Englishman James Sanford’s estranged father dies and leaves him everything—including instructions for his ashes to be scattered in one of the most remote parts of Australia. James can’t figure out why, after all, he hasn’t spoken to his dad in years. And why Australia? Why not somewhere more civilised where the wildlife won’t try to kill him?
Matthew Kennedy is an Alice Springs native on the last leg of his contract as a tour guide at Uluru when he spots James wandering the resort clutching a backpack. He’s intrigued by the protectiveness James has over his bag. When the pair strike up a conversation, Matt thinks James could be a worthwhile distraction for a day or two until James leaves Uluru to head home.
Except James can’t figure out why his father chose Australia to scatter his ashes. Why not at sea like most Naval officers? Wanting to know the father who saw James as nothing but a disappointment, James, with Matt’s help, try to figure out why James is drawn to the rock. What had his father felt when he was there?
What starts off as an outback hookup soon turns to friends with benefits, and the longer James stays in Australia with Matt, the more he puts his heart on the line.
I've read this author before. This is a MM contemporary story set in Uluru and Alice Springs, Northern Territory, Australia. James from England meets Matt from Alice. This book stirred some great memories of my time in the red centre. I can't wait for the next book.
This is a really good, entertaining read. The basic story is pretty obvious from the beginning, there are really no surprises. The joy is in the details. The characters are well developed and believable. The over the top, too good to be true family is endearing. I had to google it but I now know what a quokka is. There is no real crisis or conflict. The heart breaking bits are extremely well done, they made me tear up. The happy ending is really happy. Not a classic but it’s a good bit of escapism.
James and Matt were perfect for one another. The circumstances that brought James "down under" may have begun with an unusual and mysterious request but the mystifying allure of that famous red rock wove it's magic and brought two lonely men together. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the journey to their HEA.
