Health Organization on Non Communicable Diseases Prevention and Control.
Dr. Mohan’s capabilities and renown transcends geographies. In the year 2018, the American Diabetes Association conferred the 2018 Dr Harold Rifkin Award for Distinguished International Service in the Cause of Diabetes on Dr Mohan. As on date, he remains the only Indian to have been the beneficiary of this august honour. As the diabetologist chronicles in the early part of his book, his ambition was more to follow in the aesthetic footsteps of Shelley and Wordsworth than in wielding a stethoscope or a scalpel. However an enviable pedigree and an engrossing opportunity put paid to such hopes. Dr. Mohan’s father Professor M. Viswanathan is popularly referred to as the “father of diabetology” in India. He was the first medical professional in the nation channel all his efforts in furiously dissecting diabetes to its minutest level with an avowed objective of serving the Indian populace plagued with this silent killer. He soon took the enterprising Dr. Mohan under his tutelage and the father son duo tackled the onset and progression of this disease with a maniacal rigour. “By the time I had completed my undergraduate medical education, I had already written twenty research papers. As our economic standing improved, I also started travelling with my father—initially, around the country and, soon, all around the world. This exposed me to the work done on diabetes at various research centres and universities, nationally and internationally. Needless to say, my self-confidence got a huge boost.”
But as Dr. Mohan demonstrates in a telling manner, nothing comes in life on a platter. Grit, guts, and gumption are indispensable handmaidens of success. This is the very grit that has ensured that this famed practioner has penned more than 1300 peer reviewed research papers in the field of diabetology. A devout man, the doctor is also an ardent follower of Bhagawan Sathya Sai Baba, the popular spiritual Guru. The author’s twin-pronged belief in prayer and the power of positive thinking is articulated in a Chapter where a patient through unflagging will power and persistent prayers successfully brings down his blood sugar levels from an alarming number to a perfectly “manageable” number.
Dr. Mohan also pays a moving and heartfelt tribute to his late wife Dr. Rema Mohan. A specialist in diabetic retinopathy herself, Rema was a pillar of strength and succour in the life of Dr. Mohan. Working with an indefatigable fervour in the running and embellishment of Dr. Mohan’s Specialist Diabetes Centre she was the epitome of encouragement and optimism. Even when beset by cancer and undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy, she continued to work from home. “It was during this difficult period that she wrote her PhD thesis and eventually became the first ophthalmologist in India to obtain a PhD degree. Although a clinician, Rema did basic research on the biochemistry of diabetic eye disease, which was most unusual for an ophthalmologist.”
Dr. Mohan throughout the book displays his penchant for literature and an insatiable love of books. Deriving inspiration from both spiritual and scientific authors, he co-relates many incidents from his own life with passages from various books. Dr. Mohan also illuminates his readers on the valuable lessons one can learn from failures and setbacks. Many branches of Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Centres were shut down in various cities (one Centre was unsuccessful after incurring huge expenses in Muscat even) on account of various factors and as Dr. Mohan humbly states, each failure was a lesson that collectively warned him about the perils of spreading oneself thin.
Dr. Mohan also places invaluable emphasis on the need for inculcating an altruistic bent. His Group approached the World Diabetes Foundation (WDF) in Denmark and requested their support in establishing a telemedicine unit. With the support of the WDF, Dr. Mohan and his Group fabricated, from scratch, a mobile diabetes clinic, the first of its kind, fitted with all the equipment needed to screen for diabetes and its complications. The Indian Space Research Organization donated a satellite link, which was fitted on the bus. This enabled the images in real time, to be sent, from the van to a base hospital in Gopalapuram in Chennai. Quoting “The Psychology of Persuasion” by bestselling author Robert B. Cialdini, Dr. Mohan goads his reader to ‘start by taking the smallest possible action towards your goal and then leverage that commitment to motivate yourself to do more.’
As Dr.Mohan educates his readers, the pernicious yet burgeoning incidence of child obesity also contributes immensely to an upsurge in diabetes. With a view to nip child obesity in the bud, Dr. Mohan commenced a vast programme to prevent obesity in children. “Through the Obesity Reduction and Awareness and Screening of Noncommunicable Diseases through Group Education in Children and Adolescents (or ORANGE) project, we reached out to 22,000 children in over 100 schools in Chennai, both government and private, where we taught them the importance of healthy eating, physical exercise and the overall need to prevent or treat obesity. The project was a huge success and led to an improvement in the lifestyles and health of thousands of children. One can practice the prevention of diabetes.”
“Making Excellence a Habit” is a passionate quasi-autobiography that illustrates the power of determination, devotion, dedication, and discipline. It would not be out of place to state to conclude that Dr. Mohan seems to lead his life uncompromisingly based on one of the favourite quotes of his spiritual preceptor, Sri Sathya Sai Baba, “hands that help are holier than the lips that pray.”
"i was overcome with a great desire to know for myself, and to share; to let people know what had worked for me, and what hadn't, so that those with similar dreams, or those who maybe embarking on a journey similar to the one that started for me over forty years ago, could find strength and solace in my story."
"to when it all began: with dreams of poetry, not medicine."
The Secret To Building A World-Class Healthcare System In India MAKING EXCELLENCE A HABIT by Dr. V. Mohan @penguinrandomhouse @penguinindia
Wow, i am in awe of Dr. Mohan as a writer, an author who has penned this book so beautifully. It's very very engaging, to say the least. I wasn't expecting it to be such a page turner to be honest.
It has beautiful poetic quotes, and is in a very simple but relatable story format that one gets engrossed listening, yes listening to Dr. Mohan narrate his story. That fully explains how his childhood love for Eng literature & poetry & his desire to become a writer has flourished & mapped out surprisingly well in this book.
His father had earned the title of "father of diabetology" in India & he, very earnestly & cleverly had sown the seed of scientific research in diabeties in the 14 year old boy who later became The Dr. V Mohan.
Lessons i learnt; - the company one keeps definately helps one succeed. - you can always let go & start over. - grab every opportunity you have. - focus. Ask yourself, what is it that you want to achieve over the next five , ten or fifteen years? - resilience. It's never too late to serve others. - work on creating trust, empathy & encouragement. - dare to dream big & begin. - passion is the key to success. - by sharing knowledge you also grow in the process. - don't cry over spilt milk & look at failure in the eye. - seek people who recharge your batteries & refrain from energy vampires. - collaboration is powerful than being alone. - don't make promises you can't keep. - there's no substitute for hardwork. - stress can exaggerate health & other problems.
These are just few of the lessons i enjoyed reading. The glossy coloured pictures are inspiring & i loved the epilogue. An amazingly written book.
Making Excellence A Habit: The Secret to Building a World-Class Healthcare System in India by Dr. V. Mohan is an autobiography & let me make this clear before going any further that while it may seem that this book is just going to be about medicine and healthcare, it’s not. Son to Professor M. Viswanathan who is often referred to as the “Father of Diabetology in India”, Mohan had to follow his father’s path & as well as make his own place in this world. Having realized how diabetes is the silent killer for Indian population he along with his late wife, Dr. Rema Mohan they opened a hospital solely for diabetic patients in 1991. Slowly and steadily working towards his ultimate goal with help from his close ones & well-wishers, now Dr. Mohan’s medical facilities for diabetic patients spans to 32 cities in eight states. Even though written by a scholar, this book’s language is reader-friendly what I mean by that is this book is written for everyone, not just for those interested in scholarly work. Dr. Mohan’s dedication towards his work & the hard work he had put in to achieve his goal should be a guiding force for every single one of us. An important book which I would suggest everyone to pick up.
Making Excellence A Habit is an autobiography of Dr. Mohan, India's best diabetologist. He has shared his journey of how he became expert in this field. He has shared his experiences and journey with which he got sucess. In this book,he has talked about everything from his childhood to this date and even discussed his failure. His journey is indeed motivating where he shared everything very honestly. He himself wasn't capable of opening diabetes center (DMDSC) but his patient who was totally unknown helped him and then rest is history. DMDSC is India's best diabetes center which is not only in India but have other branches in rest of the world. This book is, no doubt, very thought-provoking and well researched, informative and inspiring read. The writing style of the author was also easy, smooth and intriguing. One can also easily read and enjoy this wonderful book even if they aren't from the medical field. Author has given many examples in between the chapters which are thorough and can make readers think in the depth of it. There are also many quotes and poems in between the chapters by the great leaders. I would definitely love to recommend this book to other readers.
Reaching what we individually consider as a success "point" requires an immense amount of determination with the same amount of "perseveranced" attitude. We definitely does not reach that point in a speck of time, and during that slow moving time duration, we meet with a hell lot of failures which even have the power to make us quit. And in such conditions the only thing that will make us motivate ourselves are the thoughts of why we had such a dream in the first place, as simple as that, LOL. . In a way this is exactly what the book tries to convey to all its readers. Dr V Mohan is truly an inspiration to all of us to get motivated and start our journey towards what we consider as our success. Simple and lucid writing style definitely make the readers to continue in the same pace from the beginning to the end. The word diabetes which is in the modern era an ultimately common word among us humans have great depth and layers which requires a great amount of research. Dr V Mohan has done a splendid job in the field of diabetes literally with his entire life and that particular life is beautifully portrayed by the true hero himself through the book, MAKING EXCELLENCE A HABIT. . HAPPY READING 💫
“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” – Will Durant
‘Making Excellence A Habit’ is the documentation of the life of Dr. V. Mohan, one of the leading diabetologists of India, in his own witty and affable style. Penning down his journey from the very beginning, Dr. Mohan takes us through his childhood and through the time when the initial curiosities of his – both in literature as well as research - were met with recognition and motivation.
Dr. Mohan’s venture as a diabetologist and researcher had ample instances to make one realize the sheer magnitude of his perseverance and his readiness to push his boundaries for greater achievements. His story is an example of what a person is capable of achieving if they set their minds to it and are prepared for the hardships and sacrifices that come along.
Reading this book was an empowering journey in itself that taught me about so many values and principles in one of the most authentic and simplistic ways possible. On top of that, I also gathered some substantial ideas about diabetes, for which I am truly grateful. I appreciate the fact that Dr. Mohan has shared not only his professional life but has also given glimpses into his personal life that included his spiritual journey as well as his ever-growing love for writing. I really enjoyed the excerpts of his poems added in the book.
In the end, I would really like to express my sincere gratitude towards Dr. Mohan for everything that he has done or is still doing in the field of diabetes and also for penning down this impactful account of his life.

Dr V. Mohan's book Making Excellence A Habit is all about the Secret to build a World-Class Healthcare system in our country India
Here in this book we get an opportunity to know the life lessons from his real life experiences. Coming directly from a medical professional who has contributed a lot in the field through researches. What made his journey towards his dreams, a success? What are his thoughts on life? The bits of advices this book has for young generation about getting inspired from another successful person who contributed ground breaking results in medical system for hundreds of patients and shares about how to stand strong, believe in your self, brush up your skills and knowledge, remain resilient, have inner strength, fight doubt, dream big, etc where he shares from his own experiences , and shares his life changing moments and pictures with emminent personalities with thought provoking ideas, as such makes this book a really purposeful one.
Among the recent books that I have read during the pandemic, ‘Making Excellence a Habit’ by Padmashri Dr. V Mohan has been one of the most engaging and enlightening experiences I have had. If one visualises a doctor, researcher, educationist and a philanthropist who built India’s first chain of world-class diabetic care centres as being a nerd and a serious person, and whose book would probably be academic, Dr. Mohan springs a pleasant surprise! But it is no wonder because Dr. Mohan’s intrinsic interest in literature and poetry is reflected throughout the book, making it immensely readable and engaging, even in parts where he talks about medicine and research.
In the midst of an array of innumerable books, even award winning ones, which woefully lack good presentation and correct grammar and are replete with countless proofing errors, I would begin by appreciating the presentation, which is well-structured and has a remarkable style that only seasoned authors possess. The chapter titles are arresting and the quotes at the beginning of each chapter have been carefully chosen, reflecting the essence of what the chapter would deal with. I would rate Making Excellence a Habit as one of the finest treatises of inspirational nature that can motivate anyone to be hopeful, despite failures or obstacles, urging people to be passionate, and give their best under any circumstance. This is the story of a young, ambitious but sensitive boy who began his school years as a romantic, much in love with literature whom destiny propelled toward a path of research and medicine, which he embraced with dignity and diligence. The journey of Dr. Mohan in the field of medicine and research has been laid out before the readers in a very arresting manner, interspersed with motivational anecdotes and candid revelation of emotions and introspection, belonging to a very evolved and enlightened mind. I may not be a great believer, but even I was moved by his chapters on spiritualism, and the power of the subconscious mind. I was totally inspired by the chapter on the power of positive thinking in healing, which can be applied to achievement of any goal in one’s life. Of course, the book offers its sombre moments to the reader who happens to be a sentimental person like me, and I quietly wiped of tears on reading how his much loved wife Dr. Rema continued to work with great commitment till her end and ensured that she would leave an impeccable legacy for the teams of their centre to follow. Dr. Mohan unveils his journey toward building a chain of diabetic centres, his global contribution through research, presentations in conferences and publications which abound in challenges at every step of the way. Chance meetings with people who happened to give a fillip to his vision, arduous toil to the point of being a workaholic throughout his life, collaboration with his teams and people who share a similar vision as well as drawing of inferences from the lives of other achievers are all blended into the story seamlessly. The inspiring takeaway for a reader is how he reasons, rationalises and attributes logic to every development, challenge and milestone in his journey. His love for his family and the mutual love and respect the family shares form a strong foundation from which he seems to draw his strength and energy. Everyone makes mistakes, but it is a strong mind that acknowledges the lapses, introspects and takes corrective steps. I was moved by the fact that even after several years, Dr. Mohan is able to recall mistakes he had made inadvertently and has the integrity to lay down threadbare for people to read, which only an evolved person can do. I have read books by other doctors such as ‘When Breathe Becomes Air, a non-fiction autobiographical book by American neurosurgeon Paul Kalanithi that was published posthumously and ‘The Checklist Manifesto’ by Atul Gawande which outlines the importance of a checklist in mastering tasks in a very interesting manner. These books are immensely readable too. But ‘Making Excellence a Habit’ surpasses the genre as well as the non-fiction tag in that it is one book that will find a place in the heart of any reader globally, extending beyond cultural boundaries and nations. Because it is an honest account of a doctor who harboured dreams, chased his passion adopting gruelling schedules and toil as the only means to achievement, and moved ahead in a journey with positivism, introspecting and finding meaning in every incident, event or person who touched his life. Every reader can connect with this book and be truly inspired to better himself in his chosen life path.

As it's shares the story of something which started as a dream of Dr. Mohan, but ended up becoming a reality. He has shared each of his life journey in this book, whether it was a failure of his new clinic or the set back he achieved while completing his journey as a doctor, he has told us about every important moment of his life in this book. Not only that, he has also shared the ideas and tips which he followed during his struggle days and he also has given his opinions about them whether following that idea was a mistake for him or a step forward towards his dream. 2. The Narration -: The book is divided into several different chapters, each of which start with a quote. The narration was fluid and felt very connecting to me because while reading you'll see that writer has used different different styles in the presentation of chapters. Usually i don't like the changement in the narration of book as many times in doing so the book loses its pace and a connection with the reader and it becomes more and more confusing but TBH i was very comfortable with this one in fact i loved how author has used the presentation styles of diffrent different Indian authors which also showcase his love towards books.
3. The Language -: The language used in the book was very easy and understandable without any issues. Although i don't know anything about medical terms yet i was able to understand them through simple explanation presented in the book. All of this because of fluid narration & easy to understand language.
Final Thoughts -: I had a great time reading an Autobiography like this. I've not read many autobiographies but for this one i can surely say that, this is a perfect guide book for each one of us. Whether you are an Engineer or a Doctor you should read this one. As it's shows the becoming of a common man into Someone Which he has dream about all of which was achieved through his hardships. Definitely Recommend.

Amazing! This was my first reaction after I finished reading Dr. V. Mohan's 'Making Excellence A Habit'. I fell in love with this book while reading it, after reading it and even now I'm processing. People like Dr. V. Mohan makes you believe in hard work. He assures to all his readers that struggles and barriers while achieving your goal is just a part of that long journey for which we have already given our first step. Now, keep working, and you will reach there soon. . Dr. V. Mohan is a renowned diabetologist specialist in India. He and his late wife Dr. Rema Mohan had an ambition to start their own hospital and so after years of hard work came into reality Dr. Mohan's Group of Diabetes Institution. His group of diabetes institution includes Dr. Mohan's Diabetes Specialist Centre (hospital wing), Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (research wing) and Dr. Mohan's Diabetes Education Academy (education wing). This book is about the hard work that he and his wife had to bear to achieve their desired milestone. At the initial stage many times Dr. Mohan was on the verge of quitting his professional studies, but his father's words never let him step down making the headway to his achievement successful. . The student section of Dr. Mohan's life is very relatable for me. And I think that's not the case only with me, but many of you who has read this book can relate to part of 'almost on the verge of quitting the chosen subject of study', but at the end falling in love with it. Dr. Mohan is such a soothing writer. There was nothing pretence in his language. It was simple and lucid. . This book is like a box full of surprises that Dr. Mohan has designed adding a lot of motivations and inspiration it . He's inspiring us with his remarkable story of success. Honestly this book makes me want to work better for my dream. Sometimes we might think that we have worked hard enough. We can't bear it anymore. Feeling disappointed and dejected we return back from the journey not knowing the steps towards success that we are already progressing to. This book will make you believe that every bit of your hard work won't go in vain when you are investing it in the right direction. It takes time. Sometimes a lot than expected, but patience and determination can make it to your goal. . Thanks to the author for writing this inspiring book and making me feel motivated. 'Making Excellence A Habit' is a must recommendation to all the people out there. And this Corona period is best to read this nonfiction to boast your dying motivation.

from page 1 To 194, there was not an single chapter or page where i left it should not be included or it was boring. Authors elabrotes How his father motivated him to take up mbbs and further do research in diabetes.
Author lies many examples of people who had suffered worst but they never gave up. Such example is the life of Abebe Bikila who became the first person to win Olympic marathon twice But unfortunately he met with an accident due to which he lost all movements in this Body but he didn't Gave up and picked another sport, archery and he went to become an archery champion.
If I was told to pick my favorite chapter then I would definitely choose Chapter 26- The power of the subconsious mind & chapter 32- true love is external.
In chapter 26, author talks about subconscious mind. How he was able to understand the power of our mind and thinking positive can help our body.
favorite quote- "The subconscious mind faithfully listens to the thoughts that are fed to it by the conscious mind. And so feeding it positive thoughts about health, love and peace can help normalize body functions"
In chapter 32, author talks about love and supernatural stuff. This chapter literally gave me goosebumps.
( I don't know if the below sentences can be consider as spoiler. So READ AT YOUR OWN RISK)

But author's wife, rema told him "Mohan, you will get the Padma Shri next year, and although I will not be there physically, I will somehow let you know that I am aware of you getting the award". after some months his wife passed away. Making Excellence a Habit is the memoir of Dr V. Mohan, one of India’s well known Diabetologist and Padma Shri award winner, narrated by himself. The book starts with a brief introduction of how and when this book idea started and hence moving onto his early childhood days, the reason for becoming a doctor after dreaming for the longest time to become a writer, educational journey and setting up one of the largest chains of diabetes centers in the world.
The book is written in a wholesome way, covering Dr. Mohan’s personal life, professional journey, research activity, approach towards diabetes, his values and what really helped his five decade long successful journey. The book is divided into 32 chapters with each of them starting with a quote by a famous personality, followed by Dr. Mohan explaining one topic that is picked for each chapter. The book also includes few poems and musings written by the doctor.
While autobiographies and memoirs can get tedious and remain as documented accounts of someone’s life, this book stands out with narration style which is simple, engaging and connects instantly with the reader. The book also has interesting accounts, even of few patients that Dr. Mohan treated over the years. The contribution of Dr. Mohan to research, his passion towards the field of diabetes, are well captured in the book.
The book also makes for a good read for those who have people suffering from diabetes in their family or those curious to read more around the topic. What I loved personally is, along with all the aspects we generally find in any successful personality’s life, Dr. Mohan includes the significant role of integrity and spirituality in his life.
Pick this one to read about the life of one of the most successful doctors in contemporary India, to read about the journey of Dr. Mohan along with his life lessons and values that made him the person he is today.
"Peer pressure or, simply the company one keeps, definitely helps one succeed. And it was certainly the excellence I saw all around that pushed me to aspire for the pinacle of success in medicine and research." . Dr V. Mohan is one of the renowned Indian Diabetologists and an awardee of the prestigious Padma Shri along with several other global recognitions. . This book is a journey of a curious mind towards a greater cause and a life worth praising for. Little did I knew before starting this book, that I would be venturing into a life of someone whose selfless contribution towards humanity, consistent hardwork and honesty would bring back the lost smiles. Dr. Mohan started his early career as a practitioner and widened his skills as a researcher, scientist, entrepreneur and always a teacher. His unending passion towards literature/writing and research allowed him to publish around 20 papers before he could graduate from MBBS. His firm determination, aided by his Diabetologist father and challenging nature took him to where he stands now. It's obvious, the readers and the people around would draw inspiration from his life's path, but all I could conclude is that the initial spark is always internal. It's always the passion to do something purposeful that would lead you towards your goal. The inspiration is simply the catalyst which acts the way you guide it to be. One of the appreciating factor I found in this book is the expression of his anecdotes in the simplest way possible and in no way it sounded superficial like any other non-fictions. Honestly, I was fascinated at every chapter that the author has presented to us. I am glad that I could went through his journey of resilience, fulfillment, compassion and most importantly humanity. This is how success looks like- several sleepless nights with odd-hours studying and duty, time management, consistency and a will to stand even after many failures. A man who now dedicated his entire life towards a noble cause and gaining accolades is also the man who once decided to quit from his MBBS.
This is an autobiography about one of the world-renowned Diabetologists Dr. V.Mohan who has published several research papers, established hundreds of clinics and hospitals, and been cited in thousands of papers. Right from the early years he was encouraged to follow in his father’s footsteps and coming from a family of Doctors, this was not something new. But his path was not a bed of roses. He faced a lot of hurdles and struggles. Each chapter starts with a quote relevant to that chapter. The language is simple and easy to follow. The medical terms and disease conditions are broken down, making it easy for a layman to understand. The chapters are not written in chronological order. Rather it is a collection of various incidents and instances in his life and pertains to the theme of the chapter. He has shared his success mantra in these chapters and they are not something very difficult to follow. Finding the right way and perseverance is what led to his success. There are several photos, news clippings, letters, newspaper mentions, charts, pictorial representations, etc., that help us gain an even deeper insight into his life. Not only did I appreciate his honest telling of his life journey but also the beautiful poems that he has shared in this book! The main takeaways from this book apart from reading about his achievements are that hard work, a good vision for the future, never sitting back because of disappointments, hard work, determination, team spirit, and self-belief never fail to yield results, everything has a price-even success, how the power of the subconscious mind has an impact on things, importance of meditation and spirituality in life journey, etc. With the little medical background, I gained working as a clinical nutritionist; I was able to enjoy the book even a lot more. A wonderful book to read, not only to learn more about the person who has committed his life to the field of Diabetic research but also for anyone who is looking for inspiration to make excellence a habit!

An autobiography by Dr V. Mohan, one of the leading Diabetologist who worked hard and made remarkable contribution in research and analysis in the field of diabetes. This highly motivating and inspiring book is full of personal stories and resourceful knowledge gained throughout his journey right from his childhood to winning the Padma Shri award.
Dr V. Mohan is a pioneer in medical field, specifically for diabetes who actually started to dream with writeups and poetries but not medicine to be specific. As life goes by he devoted his life totally in terms of treating and solving many issues related to diabetes and other health aspects. This book talks about his whole journey right from developing this interest to making it possible to reach out and help every individual possible and contributing in making a world class healthcare system in India.
Like a true self help book each chapter here begins with an inspiring quote which has a resemblances with the content in that particular chapter. Full of simple yet highly rich words Dr Mohan has shared his life experiences, little secrets and useful tips being all about diabetes also not only that but how one with desired passion can achieve success with full dedication inspite with all those hardships and triumphs. The author does not fail to build the connection and convey everything in a very effective manner without getting those repetitive and off track vibes which we usually get from typical Biography/Autobiography.
Also would like to mention those interesting writeups and insightful images all over the book which makes this reading experience more delightful and interesting. Even the title and cover of the book seems appealing isn't it? It is very rare of me to enjoy certain kind of autobiography's but this is truly an insightful one and specially if you are from medical field then you must go through it once even rest of us should have a look at such motivating treasure of knowledge. Don't you miss out !!!
