I am a huge fan of relaxation techniques, and I use a few myself on a regular basis. So, when this book showed up at one of my favorite book review sites all about relaxation techniques, I had to check it out. I found this book to be somewhat awkwardly written in places. My biggest problem with the book is that the author didn't actually start discussing the actual relaxation techniques until after the 40% mark. Previous to that, he talked a lot about stress and other tangential issues like productivity. People may or may not use relaxation techniques for stress only, so to have so much to book taken up by stress discussion seemed to be a bit of a waste. I also thought the chapter preceding the start of the actual techniques was a little silly. Do you really need such a level of self-examination to figure out if you're stressed? I think you know if you are! The techniques given are nothing new, but it is nice to see them in one place. They include controlled breath, progressive relaxation, body scan, meditation, and visualization. I found parts of the book a bit blaming-shaming of us the readers for our inability to live life the way the author thinks we should. For instance, in a tangential section about productivity, he certainly comes across as saying that we are to blame for a variety of reasons. That might be true—or it might not—but whether it is or isn’t is irrelevant and nonproductive if what we want to do is promote change. All in all, personally, I prefer non-fiction books to be tightly focused and non blaming. This one could have been so easily made into something so much better by trimming everything that wasn’t about relaxation techniques.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
This book includes a short section on the basics of stress. This is followed by a great deal of information about specific methods that one can practice to reduce their stress levels. Some of the methods I have not heard of before, which is interesting. The methods have enough explanation to help one use the method in their own life.
