This review is more for the entire 5 volume manga.
10/10 This is an incredibly unique manga. It acts as a finale for a series that started in the 70s, but does so in a unique way that kind of incorporates everything in the franchise to make it canon. Getter Robo gets a bit murky with continuity. The mangas that were worked on by Ken Ishikawa and Go Nagai were one continuous story that would come out sporadically until Ishikawa’s passing. Each anime OVA is a separate continuity that picks and chooses which characters and plot points to adapt while adding its own twists and turns. It both plays on the established lore and mythology while adding its own legends.
The art is incredible in each volume. Every mechs and monster alike are so detailed and intricate without looking off putting. Something I love is the introduction of the multiverse, so that any and every Getter Robo entry can be considered canon, yet its own self contained story within its own separate reality/universe. Great action. Good character moments.
A fantastic ending to this series. It definitely went some unexpected places (Michiru, why?) but there was also a lot of the usual giant robot bullshit that I've come to love over the years. Nothing says giant robots like a crazed convict yelling STONNNNNER SUNSHIIIIINE. Ryoma, you nut.
Whatever the hell a Stoner Sunshine is. LOL. I love you, Japan.
