Rate this book
Finding the Plot is the tale of a young boy trying to find his true direction in life. This is imaginatively traditional story-telling, gently paced and filled with poignant detail. The author’s tone makes the settings and characters believable and compelling. Kiren, a young teenager with mixed ethnic parentage is the main character. A family crisis in India results in him living alone with his father in their new home in Brighton, facing the challenge of a fresh school and choosing subjects to suit his ambitions. Unfortunately, these are not in accord with the wishes of his absent mother. The discovery of some nearby allotments and the agreement of his father to his rental of an available plot adds to the family discord.Kiren and his father visit India, which holds surprises…and disappointment. Back in Brighton Kiren, a solitary boy in any case, makes new friends among the allotment folks who become a comfortable, unusual community for him and his father. In time, Kiren’s mother’s family does reach out to him and life goes on, complete with allotment thieves, Christmas parties and adjustments to life in a single parent family. In the Readers & Writers group of a major New York Publisher, Finding The Plot was highly acclaimed. “It’s one of those children’s books that adults can read with enjoyment…because of the wonderful drawing of the characters.” – “The house in Brighton reverberates with the sounds and shadows and smells of all such old, damp houses and I love the premise…gardener or doctor?” – “With its fluid writing and evocative scenes this book is likely to go straight to heart of its readers…”

A refreshingly traditional story about young teenage angst and the complications that some families have to face. Finding a sense of purpose and a consolation for life's stresses in gardening and nature is something many readers will likely identify with.

The author’s voice has a warmth that makes the settings and characters believable and compelling. The main character is a young teenager with mixed ethnic parentage. A family crisis in India results in him living alone with his father in their new home in Brighton, facing the challenge of a fresh school and choosing subjects to suit his ambitions. Unfortunately, these are not in accord with the more ambitious wishes of his absent mother. The discovery of some nearby allotments and the agreement of his father to his rental of an available plot adds to the family discord.
