Jean Adamson was a British writer and illustrator of children's books. She was best known for the Topsy and Tim books, the first of which was published in 1960 and which have sold 27 million copies. Adamson's creations were also featured widely on television in 84 episodes of Topsy and Tim.
This is a lovely, simple story that shows twins, Topsy and Tim going to the library to choose some books. I love this look into a 1970s library. The good old days when books had a nice little ticket in a pocket in their cover that would go into your section of a lovely wooden tray. Topsy and Tim think the books look a bit messy so they start to sort them out into size order, soon the books are in a muddle but the patient librarian can see they're just trying to help and explains to them why books are sorted in this way. When Topsy and Tim get home they are inspired to reorganise Mummy and daddies books and play at libraries themselves, when daddy can't find his road atlas librarians Topsy and Tim know just where to find it.
