Half-fae/half-gnome Elsee has avoided the games and power plays of the Appalachian Faerie Court so far. She prefers hanging out with her grandfather in the stony caverns around Lookout Mountain, Georgia, and making music with the local humans.
But when her aunt, Queen Aoife, comes to claim Elsee's most prized possession, lines are crossed.
This was a light fun read and I really enjoyed the characters and the story - tough the competition part had me cringing from memories of my less than graceful self in middle school. My favorite part was definitely the characters - I especially love how Elsee just turned an object of power into something she loved simply because she loved it. I like characters who cherish objects for the memories they elicit over how powerful they might be. The descriptions are also a strong point in my opinion. The way the music is described is very vivid and I liked reading those parts quite a lot. I look forward the reading the other books and maybe getting to know more about the world Elsee and her friends live in.
