This book is by far one of my favorites. I can say that I have had such an amazing day reading this book. I can't wait til the next one is ready. Prepare to tone out the world and be engulfed in this story.
A longish vignette reads like the first part of a YA series. No clean ending. Misleading book description.
I picked this up as a Halloween read after seeing all the 5 star reviews—many suspiciously short and without specifics. The “book description” is probably a summary for the entire series. This reads like a longish vignette, which is part of a story that needs further character development and more UF world-building. This is the first story I’ve read that’s set in Mobile, AL. There are two timelines, which are not clearly marked and have no attached dates. Hint: pay attention to character names.
In the current timeline, Aggie Kelly—protagonist and college-student-to-be—finds a job at an antique shop owned by Detra Ann and Henri Devecheaux. Aggie, Detra Ann, and three secondary female characters have psychic or paranormal abilities. The mystery of a missing, antique cup and saucer gives Aggie many opportunities to use her multiple, almost-supernatural talents to discover what Bette (the ghost) is trying to tell her.
I guessed that the undated “past” timeline is probably in the 1970s, about fifty years ago. Bette (the current-time ghost) is a high school senior and POV character, who becomes friends with another senior, Rosalie—who is said to be a witch and a gypsy.
This is a light, quick read with a ragged ending due to hanging threads, but I read it like a vignette with initial character studies. 2.5 stars, bumped up to 3 because I finished the vignette.
I like how this book introduced what I feel will be the main characters of the series: Aggie, Detra Ann, and Patrice. Of course it gave you hints of others in the book that I am sure will show show up throughout the series like Aggie's parents and Detra Ann's husband. This book actually ties back to M. L. Bullock's Seven Sister's series. It features Bette, whom has passed away and her sister that she did not know about until a few days before tragedy struck and her new found sister was murdered. She reaches out to Aggie through a tea set, that has come to the Antique shop to be sold. I can't wait to find out what book 2 has in store for us.
I'm so glad I gave this series a chance because I was truly captivated from the first page. I've read a few books by Bullock but I don't read many spooky ghost stories but more light hearted paranormal. I found this series has a nice balance. I like that the characters have depth and a mysterious backstory. I especially enjoyed Aggie which adds a bit of youthful lightness to the series. I like books that don't leave me feeling depressed and this book definitely left me with a smile. I'm looking forward to reading more from these authors.
picture this: ghost whisperer (the tv show) but make it a high schooler working at a vintage shop and discovering her psychic powers. spooky antiques, with twists, and mystery + horror done right. the writing is surprisingly solid. and i only say suprisingly because.. why isn’t this series and author talked about more? short, easy read. i flew through on audiobook.
bonus points because sets up the sequel perfectly & i will absolutely be continuing the series
I absolutely love this author and have read every book she’s written. I was so excited when this book arrived and read it in one sitting- yes, it’s really that good! Like all of her books, I just can’t put them down! I can’t wait to read more Devecheaux stories!
Read this in one day. I have read all the Seven Sister series books and loved them. Was excited to see a new series about Henri and Detra Ann. Love the idea of the antique items with a history/story to them just needed to be heard. Haven’t read a book by ML Bullock that didn’t grab my attention and kept me turning the pages.
Lot of bouncing back and forth. So the mom and the boyfriend killed the girl. What happened to them later? The girl said she knew her mom was going to kill the boyfriend so what of that? I felt like it was a cliff hanger To the next book but then the scene with the radio? I’m going to give book two try.

I love he Devecheauxs. So glad they are getting their on series. Good to meet Aggie too. She brings something special to their little group. Really looking forward to the next . Great job LADIES😁
These two authors have written a really good story. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It has great characters and a fascinating storyline. I highly recommend it.
This is a great new Series and I think he picked the right characters To start out this new 1Thank you for all of the work that you do I enjoy it tremendously Since at this point books are my life.
This is an awesome story, that it combines supernaturally talented people, and the spirits they help along the way . This story is for folks that like a bit of humor and live along the way.
I’m glad there is more to come, I finished this story in an hour. But only because I couldn’t put it down, it took a few chapters to get accustomed to the changes in narrators, but I’m glad I stuck with it. Very well done and eager to jump into the next book.
I have always been interested in the paranormal. Ghosts, witches, vampires, and werewolves are my go-to when deciding if I want to read a book. A Cup of Shadows kept me intrigued, and I would definitely recommend it to my friends and family for a good read.
This was a quick easy read for October. Its about spirits and communicating with people in the after life. One person is keeping secrets and it’s up to Aggie to find out.
I guess the storyline was okay(ish) but I couldn’t get over the terrible writing. It was very choppy, feeling like every sentence was subject-verb-period. There was absolutely no character development and where there was some “action” (used in the loosest sense) it was described very superficially so the reader doesn’t get into the scene. I’m going to maybe give the 2nd one a try in the hopes that maybe this improves.
