Tatu Vanhanen has come to be recognized as a singiifcant scholar in the study of democratization. This is one of the earlier works in his book-length projects. He explores, here, 147 states in the time spane of 1980-1988, using his own conceptualization of democracy, treying to explain why some states are more democratic than others. A useful introduction to his thinking.
