I saw this recommended on r/paleontology as the book for science interested artistic renditions of dinosaurs. It is that, but so much more. Unlike many dinosaur surveys, it chooses a specific site (the Bone Butte formation of Hell Creek, in present day South Dakota) at a specific time (the era directly prior to the asteroid) in order to present a survey of the vegetation, fish, reptiles, birds, mammals, and (yes!) dinosaurs that were present in that fossil record. This adds up to a much more accessible understanding of the environment. It's a tremendously engaging read. I am sorry to discover that the game it was prepared to accompany seems to be abandonware, but at least we have a nice digest of the science, along with a lot of really amazing paleoart.

The book read exactly like I'd expect from any other book with "Field Guide" in its title. But this one had dinosaurs (and much much more). Very well done with clear written descriptions, excellent diagrams and imagery. It really felt as if the authors were reporting back from an actual trip in time to the Hell Creek formation during the late Cretaceous.
