Welcome to the Building a Discipling Culture Study Guide! We designed this guide to help you grasp, explore, and go deeper with the major concepts presented in Building a Discipleship Culture. The book was first published in 2005 and has gone on to become a global bestseller. Before diving in, we feel it’s important to understand where and why this book was originally conceived. It came out of frustration and desperation that accompanied trying to disciple people who had little or no education, people who would traditionally never open a book and read it. The following LifeShapes were designed to help those who had the least access to training yet wanted to grow in their understanding of Jesus and the Bible. The simplicity of the shapes allowed for easy understanding. The LifeShapes prevented the overwhelm and intimidation that can accompany text-centric methods. They could be shared on a napkin over coffee or a brown bag over lunch. In this guide, we have attempted to make it again accessible and straightforward. It can be used by anyone, anywhere, and at any stage in their journey of faith. We pray that you will find many uses for this guide so that every disciple can be equipped in building a discipling culture in their homes, workplaces, school, and coffee shops. This guide does not go through Building a Discipling Culture exhaustively, but serves as a introduction through the key
Shared one method of discipleship (using huddles) which I can see being effective! Also shared a few tools for spiritual growth in that process which I could see myself using. It kind of made it seem like that was the only effective way to disciple people, but I saw the heart behind it.
This book was kind of a drag at some points. Not because there was bad material, but the pacing in the beginning 50 or so pages is pretty slow. There were some good sections such as the section on spiritual rest, the pentagon of calling, and hexagon of prayer. The appendix has some good pointers for leading a huddle group as well. I see myself returning to the sections I got a lot out of, but not the entire book.
3.5 stars. I really enjoyed the overall content of this book. It sparked good conversation in our staff meetings and gave me new insight on how to disciple well. I think the shapes ended up confusing me more than helping me--they'd probably help more if I used them regularly.
Enjoyed this book on discipleship and the language that Breen puts forward to help people follow along. I’ve never heard of the LifeShapes before so this was my first introduction.
There is a lot to think about but each facet of the discipleship journey is teased out well and thoroughly.
