The Midas Plot: Plus Ultra

Rate this book
Young Matt List yearns for adventure. The son of a banker with a prominent but mysterious past, his unique abilities seem wasted as he herds cattle on desolate ranches in the Southwest while collecting debts for his father’s bank. It’s the dawn of an era when a new power, the United States, led by a dynamic president, begins to exert its military and economic influence on the world stage. It is also a time when gold reigns supreme, creating stable currency markets around the world under the steerage of the Bank of England’s gold standard. But international monetary stability comes at an exacting price, with falling commodity prices and wrenching economic fluctuations impacting millions of ordinary Americans.

Having survived war and now a graduate of West Point and England’s Cambridge University, Dr. Matt List must use his background as a military officer, aviation pioneer, and founding member of the Federal Reserve to combat a world-wide conspiracy by Midas and his Eternal Ones, to manipulate gold markets. Using dark powers, they manipulate history to fulfill their catastrophic prophecy. The choices Matt makes will determine if he will forever be with beautiful but mysterious Helena, or permanently end the journey of the Eternal Ones where it all began—on earth.

This is the first book in a series that provides exciting science fiction embedded in actual history. The hero, Matthias, learns much about his unusual origin as he leaves the New Mexico farm where he grew up to embark on a life of adventure, beginning with a stint with Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders. The history is very accurate and the story quit different. Unfortunately, it is written in a pedantic style that reads like a textbook and belabors the role of gold in the world's economy. I enjoy being entertained and educated, but the style of writing is oriented more toward the education on an arcane topic. I liked this book but didn't like the way it was written.

Yes, another good versus evil, humans, descendants of returned slaves, from an alien world, wanting to stay immortal but needs a constant elixer to stay that way.
However, the elixir contains an element of gold, which is extracted and can only be done once, which doesn't cause the gold stock to change. It only means that over a prolonged period of time, more gold stocks are required for the elixir.
Our young hero only finds out about this when he turns 18, but he has pre cursor experiences, which helps convince him of the validity of the claims.

Good

I warmed up to the the story after a while. It turned into good read. I imagine the story would have to much detail for many people. I actually enjoyed the detail. The book is well written and the characters are well presented. The main character is throughout the book and it seems that the majority of the time only good things happen to him. A little more bad or negative would have been nice.

This was a slow burn. Lots of history with an underlying mystery/fantasy adventure. Not sure I’m ready for this type of book. I was so close to DNF’ing but got through it but don’t think the series is for me.
