I had some of my webapps get upgraded from 2000 to 2008. I didn't need to rewrite much but I wanted to know what new features were available. I don't spend much time with SQL Server but I was able to get most of the info I needed to make a few optimizations to my old apps. If you aren't doing a lot of DBA type work this is a nice refresher for after a few years on ice.
Nice overview of every aspect of SQL Server 2008 -- no stone is left unturned. There was just enough SQL to serve as a brush-up. The book explained the new inner and outer join syntax. Not new for most people; I realized I had not written serious SQL code in 10 years. Of course, this is 2014 and the book only covers 2008... There is a 2012 "Step by Step" book but the author is Patrick LeBlanc.
