Take the high road, take the low; wind round or go straight--but whatever you do, don't let Chicken escape! It's a mad dash past houses big and small, trees short and tall, water shallow and deep, but as children accompany this happy hen on her drive, they'll master opposites like wide/narrow, dark/light, and near/far. It's a cheery, colorful way to learn! A Selection of the Children's Book Club.
In the 10 pages of following the chicken through the book, I find the book entertaining. A special note should be made because before presenting this book to a Prekindergarten or Kindergarten child, it should be done as a read aloud. The first page introduces the concept of BIG house and SMALL house and although the illustrator makes an attempt to distinguish the two, it could be confused with near and far. However, in the pages for WIDE and Narrow, the illustrator does a good job at portraying the differences. The opposites in the book are listed below: BIG, SMALL TALL, SHORT WIDE, NARROW SHALLOW, DEEP LOW, HIGH WINDING, STRAIGHT, DARK, LIGHT NEAR, FAR
