Russ Towne has found another genre to excel in. I've read a few of his books in the past, including one other Western, but this new book--part of a future series about US Marshal Patch Elkins--is a winner. At ~150 pages, it chronicles the US Marshall's life as he navigates the 'territory' to bring in criminals. Unfortunately, there's a price on more than just the criminals' heads this time...
My favorite aspect of this book is how much the story tells 'above and beyond' the words, for instance... life was insane back in the 'old days' of Western adventures. No cars, minimal maps, changing territorial boundaries, it took days to spread the word about outlaw problems via newspapers, it might take a month before someone found a dead body, etc. By reading this book, I actually realized what life was like for a US Marshal during those days. People died in tragedies all the time, just like they do now, but we didn't hear about it the second it occurred in the days of long ago.
When an author can push you to think beyond 'what you know,' you've found someone fantastic. Towne's style is easy-to-read, informative, and reflective. While being an outlaw and traveling by horseback across a territory can be intense, the book is not a totally dark and instructional take on this type of life. It's not light and fluffy either. There's a balanced equilibrium where we see love, blood, fighting, anger, death, and hope. Towne shows us how two strangers can bond, how a young teen needs a role model, how what's fair doesn't always occur, and how a man with an injury can still protect himself and the country.
I'm excited to see how this series develops. Kudos on an excellent book for a non-typical reader.

A 1950's Western
Plenty of action and an exciting read. A little light on description but it kept moving. Worth my time to read.

This is the first, but guarantee you it will not be the last book I will read authored by Mr. Russ Towne. The story is very sound and definitely an exceptionally descriptive episodes of our real old American western folklore adventures. Patch an his new associate, Gus does an outstanding portrayal of western justice. Try it I am sure you will like it.
Certainly worthy of five stars, as the storylines are successfully descriptive episodes, of what I believe to be overwhelmingly factual encounters throughout our old western adventures. Too, the author's perception of characters amazingly defined each and every exciting assignment with unbelievably perfection.
Mr. Towne certainly has another, follower as reading this outstanding, and heartwarming, rendition of exciting justice filled masterpiece of old western adventures. The camaraderie of Patch, Gus, and Nick very strongly represented the bonds of old western folklore adventures to my beliefs, anyway.
Definitely recommend this exciting episode of Patch, and his associates, who instills confidence and justice throughout their adventure of old western culture. Story has no down time and the adventures only become more impressive with each new episode of outstanding accomplishments. Regardless of you reading preference I believe you will enjoy this very compassionate experience as it fully develops with each new adventure. Sorry for those of you who do not try Patch as crew, as the loss is definitely yours!

My first time with this author. U.S. Marshal Arliss “Patch” Elkins is on the trail of a young man named Gus, accused of murdering his parents and setting the house afire. Patch always gets his man, so it’s a short time till Patch has Gus in custody. On the way back to town, Patch and Gus have people shooting at them. Questioning one of the outlaws, it is discovered that Gus’ father has a huge bounty out on both of them. Learning the real story from Gus, Patch finds that it was his uncle responsible for the deaths and the burned down home. It becomes a dangerous cat and mouse game for Patch and Gus to reach town and safety. It’s debatable whether they will survive with half the outlaws in the territory out for their blood. Will they make it? A pretty good short western, and the narrator had a wonderful cowboy-sounding monologue. I wish it were longer. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Nice summer read. Short, moves quickly, plenty of action. Could use a little character depth and description but as a quick fiction read, it's fun and fast.
But OMG, the typos. About 30 that I flagged (and submitted via Amazon's reporting feature). At the start, there's an acknowledgment of the editor, but what Russ really needs is a copy editor. Self-published fiction often has typos, so it's expected to an extent.

This is an excellent story, better than most.
When is your sister your cousin? When is your capture your savior? When is your friend your rival? When is your prisoner your deputy? When is it ok to shoot a women? What makes a friend? Highly recommended for all readers. Full of action.
