It feels like forever since Katie Collier saw the deep green pastures and rolling hills of her home in the countryside of Western Pennsylvania. After five years of being a nurse in Pittsburgh she is thrilled to return to her family. But everything and everyone seems to have changed while she’s been gone. Some for better, some for worse. Some of those changes are making it hard for Katie to decide whether to stay in Pennsylvania or move on, leaving that part of her life in the past. When tragedy strikes, a debilitating accident leaves her injured and in constant pain. Relief is welcome but it comes at a heavy price, and leads to an addiction which threatens to ruin everything. Over the next year, Katie must not only fight her inner demons, she must find the strength to forge a new path. Should she accept an offer of a loveless marriage to secure a future? Or can she build a life for her sisters on her own? Once more, Katie will struggle with loss and triumphs with only her faith to guide her.
This story is disjointed and doesn't make sense. The author tries too hard to create sadness and chaos for the characters. The book end abruptly with no resolution to any plot. It also has many typos and strangely worded sentences. Glad its over.
Poor Katie she has gone through so many hardships in the first two books of the series. The Marlowe family has also seen more than their share of death and other problems. I have stayed up past my bedtime not wanting to finish a page or chapter until I knew what was going to happen to these endearing characters. It was so difficult for people in the early 1900s, I can't begin to imagine where they drew the strength to face each day, especially those who didn't believe in God. Unfortunately many people today face many of the same challenges (illness, poverty, drug/alcohol addiction, etc.) I say this is a lite read because it's an easy read. The characters are many and the material can get heavy at times. However it is a clean book and I didn't have to consult my dictionary to understand what was being said or taking place. I recommend people read the three books in the order they were written so they will understand relationships and events that take place. Enjoy - I'm on to book 3 in hopes Katie will finally find true love😉
Book two in this series is just as good as Book one was. This book continues a few years after book one leaves off. As in book one it deals with some heavy subjects, different era,but same problems that people have to deal with today. This book deals with a nurse who was prescribed pain medication and ended up being an addict. It also dealt with alcoholism. It covers older Parents and dealing with them passing away in their older ages. All of this while continuing the story and keeping the reader interested in the characters and what happens next. I was surprised with the ending as it seemed to just throw a lot of new story lines out then ends and leaves one hanging. Hopefully it will be covered in book three.
I thoroughly loved the second book in this series. I couldn't be Ieve all thread things that happened to the Colliers and their close friends and neighbors the Marlowes. It just never seemed to stop. Central of course is Katie and Will whose lies intertwined but never are sewn together in one piece. Really good people who help each other through tragedy and illness, good times and bad. Whenever a good thing happens a bad thing offsets it. Many people pass, but more survive all the rough times. I am looking forward to the next chapter in this series to find out how it all works out for these hard working families. Good hearted and God fearing they love through the early 20th Century and keep our young country moving forward into more modern days.
I choose this rating because I felt it was not well planned. How could just the few people have so many problems, there was no foundation to the story line, it went from one problem to another ie the son that ended in an asylum. While I like the characters and most of the story I feel it could have been better developed but that's just me. I read at least 3-4 books a week so I do have some instinct for a good book.
The book is typical of most books with less than 300 pages. It is lacking detail that makes a nice book really good. I usually read books that are 400 pages or more. The detail in those books makes them much more interesting. David Sillwagon needs to expand his books to give them some depth. I own the last book in this series so I will finish it, but I do not think that I will read any of his other series.
This series is driving me crazy! I normally can somehow predict things when reading a book but not with this series and I'm loving it. Oh boy on to book 3 however its after midnight do I dare start? I did book one in a day, book two in some hours, perhaps I should get some rest because I know I'm not going to want to stop.....its just that good.
Twist and turns is what I gathered from a first chapter! I found the ideas of farm life could control your life and keep you set!! That said with a memory that keeps me in line.
